Big claims from Italy: Toon ‘ready to make offer’ as chief scout travels to watch Serie A star

Some big claims have emerged from Italy today over our ongoing interest in Atalanta star Ederson; the Brazilian midfielder who has been linked with a move to Newcastle United on several occasions over the past few months.

TuttoMercatoWeb report that head of recruitment Steve Nickson has been in Bergamo this week to watch the 24-year-old, where he saw the South American score in a 5-0 win over Frosinone.

It’s been suggested that we cannot make a big-money move this month due to FFP, but it’s claimed we’ve been ‘trying to see if there was room’ to sign Ederson by using up some of our allocated summer budget this month.

The report states that we are ‘ready to make an important offer’ and were keen to make our interest known on Monday. However, Atalanta currently say he is not for sale and prefer to sell in the summer, where they’d have more time to find a replacement.

Atalanta currently sit in 5th in Serie A and just one point from the top four and Ederson has been one of their star players this season. While it would be a huge boost to sign a midfielder of his quality this month, it will be a tough deal to do in the final two weeks of the window. Hopefully, though, this is a sign we are very much active in the market and looking to do deals following news of Joelinton’s potentially season-ending injury.
