Newcastle close in on £30m deal alongside £38m move for Harvey Barnes – The Guardian

According to The Guardian, Newcastle are closing in on the signing of Southampton full-back Tino Livramento.

This comes from senior reports Jacob Steinberg, who claims that the Saints are ‘close to selling’ the 20-year-old to Newcastle for a fee in the region of £30m.

He states that the right-back is ‘expected’ to follow Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes to St James’ Park, with Eddie Howe eager to build a strong squad ahead of our return to the Champions League.

Southampton have been pushing to receive a bigger fee due to the sizeable sell-on clause inserted in his transfer from Chelsea. Earlier this month, The Telegraph reported that we’d had a £21m bid rejected, but added that a move for the England U21 talent could be boosted by the sale of Allan Saint-Maximin.

We released an NUFC Blog exclusive on our interest in Livramento at the start of June, confirming that talks had taken place over a move for the highly-rated full-back. Almost six weeks later, it looks like a deal is progressing.

Harvey Barnes is on Tyneside and set to sign for £38m tomorrow and, if The Guardian’s latest claims are to be believed, it sounds like Livramento could soon join him.

  1. Overpaying slightly for both. How is Barnes £38 when Maddison was only £40? Barnes will be an upgrade on left but it hurts me to see two better wingers (Szoboszlai and Diaby) go to rivals.

Livramento coming off injury might have been a bargain at £15-20 but £30 seems a stretch. Especially when we a few other priorities.

These deals feel a little bit desperate. Hopefully both are dynamite and the fees look like steals in the long run!
