Newcastle announce new St James’ Park planning – Official statement & Darren Eales quotes

Newcastle have announced that plans are in place for a brand new fan zone at Strawberry Place right outside the stadium in partnership with STACK.

This land was recently repurchased by the club after Mike Ashley sold it to developers in order to make a quick profit, and it seems now we’re finally putting it to good use.

The fan zone, which is expected to be two floors, will offer food, drinks and entertainment with six bars and 10 street food units as well as a main stage all to be included.

While it is still subject to planning and licensing being granted, the hope is that we will be able to open it by the end of the year, with an initial lifespan of three years.

CEO Darren Eales wants the fan zone to not only be an exciting experience for match-goers, but also for people visiting the stadium ‘seven days a week’ to really ‘add social and economic value to the location’.

Here’s what Eales had to say on the plans:

“Our fan zone is aimed at enhancing the experience not just for supporters visiting matches and big events at the stadium but for people visiting the city centre seven days a week.

“Submitting initial plans is just the first stage and there are a lot of steps in the process, but we are excited to continue working with our commercial and city partners to create something that will really add social and economic value to the location.”
