Sky: Newcastle close to £30m breakthrough – New bid imminent & player wants move

If the last few weeks of the transfer window have taught us anything as Newcastle fans, it’s to not get hopes up too soon.

Having cruelly fallen short in negotiations for a number of attacking targets like Liam Delap, Joao Pedro and Hugo Ekitike, many fans will no doubt feel pessimistic over our renewed interest in signing Brentford forward Yoane Wissa.

But the news that came through on Tuesday afternoon that we’ve officially launched a bid to sign the Congolese star show that there’s still signs of life in us this window.

And although we’ve had this initial bid rejected by the Bees, the general consensus seems to be that we’ll progress quickly and are confident about getting our man…

Sky chief issues bold Wissa update

According to Sky Sports’ Keith Downie, Newcastle are set to return with £30m bid plus add-ons for Yoane Wissa after our opening bid worth £25m was rejected.

Writing on X, the North East reporter reveals that “direct talks” are taking place and, perhaps crucially, there is now a feeling this deal “should get done.”

Downie’s words are backed up by The Mail’s Craig Hope, who has also stated that £30m should be enough to strike a deal, with Brentford’s previous £50m valuation set to drop significantly now the player has indicated his wish to leave.

Personal terms will not be a problem and Downie adds that the player is keen to join Eddie Howe’s Newcastle, with the chance to play Champions League football on Tyneside also a huge factor.

With just one year left on his current contract (pending a bonus one year option), the Bees do risk losing one of their biggest stars on a free next summer, so may be wise to sell now.

Could anything derail Wissa deal?

Should Brentford accept our second offer around the £30m mark, then it will be a fantastic bit of business for the club, securing a Premier League proven striker (32 goals in his last two seasons) to replace Callum Wilson.

Perhaps the only obstacle we could encounter concerning Wissa is Spurs. They can also offer Champions League football, a chance to remain in London and play under Thomas Frank once again.

However, Spurs’ have already bolstered their attack quite heavily this window, having confirmed Mathys Tel’s transfer from Bayern Munich, also signing West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus for big money.

Meanwhile the current attacking situation at St James’ Park practically invites Wissa to form a two man partnership with Isak, with our attacking-minded style-of-play heavily suited to the 28-year-old.

  1. He’s a very decent player, his age means there’ll be no sell on in years to come, if we can get him, a centre half, a keeper and cover for both full back and midfield, then it’s been a decent transfer window although we’ve been beaten to our first choice every time.

Livramento, Hall, Trippier, Krafth, Targett, Burn, Ashby, A. Murphy, Shahar… We have plenty full backs and cover for those 2 positions.

  3. As a Wilson replacement, Wissa is an upgrade already. Hope he’s the next Papiss Cisse.
