Two names linked with Newcastle job – Absolute nonsense or ones to watch?

Fresh from our unconvincing FA Cup win over Blackburn last night, we’ve seen two managers linked with Eddie Howe’s job at Newcastle United today.

According to Christian Falk – the head of football at Sport Bild – Newcastle are considering a summer move for former Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann.

He reports that the 36-year-old is debating whether to sign a new deal with the German national team or return the club management, also revealing that he is represented by the same agent as Newcastle centre-back Fabian Schar.

Elsewhere, it’s believed highly-rated Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim is also ‘appreciated’ by Toon chiefs. This comes from journalist Fraser Fletcher, who has also previously reported on our alleged interest in Nagelsman.

Just a few days ago, The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards reported that Eddie Howe retains the full backing of Newcastle’s owners. Since then, we’ve progressed to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. It was a huge win, but the performance was alarming, leaving fans wary of Saturday’s meeting with an in-form Wolves side who went above us in the league last weekend.

Personally, I’d be shocked if Howe wasn’t given the remainder of the season. It’s vital we get our identity back, improve defensively and qualify for Europe in some capacity, but I can see our owners giving Howe every chance to turn things around given all of the mitigating factors that have negatively impacted our season.

Who knows. These could be lazy links from journalists attempting to capitalise on a tough period for Howe or two names who are genuinely under consideration just in case our form fails to improve over the comings months.

  1. Eddie Howe looked more than a little stressed last night which didn’t look good.
I agree with you Olly that his job will be safe until the end of the season.
PIF won’t make any rash decisions, from what we’ve seen of them so far they are very calculated in their actions and will no doubt have plans B,C and more.

  2. I think since the exit from the champs league and injuries did not help morale .. but something seems off with the squad .. they have lost energy and belief and if Eddie can’t manage to change that .. the owners will change him

  3. If you believe that our rise to the top should take 6 years, and we’re 4th in the Prem and in Europe in 2, where does that leave you?
Ahead of schedule , definitely, but do you get to say, “but we’ve got another 4 years”?
No, you don’t. Your bosses then use 4th and CL as the starting point for the next year and are just looking for improvement.
    Oops.
To dig over some old ground we still have a weak squad. A strong first 11 (when fit) but a weak squad.
We need either qualification for Europe again, or winning the FA Cup, or the season will be considered a “disappointment”.
And when I say Europe, I mean the real comp, not that “participation certificate” of a made up one for teams that feel left out.
Our owners are not renowned for their patience when they don’t get what they want. If this season is not a “success”, Eddie will be on his way in the summer. Don’t worry, I doubt he will be responding to requests to pop into the Saudi Embassy – instead, he’ll move into the England job and we’ll all be jumping up and down with glee.
