How Newcastle United’s Young Loanees are Faring This Season

Newcastle United have eight players out on loan this season, several of whom are unlikely to feature for the first team in the future.

However, three younger talents have embarked on loan moves this term aiming to demonstrate they have what it takes to succeed in the Premier League.

Yankubu Minteh and Garang Kuol are currently in the Eredivisie, while Harrison Ashby is spending a full season in the Championship.

Read on as we take a closer look at how the trio have been faring with their temporary clubs at the start of the 2023/24 campaign.

Yankuba Minteh – Feyenoord

Minteh enjoyed a lively start to his loan spell with Feyenoord, netting two goals and one assist in his first five appearances for the club.

The 19-year-old was in the starting XI for their visit to Ajax on Sunday, and caught the eye as they raced into a 3-0 lead at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

The one-sided scoreline was not expected, with leading online bookmakers unable to separate the two sides in the run-up to match.

However, fans who used betting sites bonus offers to wager on Feyenoord were left disappointed as Ajax supporters forced the game to be abandoned in the 56th minute.

Objects including flares and fireworks were thrown onto the pitch, forcing the referee to call a halt to proceedings with the visitors in the ascendancy.

Despite the ugly scenes, Minteh showed enough during his time on the pitch to suggest he could hit the bookies hard this season in the scoring and assists markets.

Garang Kuol – Volendam

While Minteh has been demonstrating his future potential with Feyenoord, Kuol has had a much tougher time in the Netherlands with Volendam.

The young Australian winger featured in three of his club’s first four league games this season, each of which ended in defeat.

He scored a consolation goal in a 3-1 reverse at Fortuna Sittard, but was hauled off in the 79th minute after failing to produce much else during the game.

The former Central Coast Mariners player started against Heracles over the weekend, but failed to trouble the scorers in a 2-2 draw.

The 19-year-old was booked in the 31st minute and his misery was compounded as he was substituted again with 18 minutes remaining.

Kuol struggled to impress during his previous loan spell with Hearts in the Scottish Premiership and appears to be finding it difficult to adapt to football in Europe.

Harrison Ashby – Swansea City

Ashby started each of Swansea’s first five league games this season, but was unable to help them record a victory during that run.

He bagged an assist in a 1-1 draw at home to Coventry City, before netting Swansea’s only goal in a 2-1 defeat at Preston North End.

The 21-year-old was dropped to the bench for the trip to Cardiff City, but was not brought on as the team slipped to a 2-0 defeat.

Ashby was unused again in a 1-1 draw at Queens Park Rangers and spent another 90 minutes watching from the sidelines in a 3-0 home victory over Sheffield Wednesday.

With Swansea switching to a back four against the Owls, Ashby may find game time difficult to come by over the next few weeks.

Josh Key has looked impressive at right-back over the past couple of games and is more suited to playing that role in the a four-man defensive system.
