Amanda Staveley offers transfer hope after Saudi chief arrives on Tyneside – Is something afoot?

Newcastle co-owner Amanda Staveley has turned Geordies’ heads with a post of a familiar dining table on Instagram – just days after chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan touched down on Tyneside.

As Newcastle look to strike a deal for a midfielder in the final week of the January transfer window, Staveley shared a snap of a dining room in Alnwick Castle.

Toon fans will remember it was Alnwick that played host to the club’s ownership during meetings that were included in last year’s Amazon fly-on-the-wall documentary, where important details about finance and strategy were discussed in an episode that ended with Anthony Gordon signing from Everton.

It has given hope to supporters that a deal will be done in the coming days amid an injury crisis which has recently seen Joelinton sidelined for the rest of the season. The presence of Al-Rumayyan has also sparked interest among supporters.

Given the emphasis on bringing in reinforcements to aid a squad besieged by injury, it is almost certain that transfer targets will have been on the agenda around that Alnwick table.

Plenty of names have been linked with transfers both incoming and outgoing over the last few days. The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards and Mark Douglas at iNews suggest that one substantial sale – Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron have been tipped to leave – could free up funds to pursue the likes of Everton’s Amadou Onana or Morgan Gibbs-White of Nottingham Forest.

It may be that fans have to say goodbye to favourite if the club’s resolve is tested, but a powerful midfielder is on the shopping list and it remains to be seen how much cash Al-Rumayyan can sanction for a deal. The club are wary of profit and sustainability rules.

Whatever happens, it is set to be a rollercoaster end to January.
