Paul Merson has named Sven Botman and Kieran Trippier in his Premier League Team of the Season.
The Sky Sports pundit believes Botman has been “absolutely outstanding” in his debut season in England, feeling he’s been a big part of our superb defensive record and someone who makes those around him perform better.
Merson has also hailed Trippier; who he feels has taken his game “to another level” this season. He’s praised his leadership qualities – both on and off the pitch – and feels he’s become an even better defender following his time in Spain with Atletico Madrid.
The Toon duo feature in his 2022/23 XI alongside the likes of Erling Haaland, William Saliba, Casemiro and Marcus Rashford, with his side full of Arsenal, Man Utd and Man City stars.
Speaking to GIVEMESPORT what he’s had to say on the Newcastle United duo, followed by his Team of the Season in full:
Sven Botman – “He’s been absolutely outstanding. For him to come in to a new country and a new league and do what he’s done, has been brilliant. He has made the players around him better. He defends so well. Newcastle don’t give you a sniff any more and he marshals that back four in my opinion.”
Kieran Trippier – “He has taken it to another level this season. He’s always had a great right foot but the time he spent at Atletico Madrid made him an even better defender. And his leadership qualities on and off the pitch have been so important for Newcastle. He’s an unbelievable professional.”
