Demba Ba deal in doubt.

A risky signing.
It looks as though the near-certain deal to bring Demba Ba to Newcastle may not be so near-certain after all.

Speaking to the BBC, Alan Pardew has revealed that the deal has hit a snag thanks to the well-known medical issues that the player has and that a deal is still some way off being concluded thanks to some “big hurdles” that need to be overcome before the Senegalese international can sign on the dotted line.

“There is an issue about his medical, and there has been in the past,” Pardew told BBC Newcastle. “We’ve got to overcome those things, but hopefully he can join the club. I think he’ll be a big success.”

Pardew added: “He’s a player that has a natural eye for a goal, my connections at West Ham are very good and I know everything about him.”

“I’m pretty relaxed that he can be a success at Newcastle if we can get him but it’s a big if at the moment because there are some big hurdles to get across.”

What isn’t quoted is the fact that apparently Ba’s condition is, ahem “manageable”, although quite how manageable a degenerative bone disease can be is something that is what beyond my knowledge base. Is there a doctor in the house?

Clearly there are concerns over the medical condition of the player which will of course raise further questions about the wisdom of the move. What I will say though is that despite his apparent fragility he is yet to suffer a real serious injury. I guess this is what the medical is there to look at, so they can reasonably judge the risk of something happening.

So to me the moves look it may not go ahead after all, despite Pardew’s positivity about the situation. I mean lets face it, he hardly has a good track record of getting his own way now does he? And if the deal looks like it will backfire on the club you can be certain that plug will be pulled along with the rug that is underneath the manager.

I do hope something can be sorted though. A look at Demba Ba’s goalscoring record will show you that he can finish and knows where the back of the net is. We need a goalscorer. It’s a match made in heaven.

Unfortunately it’s turning out to be a transfer from hell.

  1. Some people are stupid. If you went on a 7 day holiday with 500 quid would you spend it all on the first day, er no so why would the club spend £20M on the first day of the transfer window. If Wet Spam were so desperate to give us £4M for a midfielder nearly 30 on a 5 year deal, more fool them. We already know how foolish and desperate they are because of Demba Ba. It feels like the ball is in our court at least with Ashley I’l say that. Instead of FFS spending stupid money on flops.

You have hit the nail on the head. The signings we have been working on in the past few weeks are the ones that needed to be done quickly. ie beating people to Cabaye, N.Taylor and Ba. People forgot there is another 10 weeks in the transfer window…

  3. @StuGre…….he’ll have passed a medical, but it won’t be one that involves looking at, touching or even breathing on his knees 😉 😀

  6. Colin has also tweated that Ba has signed. Does sound like the medical issue was insurance related perhaps!

  7. What do they do anyway, hit his knee with one of those hammers and see if it twitches. 😆

If it’s like in that Film Goal with Anna Friel sign me up for a medical tomorow. 😛

  8. Senegal international striker Demba Ba has joined Newcastle United, signing a three-year-deal at St. James’ Park.

The former West Ham front man, who scored 7 goals in 12 league appearances for the Hammers last season, is Alan Pardew’s second signing of the summer, following on from French midfielder Yohan Cabaye.

The 26-year-old was born in Sevres, a suburb of Paris, and is one of eight children. Capped 10 times by Senegal, with three international goals to his name, Ba has also had spells with Rouen, Mouscron and 1899 Hoffenheim. He was briefly on Watford’s books, back in 2005, but ended up starting his professional career at Rouen in the Normandy region of France.

His international debut, coupled with a debut goal, came in June 2007 against Tanzania.

    Manager Alan Pardew said:

“Demba made a great impression with West Ham last season and is a great signing for this club. He has pace, excellent technical ability, is good in the air and, it goes without saying, has the ability to consistently find the back of the net. Moreover he has a great passion to play for Newcastle United.”

Ba will wear the number 19 shirt next season.

An interview with Demba will be shown on nufc tv later today

  9. Love the timing of this thread, probably just as they were shaking hands and taking the photos with the shirt. 🙂

Ah.. we’re simple folk really, easily pleased.

  10. Hope we dont sign African players for key positions. They’re gonna be missing out on a load of football with the African Cup of Nations.

  11. See I knew if I put a knocker on the deal it would happen. I also knew it would happen after I went to work 😡

  12. 19 hey?

So we still have a vacancy for a number 9!

His goal scoring record looks pretty impressive to be honest.

So far we’ve brought in two decent players and haven’t spent a penny yet!

Should be another 5 to come through the door.

Good point…At least the country he plays for are rubbish so lets hope they get knocked out early…But Tiote plays for the best, so lets hope we sign this Matuidi lad for cover.

  14. Cool – we need another striker, Ba will be playing ANC next season (along with Tiote and Shola !!!! ), we can’t rely on lovenman to be our striker for 6 weeks !

      (Quote)

  15. Stuart – that’s what I hoped. It seems he won’t be the main brought in, Unless Xisco moves from 19 to 9 😉

  18. Does anyone know why Ba already has a shirt number, buy Cabaye doesn’t? Is Yohan holding out for Joey’s #7 or something?

  23. MDS- I’m not sure I like the sounds of that. I’d rather he took 4 or something and got it over with. 14 or 17 wouldn’t be bad, either.

  24. I love these signings, the anti-Pardew, anti-Ashley, anti-NUFC brigade are gonna get quieter day by day methinks.

  25. Witters – so far so good Ba and Cabaye in Nolan out plus the young French lad? Good start. Still plenty of money left to spend 😀

      (Quote)

  26. Very chuffed; another potentially great bit of biz by the club to end an otherwise rather depressing week. Wuddun, people. 😀

      (Quote)

  27. Just a thought: do we get a discount if we by a replica shirt with his name on? Not exactly using up the letter stocks, is it?

  28. #NUFC 6/4 to sign Ba. That would be Ba-rilliant! #cheap 😉

Sorry lads, but i knew this 8 days ago 😉

  29. now we have a front line of

    cabaye tiote
    barton ben arfa guitierez
    ba

that could hammer any team imo

      (Quote)

  30. How about this lads;

    Barnetta – 6m
    N’zog – 12m
    Erdinc – 8m
    Taylor – 1m
    Gardener – 5m

    Total: 32m

    rest is wages?

      (Quote)

  31. Craig, I’m pretty sure they’ll put the number 9 on the next striker to come in. With Ranger likely to leave and Carroll yet to be replaced so to speak we’ll definitely spend money on another striker (worth about 5m-8m) and give him the special jersey.

      (Quote)

  32. Im not struck on Erdic like. I think he’s too similar to what we’ve already got. We need a Lovenkrands replacement IMHO.

      (Quote)

  33. I’m not so sure. I wouldn’t be surprised if they left the No 9 unassigned until someone ‘earned it’ as before. I’d like that. Nobody should take it on reputation elsewhere; it’s what you do in black and white that matters.

      (Quote)

  34. Its still the early side of transfer window, I’m sure we’ll be able to attract better players other than Barnetta, Erdinc and Insomnia, not to say they’re not good enough, will be more than happy to have em all but keeping my fingers crossed that we’ll sign someone special like Ben Arfa 😀

    exciting days indeed

      (Quote)

  35. Whumpie

Aye, they should retire it IMO. Martins and Carroll have devalued it. Should have retired it with Shearer until another Shearer comes along.

  36. 142….. 😯 i would take barnetta and zogs and any good striker right now in heart beat and shut up shop. two top top players mate.

Good interview from him though, pretty down to earth.

  38. Don’t mention Zog. I’m having trouble dealing with a team full of frogs as it is!
