“From what I’m hearing” – Keith Downie reveals truth behind Anthony Gordon’s lack of starts

According to Sky Sports’ Keith Downie, Anthony Gordon needed “a lot of work” on his fitness following a January move from Everton – a key factor behind his lack of starts so far.

The winger made just his third start for the Magpies at the weekend against Southampton and looked lively after hitting the post before he was substituted at half-time.

He made a promising start on Sunday but did fade. It’s clear that he’s just not quite up to speed for the intense and high-pressing style of play that Eddie Howe likes to utilise – but there’s plenty of time for the 22-year-old to learn and develop.

With a whole pre-season under his belt, we will hopefully start to see the true potential of Gordon, who could enjoy a similar transformation to that of Joelinton, Jacob Murphy or Miguel Almiron under Howe.

Interestingly, The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards also reports that Gordon is a popular member of the dressing room already, has impressed in training and is showing a real willingness to learn. So, while his lack of starts so far may be down to initial fitness levels, it may not be long until he’s shining in a black an white shirt.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Downie had this to say on the former Everton winger:

“From what I’m hearing, he’s needed quite a lot of work in terms of getting his fitness up to the standard that Howe wants.

“He’s worked a lot on that. I think, from what I’ve seen when he’s come on, I’ve been impressed.

“I know he came in to a good situation on Sunday, but just his closing down and his work rate, even at 6-1 up, was really impressive to see.”

  5. Simple reason for lack of starts is atm he doesn’t make our best 11, that may change over time but is the reason for now.
