Midfielder drops exit hint following Newcastle links – One to watch after Sandro Tonali news?

Kalvin Phillips has hinted at a January move away from Man City if he’s not given more minutes between now and the new year.

Speaking to the media after starting in England’s 3-1 win over Italy last night, he said:

“As a football player, you always want to be playing….and so that’s the case with me. I want minutes and obviously I haven’t done that over the last year and a half, so that’s one thing I want to do.

“I know that I need to be playing games and competing every weekend. I’m going to have to make a decision on my City future over the next months. Hopefully my chance comes but if it doesn’t then I will have to make other decisions

I want minutes and I want to go to the Euros. Let’s see what happens”.

Over the past week, both Mark Douglas at iNews and the Northern Echo have reported on our ongoing interest in Phillips, claiming we are one of several Premier League clubs readying a January move should he leave Man City.

With the Euros on the horizon and places in the midfield up for grabs, it makes so much sense for the former Leeds star to find a new home, with Pep Guardiola handing him just two Premier League starts since his £42m move last summer.

The 27-year-old didn’t want to give too much away on a possible transfer, but seems intent on getting game time between now and the end of the season, making a potential loan-to-buy move one that could appeal for all parties? As Phillips said himself, let’s see what happens.

With Eddie Howe reportedly keen on a holding midfielder and Sandro Tonali facing a ban, it feels like one to watch in January.
