Newcastle deal collapses as Aston Villa are hit by UEFA rules – Player to sign elsewhere

Deadline day has often been a quiet one on Tyneside in recent summer windows – but today couldn’t be any further from that as THREE big-money moves are all in play.

Alexander Isak is on Merseyside and set to join Liverpool for £130m, while Yoane Wissa is currently in Newcastle finalising a medical ahead of his £50m-plus switch from Brentford.

But the bombshell news on Monday lunchtime centred around Will Osula, with Craig Hope revealing that Frankfurt are ‘on the verge’ of signing the Newcastle striker for £30m.

Another twist has emerged, however, as the North East reporter reveals that Aston Villa had also agreed a deal with Newcastle for the 22-year-old forward – only for UEFA spending rules to complicate a deal.

Writing for The Mail’s live blog, Hope said: ‘Aston Villa had also agreed a fee with Newcastle for William Osula, but the move was complicated by UEFA spending rules.’

As a result, it looks like Osula’s switch to Bundesliga side Frankfurt will now go ahead, where he could ironically be replacing Liverpool star and former Toon target Hugo Ekitike!

Osula signed from Sheffield United in a £10m deal rising to £15m last summer and it’s claimed his proposed switch to Germany will include a buy-back clause for Newcastle, where he has scored three goals in 22 games.

Elsewhere at Villa, they are set for a busy day, with Man Utd’s Jadon Sancho and Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott closing in on moves to Unai Emery’s side, who are yet to score three games into the new season.

  1. Villa is experiencing the struggles we’ve faced during the last few transfer windows, but this summer, we’re making up for the time lost. If we can finalise this deal, it will be a fantastic move for everyone concerned, particularly the player. A bonus in this chaotic market.

  2. A third, young, striker would make me happier, otherwise Wissa is replacing Wilson AND Osula. A weak arrangement.

  3. Maybe the £25m Sorloth deal isn’t dead in the water. Hopefully his dad didn’t know everything or his son has decided last minute to try pastures anew.

Or even better we may have hijacked the similar price Boniface deal from Milan. They’d offered a loan to buy for £25m & we may have offered the money upfront to Bayer. It’d be effectively an exchange of forwards.

Would be amazing if either of these happened. Another UCL/EL experienced striker in to help with the European campaign.

  4. Also seems we’re in for Jayden Oosterwolde from Fenerbahce who like BDB plays both left sided defensive positions & would be a cover for both him/Hall (esp LB – replacing Targett) similar to Krafth for the right sided positions. A loan converted to buy next summer. Fener are rejecting it ‘coz they have no time to replace him. Maybe some upfront money to allow them to make a loan/buy of their own? Think their window runs for an extra week. This would then cover the last hole in the squad. Injuries will happen this campaign but we seem to be prepping for it. As long as a Wissa cover for Afcon comes (that can’t be Boniface as he’d leave too) this would’ve been a near perfect window despite Isak/Liverpool’s best efforts to derail it.

  5. Bafana:
Would love Fratessi & Sorloth it will b a perfect Window.

Hopefully Frattesi goes nowhere today. This is a deal we’re likely to revisit in Jan. By then we’d have seen if Miley’s up to it (should be) or needs a loan away for 5 months (playing regularly) before rejoining the squad. We’d also have realised that Ramsey & Willock are too similar in profile & the latter would have 18 months left on his contract in Jan so surely we’d move him on, likely to Palace who have a gap on their LHS (unless Esse fills the Eze gap next few months), for £30-40m all included, roughly the amount we’d pay for Frattesi. By Jan we’d also find out if past knee injuries have affected Frattesi’s level or he’s back to his best (in whatever limited game time Inter give him) with the caveat being that if he does well his price/suitors may also go up. We might also do a permanent deal straight away instead of a loan to buy now with the Isak sale money also in. He is another with decent Champions League experience & the 7th & 8th round of games in Jan (incl PSG away) could be pivotal wrt moving into the knock-outs, which would generate it’s own revenue. Following on from my post on an earlier article, I hope we use any leftover Isak sale money in Jan for a left footed attacker/playmaker too, as well as a backup for Lewis Hall if Oosterwolde doesn’t arrive tonight.
