Former Mag named ‘favourite’ for Man City role after shock exit

According to Fabrizio Romano, former Newcastle United man Hugo Viana is now the favourite to become Manchester City’s new director of football following the news that of Txiki Begiristain would be departing.

Begiristain had joined the Citizens back in 2012 and played a huge role in bringing Pep Guardiola to the club having played with him at Barcelona and in the Spanish national team.

Viana, who made 56 appearances in total in a black and white shirt, has been doing some stellar work with Sporting Lisbon where he has helped to bring in the likes of Viktor Gyokeres and Ousmane Diomande. He was also linked with a similar role at Newcastle earlier this year before Paul Mitchell eventually replaced Dan Ashworth.

Man City are clearly very impressed with his work and are hoping to persuade him to be a part of their project as they undergo a bit of a structural change at the top of the club.

This comes just after City’s positive news regarding their legal battle with the Premier League, though it is understood that there have been victories for both sides.

  1. Begiristain said he would not be working after he turns 60 so retiring and guess what he turned 60 this year so not really a shock exit.
