Ryan Fraser speaks out as Newcastle announce Friday night move to Southampton

Newcastle United have announced that Ryan Fraser has sealed a season-long loan move to Southampton.

After spending the past six months training with our Under-21s, the winger has secured a return to the South Coast, joining the Saints’ promotion push.

The Scottish international has spoken out on the move, saying: “I love football, I love playing football, obviously things have happened up there that no one knows about, so everyone can jump to conclusions and have their own thoughts on what’s happened.

“It feels really good. The minute Russ (Martin) phoned me, it was something I really wanted to happen. I just can’t wait to get started now and help the team out in any way I can.

“The club doesn’t deserve to be down here. We need to get back up as soon as possible this season, and all the lads will be doing everything we can to get us there. I’m just so happy to be here.

The club have released this statement on NUFC.co.uk following his departure:

Newcastle United winger Ryan Fraser has joined Southampton on a season-long loan deal.

The 29-year-old has linked up with Russell Martin’s men on a temporary basis and will spend the entire 2023/24 campaign with the Championship side.

Scotland international Fraser joined the Magpies after leaving Bournemouth in September 2020 and has made 59 appearances in all competitions for the club, scoring three goals.

Last term, he made eight appearances for Newcastle, but hasn’t featured for United since October 2022.

The Saints currently sit fifth in the second tier and are unbeaten in their three league outings so far. Fraser could make his debut for Martin’s side when they host Queens Park Rangers at St. Mary’s on Saturday afternoon.
