Top four rivals reject Newcastle offer as Eddie Howe eyes controversial loan deal – Report

Manchester United are unwilling to let Harry Maguire join Newcastle on loan, as they have no interest in helping out a top four rival unless we can offer a permanent deal.

This comes from The Sun’s Alan Nixon, who reports that the Red Devils have no interest in helping out Newcastle unless we offer a package that benefits them financially.

The £80m defender is not essential to Erik ten Hag’s plans and he will be looking to move him on this summer, but Newcastle appears to be an unlikely destination despite our interest.

Aston Villa are also looking at the centre-back and could secure a loan deal as they are not considered to be a ‘rival’ and a direct threat to a Champions League spot. In other words, the ‘Newcastle tax’ still exists when it comes to certain ‘big six’ rivals.

Maguire’s career at Old Trafford hasn’t gone to plan, but as he has proven at Leicester and in an England shirt, there is still a good player there for the right team. He will be desperate to prove his doubters wrong, as there’s no doubting he’s looked shaky in a Man Utd shirt for a few seasons now.

With the Magpies now eyeing up a right-sided centre-back to compete with Fabian Schar, it seems unlikely that we would be willing to spend big on the 30-year-old. Another Jesse Lingard scenario, perhaps? Personally, I’d rather we looked elsewhere.
