Sky Sports: £40m talks collapse – Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Yankuba Minteh deals off

According to reports this afternoon, Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s proposed move from Everton to Newcastle United is now off – and it seems Yankuba Minteh won’t be going in the opposite direction.

Sky Sports’ Keith Downie reports that talks were taking place between the two clubs, but the Toffees were demanding £40m for the striker, which has seen Newcastle end their interest.

Downie adds that Minteh is now ‘very unlikely’ to end up at Goodison Park, with Everton’s pursuit of the Gambian likely relying on a big-money exit for Calvert-Lewin. Instead, Lyon are emerging as real contenders to sign the winger following ‘strong interest’ in recent days.

Calvert-Lewin mat have improved under Eddie Howe – a manager who has improved so many since arriving on Tyneside – but he’s had fitness issues, is out of contract next summer and has only managed 14 league goals over the past three seasons. As a result, it’s no wonder we’ve walked away if Everton wanted £35-£40m.

The Chronicle report that AC Milan are also keen on the former England international, while the i name West Ham and Brentford as two Premier League clubs showing interest.

  1. Regardless of who we sign, this is the best bit of news we’ll get this summer. We’ve seriously dodged a bullet here, just when the weekend’s stories had me worried that our recruitment team had completely lost their marbles. We can all now breathe a huge sigh of relief!

  2. We did get someone from Everton today though in Aaron Apia 16 a left sided CB another good prospect coming through the door.
I’ve been waiting years for our club to get their 💩 together and put some effort into the academy and not one owner has until now.
This is the best thing about the take over for me.
