First Half

19th minute – Everton thought they had the lead. A fantastic cross from the right-hand side was headed into the net by Doucouré, but he was in an offside position when the ball was played into the box, so the goal was chalked off.

There was a check for a possible penalty to Newcastle for a shirt pull. Tarkowski had Tonali by the neck and threw him to the ground. They had to give this one. The referee went over to the monitor.

30th minute – Decision made – the penalty was given. It was an easy call for the referee at the monitor. A daft move by the Everton player. You can’t do that in the box these days. Tarkowski argued with the ref and needed to be careful. He could protest all he wanted, but the referee had made the right call.

34th minute – Anthony Gordon stepped up to the spot and placed the ball down. It was saved. A poor penalty from Gordon, but Jordan Pickford deserved credit. He guessed the right way and kept the ball out of the net. It remained 0-0. Not the return to Goodison Park he would of hoped for and the home fans are giving him some stick now.

Yellow Card – A rash challenge from McNeil saw the Everton man booked. Guimarães wrestled the ball away from him, and McNeil lunged in, taking the Brazilian down. A moment of frustration there.

Second Half

The second half started quietly for both sides. Pickford had been solid between the sticks and kept things tidy for Everton, while Newcastle had been limited to half chances. Everton made their first change, with Gueye coming on for Mangala.

60th minute – Newcastle applied decent pressure as Pickford saved again from a wide shot, resulting in a corner. It was a decent delivery, but Everton managed to clear their lines. Newcastle dominated possession at this stage.

62nd minute – Miguel Almirón came on for Harvey Barnes.

66th minute – Big chance for Everton. A great ball was played into Calvert-Lewin, but he was denied by a wonderful save from Nick Pope. The ball then fell to Gueye, who had the goal at his mercy. Luckily for Newcastle, he blazed his effort over the crossbar. It should have been 1-0.

71st minute – Newcastle made three changes: Longstaff, Livramento, and Willock replaced Trippier, Tonali, and Murphy.

81st minute – Gordon came close again. It really wasn’t his day. He received the ball and darted into the box but lashed his shot over the bar. He got everything right except the finish and would be kicking himself.

89th minute – Joelinton had an effort from range, but it went just wide. It was well worth a go, but he couldn’t quite get the technique right.

92nd minute – Booking for Schär. He pulled down Calvert-Lewin as he made a jinking run towards goal. Schär had to bring him down, and the referee had no choice but to book him. No complaints from Schär.

Full-Time

The whistle blows for full-time. It wasn’t the worst 0-0 but most of the action happened in the first half. Anthony Gordon had a nightmare return to Goodison Park as he missed some huge chances with one being a penalty. All in all a draw is a fair result. Up next for Toon is a home game against Brighton.
