Newcastle plan £15m move for relegation-threatened defender after January interest – Report

According to new reports, Newcastle are lining up a cut-price move for Southampton centre-back Mohammed Salisu.

Dan King – a senior writer at The Sun – reveals that we first showed interest in the defender during the first transfer window following the takeover (January 2022) and have been watching him closely ever since.

The 23-year-old has impressed in a poor Saints team and is thought to tick several boxes, being a young player with high potential and Premier League experience.

With the Ghanaian approaching the final year of his contract at St Mary’s, Newcastle believe they could strike a deal around the £15m mark, with Salisu expected to leave should they suffer relegation to the second tier.

Jamaal Lascelles has been tipped to leave this summer and our options at centre-back are already thin on the ground following summer moves for Federico Fernandez and Ciaran Clark. We also lack pace at the back and will need added strength in depth should we be playing European football next season.

Considering his age, potential, our prior interest and his contract situation, this does feel like a link that could have legs – even if it does come from The Sun!

  1. Would be an excellent buy at that price.

I’d also take Walker Peters. Very competent & versatile full back – plays as well at LB as does RB. Only 25 and good long term replacement for Trippier.
