‘His name has been discussed’ – Newcastle considering controversial January move?

Speaking on the BBC’s Transfer Gossip Daily podcast, The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards has dropped a bit of bombshell on Jordan Henderson.

He claims there’s been “conversations at Newcastle” about a January move for the former Liverpool captain, adding that he’s desperate to leave Al Ettifaq just six months after joining the Saudi side.

Edwards believes it would be a “controversial” move for Eddie Howe to bring in a “very prominent former Sunderland player”, but he appears to be an option we’re considering as we look for short-term cover for the suspended Sandro Tonali.

Kalvin Phillips is thought to be Howe’s top target and Edwards remains confident the Man City midfielder will end up on Tyneside. However, Henderson is eager to be back in the Premier League and may be one to watch if we can’t strike a loan deal with the Champions.

Here’s what Edwards had to say on the podcast:

“I don’t think I’m speaking out of turn now when someone told me back in October that he realised that he’d made a big mistake. I think we could all see that mistake unfolding in real-time, it looked like a bit of a car crash transfer from the moment he made it.”

“He’s offered himself to Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich. That is slightly more credible than Jesse Lingard offering himself to Barcelona.

“I think he will certainly be able to do a job if he comes back to the Premier League. There’s been conversations at Newcastle, obviously that would be controversial he’s a very prominent former Sunderland player. I think there will be conversations with them.

“I think there will be clubs who are thinking about it but his current employers don’t want to let him go. As ever with football, when a player decides they want to leave and they’re desperate to get out, that normally leads to the player leaving but we’re going to have to see how hard he wants to push.”

It’s a hard no from me. He may have bags of experience, leadership and may fancy a return to the North East, but a Mackem on huge money who is on the way out is not the answer.

  1. can’t reconcile how a player of his age would fit into a high press hard running team and that’s before the emotive Sunderland connections and frothing over PIF links are considered. Oh yeah and how exactly does an excruciatingly high wage not bust any PSR constraints
This one seems (polite) far fetched
