Eddie Howe reacts to blue card proposal – Nail on the head?

As revealed by The Telegraph yesterday, a new blue card is set to be introduced in football as part of sin-bin trials which could be rolled out next season, starting in the FA Cup.

They will give the referee the power to send a player off for 10 minutes and could have huge impacts on Newcastle going forward as a team that typically likes to play on the edge at times.

A blue card will be awarded for cynical fouls or for showings of dissent, and picking g up either two blue cards or a blue and a yellow card would result in the player having to miss the rest of the game.

Eddie Howe was asked about this during Friday’s press conference and it’s fair to say he’s not a fan, fearing it would “add more confusion” to the game:

“I’m not a big fan to be honest. That’s what yellow cards are for.

“The current system works well but just needs to be applied right.

“A blue card would just add more confusion, in my opinion.”

I totally agree with Eddie on this one. Why complicate a system that already works? It just feels like the decision-makers are determined to change so many aspects of the game, whether it be VAR or on-field laws. If it’s not broke, why fix it?

Trials have already taken place in youth football and the IFAB have come to the decisions that they should now be trialled in professional football starting from next season.

This could be bad news for players like Bruno Guimaraes or Joelinton who absolutely love a cynical foul, so it will be interesting to see how it impacts every team in the Premier League should it used.

  1. These clowns are ruining the beautiful game!!.

They brought VAR in and have made a right pigs ar$e of that – and instead of focusing on fixing that they look to introduce this nonsense.

Add FFP into the mix and it’s the first time in over 35 years of being in love with football that I’m being put off it – not even Ashley managed to achieve that!!.
