Yankuba Minteh – Howe reveals return to Tyneside & possible recall amid injury crisis

Eddie Howe has revealed that Newcastle will consider recalling Yankubah Minteh from his loan spell at Feyenoord after a ‘productive’ stint in the Netherlands.

The 19-year-old has bagged three goals and an assist in nine Eredivisie appearances this season, also playing twice in the UEFA Champions League, but he’s missed their last four after suffering a hamstring injury.

The Mail report that we do have an option to recall the winger in light of our injury crisis and Howe admits it’s something we’d seriously consider if we believe any loanee could ‘strengthen us’ and continue their development over the second half of the season.

Howe revealed that Minteh has been back on Tyneside for an assessment on his injury, to ‘see how he is’, with the club set to make a decision once the severity of his injury becomes clearer.

Despite scoring goals and playing a key role in an impressive Feyenoord side, Howe insists that the Premier League is a ‘very different league’. However, he’s backed the teenager to succeed given his ‘athletic profile’ and impressive form so far.

Howe on Yankuba Minteh and the possibility of Newcastle recalling him from Feyenoord:

“We’ll look at our players that are out on loan, with a view to whether they could potentially strengthen us. If it’s good for their career as well, then we’ll certainly look at what we can do.

“He’s (Minteh) done very well, although unfortunately he’s injured at the moment. He’s come back for an assessment on that injury because we need to check and see how he is.

“We need to work out how serious the injury is and when he’ll be back, and then we’ll make a decision on him, like we would with all our loan players.

“I think his loan spell has been a productive one. He’s scored goals and been part of a successful team. He’s certainly got talent, although the Premier League is a very different league to any other league in Europe.

“That doesn’t mean that players can’t come in or out of the Premier League. He’s someone we like, and he’s certainly got the athletic profile that we need.”
