Howe’s transfer hint when asked if Newcastle can sign a right-winger and centre-back

Eddie Howe has hinted that Newcastle will not be able to sign a right-winger AND centre-back over the final four days of the transfer window – but insists there’s still a lot of work behind the scenes to improve the squad.

Signing both has been a top priority heading into the summer, but it seems PSR may impact our ability to pull off two big-money moves this week.

On incomings and outgoings, Howe said: “At the moment, keeping players [this week] is a success, as I sit here today. In terms of incomings, that work’s still going on behind the scenes. A few days left, I think everyone’s just trying their best to improve the squad. We will wait and see what happens over the next few days. Of course, it only takes one player to make a window a success or failure, however people view it.”

Asked “Can you sign a right-winger & centre-back?” by a journalist this morning, Howe said: “Probably not, no,” suggesting there’s not the funds available to sign both of our top priorities before Friday’s deadline.
He was then asked to give an update on the Marc Guehi saga, but refused to talk about individual players following rumours that we’re closing in on agreement in the region of £70m for the Crystal Palace captain.
On Kieran Trippier, Howe insisted the 33-year-old is “in a good place” and won’t hold any future talks with the full-back this week, feeling his “galvanizing” effect on the team when he came on at Bournemouth was a positive sign in response to reports suggesting he is looking to leave.

“I think when you look at his performance on Sunday, that was a performance of someone that was focused and ready to help the team, I thought he did – in every aspect. All the subs did. Kieran’s experience and know how on the pitch seemed to have a galvanising effect on the group.”

  1. If we’ve got £70m for Guehi – we’ve got enough to sign the players we need this summer!!.

Sharpy17 honestly don’t think we have FFP and PSR are really hampering us coincidence Bruno release clause ended in June when we ended up scrambling around trying to sell players because no one came in for him if we want a right winger think we will have to sell Almiron and where is the buyer fans are saying go abroad for who that will improve us especially with no Europe and top centre halfs still cost a lot of money from abroad

When you say no one came in for Bruno do you mean no one came in at all, or no one came in at 100 mill?

  4. Isn’t this the same Eddie Howe who said last week that he doesn’t receive regular transfer updates from Mitchell?

  5. It is clear that Howe wants Guess at all costs and with the financial issues we can only afford one player due to his price.
Personally I would have gone for a cheaper option at CB and brought in a winger, but I am not the manager and some players on inflated wages don’t want to leave.
Forest keeper we bought for £20 million was I believe part of the Anderson deal that both clubs had to do for PSR

  6. We are apparently looking to do a deal similar to Hall for Trafford with too many on the books, yet we can’t get a Right winger…this just sucks big time!

Probably no one came in at 100 million

  8. Eddie it seems is desperate for Guehi and wants to spend the whole budget on him.

There is better value out there for sure, we just need to stop buying over priced English players and look at the bigger European market.

As much as I like Eddie, we were dire away from home last season, looked the same at Bournemouth at weekend, looks to me like he has runout of ideas on how to set the team up.

Any team with top 4 ambition should not be outplayed by Southampton and Bournemouth like we have in opening 2 weeks.

Eddie needs to get it sorted or we’ll end up top of the bottom half in 11/12th position.
