England make telling Newcastle move ahead of 2pm announcement – Report

Some interesting claims have emerged from The Mail’s Craig Hope regarding the fitness of Anthony Gordon and a potential England call-up.

Not only does he report that the winger has avoided any serious injury at Chelsea and is likely to be back in training over the coming days, it’s believed England chiefs have contacted Newcastle United for an update on his availability.

It remains to be seen if he will be selected ahead of today’s 2pm squad announcement, but this seems like a telling move from the Three Lions. Would they be checking on his fitness hours before Gareth Southgate names his latest squad if they had no intention of handing him his first senior call-up?

Time will tell and there’s still every chance they err on the side of caution and resist selecting him if there’s any niggling concerns, but it sounds (to me) like he’s in with a very good chance of making it for upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Belgium if he proves to be fit and over any knee concerns. We shall see at 2pm.
