Aston Villa set to rival Newcastle for £30m target but Toon remain favourites – The Telegraph

It looks like Newcastle United will face plenty of competition for Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney.

As revealed by The Telegraph, Aston Villa are planning to rival our summer pursuit of the Scottish international – although it seems we remain favourites.

The same piece states that Newcastle are regarded the ‘most likely destination’ for the 25-year-old, but this isn’t the first club who’ve been linked with a rival bid in recent weeks, with Man City also tipped to make a move.

Tierney has fallen behind Oleksandr Zinchenko in the pecking order at the Emirates and is expected to leave in search of regular first-team football, having started just one Premier League game for the Gunners since the turn of the year.

He could be a timely upgrade on Dan Burn as we prepare for European football next season. His injury record hasn’t been great in recent years, but he’s stayed fit this season and could offer experience, quality at both ends of the pitch and leadership to the Toon dressing room.

The Telegraph highlight Villa’s ambitious transfer plans in the piece, with a double swoop for Dusan Vlahovic and Ferran Torres currently under consideration. However, I’d back us to beat Villa to Tierney; who would be tempted by Champions League football, a move closer to his homeland and a manager in Eddie Howe who tried to sign him for Bournemouth just a few years ago.
