Keith Downie has just been speaking live on Sky Sports News from outside St James’ Park, offering a promising update that suggests the Marc Guehi saga is finally nearing a positive conclusion.
He reports that Newcastle resumed talks with Crystal Palace yesterday and has now been told that we’re moving closer to an agreement, feeling there’s now a ‘good chance’ that the deal goes through.
Downie reveals that we have explored alternatives, but Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba will cost big money and sources in Germany have indicated that he’s unlikely to leave the Bundesliga side. Watch what he had to say below:

The Telegraph have also issued an update similar information, suggesting a breakthrough could finally be close, while Downie was also bullish on our hopes of landing Guehi when speaking on the Loaded Mag Youtube channel last night.
We won’t count our chickens just yet, but it does feel like we’re close to that ‘breaking news’ that an agreement has finally been reached between the two clubs. Fingers crossed.

On and on this goes. But no doubt, a huge statement should we pull it off. Those who’ve soured on Geuhi through this process should stay patient. EH can only further improve the lad. Has a track record for it. We can score goals. That’s no problem. As much as I’d love to see a flashy RW through the door first, job number one is defense. Last season we leaked too many. Pope back fit gives huge confidence to those of us watching and those wearing the stripes. Guehi would only further improve our poor away form. Keep it tight and strangle points out of a game the way we’ve just done against Southampton. Squeaky *** time meets Toon sh*thousery. Our away kit alone will boost our away performances-I’m sure of it.

I’m puzzled by those who’ve lost patience and are saying move on – those same people saying the alternatives aren’t good enough 🤔 what’s the answer then?! 🤷🏼♂️

I wonder if long protracted negotiations for players still used to happen in the past, before social media existed and we just didn’t hear so much about it? Now there is so much rumour and speculation winding people up.
How can anyone know the details that have been circulating around?

If this comes off reminds me a lot of classic Kevin Keegan from his first spell as manager knew the players he wanted was prepared to wait and show patience until they signed despite the outside noise and mass panic

Howe has always said we will only take players who improve the team.
If he’s not good enough and there’s nobody else available, we don’t get anyone.

This has just become silly.
Obviously Mitchell isn’t all he’s cracked up to be or this would have been sealed weeks ago, and if the deal is not viable we’d be 5 alternatives down the road by now.
And we wouldn’t be waiting until the last few days for a striker / winger or whatever else we’re after.
Could this be the straw that sends Eddie off to St George’s Park?

Not sure one transfer saga defined our new sporting director who has done great things in pervious roles at Southampton, Spurs, Leipzig and Monaco…

Byker- none of us want to see Eddie go. We all fear for any reason for it. This lad is top of his list. If ‘The Club’ can’t pull off these signings then his head may be turned. As you said, we need first team improvements.
Sharpy- Aye. We’re all experts now aren’t we. Social media and 24 hour news cycles, but still, we know nowt. We’re not at the big table and quick to make judgements. These days, eh?
On another note, imagine being a Palace fan right now. Blimey.
