Toon handed Sunday night boost as top-four rivals lose despite VAR error – Updated PL table

Newcastle’s top-four hopes were handed a welcome boost on Sunday night, as Manchester United fell to a 1-0 defeat at West Ham.

A 2-0 defeat at home to Arsenal – just our fifth of the season – meant for a frustrating afternoon on Tyneside, but the Red Devils couldn’t capitalise on our slip up at the London Stadium.

VAR did their best to help them, as a blatant handball from Victor Lindelof was somehow ignored by the off-field officials. It’s another alarming error that threatened to bail out a ‘big six’ side, yet it didn’t matter in the end as the Hammers held on following David De Gea’s awful first half error.

As a result, we now remain third in the table and two clear of Man Utd; who could be caught by Liverpool should they continue to slip up. It was their second defeat of the week and a result that will have also been celebrated on Merseyside.
