Alan Shearer names striker Newcastle should sign this summer – “He’s a really good option”

Alan Shearer has backed Newcastle to make a summer move for Brentford striker Ivan Toney, believing he’d be a “really good option” for Eddie Howe to have.

With Callum Wilson approaching the final 12 months of his contract and linked with a summer exit in recent weeks, the club are likely to sign another forward ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Signing Toney will easier said than done with so many clubs looking to sign the in-form striker in the next window, with Arsenal and Chelsea both linked with the former Newcastle man.

Toney recently came back into the side after an eight month ban which he received for gambling, but it hasn’t taken him long to get back up to speed with three goals in four games.

Speaking on the Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer said: “I think he’s a really good player and I think he’s a really good option.

“Newcastle need to improve in that department, they need another option in there, so I don’t think there will be any shortage of suitors for Toney.”

Brentford look to have resigned themselves to the fact that Toney will be leaving them in the summer with Thomas Frank’s accepting that a move is on the cards as he enters the final year of his contract.

  1. Shearer thinking with his heart rather than his head.
Does he not understand the situation Newcastle are in regards FFP?
    It’s not going to happen.

  2. Was Dan Ashworth involved in the signing of striker Alexander Issac.
Prior to Alexander joining us, we only had one part-time striker (due to injurys).
Since Alexander joined us, we now have 2 part time strikers.
How is it possible we signed another part time striker.

Since then we have signed the Italian midfielder, who after just a few games for us gets
    a 10 month ban.

At the time Ivan Toney a former Newcastle player was under review for match betting, and
was given a 8 month ban.
Every one at Newcastle must have known about this ban.
So who was it that that forgot to ask relevant question at the interview stages of this signing.
This is very poor interviewing , at its worst.
THE FANS DESERVE FAR BETTER THAN THIS.
