Newcastle ‘miss out’ on €45m man as Premier League rivals agree deal on Sunday night

Over the past few weeks, one name that’s been repeatedly linked to Newcastle United is French centre-back Axel Disasi.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed interest from Newcastle and Man Utd earlier this month and FootballTransfers even claimed we’d reached a ‘verbal agreement’ with the player ahead of talks with Monaco.

However, on Sunday evening, The Athletic’s David Ornstein has revealed that Chelsea have now reached an agreement to sign the 25-year-old defender; a move that’s come out of nowhere for Blues fans.

It’s believed the France international has accepted the move to Stamford Bridge and will sign for a fee in the region of €45m (£38.5m), being Wesley Fofana’s replacement after the former Leicester City star suffered a serious knee injury during pre-season.

Were we ever in for Disasi? Did we miss out? Who knows. He ticked boxes as an athletic, right-sided centre-back and Romano reported on our interest, but Sky Sports did suggest a few weeks ago that this was an agent-driven link and not a deal the club were actively pursuing. On to the next one!

  1. Whether we were interested in him or not, Chelsea showing how to get a deal done, we seem to be bumbling along with ours, I have to say I’m a bit disappointed in the robustness of our dealings
