Newcastle United have been showing interest in Liverpool defender Joe Gomez, according to British football agent Hayden Dodge.
Dodge – who owns Next Generation Management agency – claims that Newcastle are long-term admirers of the England international and will be in the market for another centre-back this summer.
Speaking to Caught Offside, he said: “It is quite well known that Newcastle have long admired defender Joe Gomez as they look to bolster their centre-half options ahead of several players being out of contract this summer”
Eddie Howe is thought to be a big fan of the defender, making attempts to bring him to Bournemouth (on loan) during his early years at Anfield.
Gomez hasn’t had the best season and was particularly poor when Liverpool came to St James’ Park, where the visitors made hard work of it despite the man advantage. However, it’s no real surprise to hear we’ve shown interest given Howe’s preference for British players with Premier League experience.
He does have a decent turn of pace – something we lack at centre-back – and is a good age at 25, so he could tick a couple of boxes should he become available this summer. One to watch?
