Gordon reveals truth behind Toon struggles in brilliant interview – One to watch this summer

After scoring his first goal for Newcastle United in yesterday’s 1-1 draw at Chelsea, Anthony Gordon spoke to NUFC TV about his first six months at the club.

He showed real maturity in the interview (watch it below) and made a telling admission about his struggle to show his best form since completing a £40m move from Everton, revealing that his fitness levels were way below his new teammates when he arrived.

The 22-year-old admits he’s been “absolutely blowing” in games and has been constantly playing catch up physically, with a foot injury in March also hampering his progress during a “really difficult year.”

However, it seems this wake-up call has motivated the winger to get himself up to speed over the summer, with him raring go ahead of the U21 Euros – where he’ll represent England later this month – and a pre-season programme that’s expected to be key for the scouse talent. There’s certainly more to come from the former Everton star, as he speaks like a man determined to improve after scoring his first goal on Sunday.

Here’s what he had to say after the game, helping explain why he’s only made four starts since signing in January:

This makes a lot of sense and was great to hear from Gordon. Refreshingly honest and determined to get back to his best levels after realising how fit and relentless you have to be in Howe’s high-intensity side.

A huge summer awaits for the winger, who seems desperate to get fully fit, build on that goal and shine for England U21s at this summer’s Euros.

  1. He’s right. There were times he was moving round that pitch like Shelvey.

But he done some good stuff yesterday & is a very good footballer. Love his honesty & if he puts the graft in then I think he’s got a big future not just with NUFC but with England too.
