Game on! Newcastle v Fulham #bringbackthescarves

Bringing back the scarves against Fulham.
Newcastle take on Fulham today knowing that a win would see the home side have their best start to a Premier League season for 16 years.

Not since the title challenging days of Kevin Keegan have we been in with a chance of making a start like this, and with the international break coming up this home match gives the players a chance to send the fans into the two week break knowing that despite everything else that is going at the moment the results have stacked up.

Today will also signal the start of the ‘bring back the scarves’ campaign which has been set up by various fan groups using social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook to spread the word. The aim is to create a vociferous atmosphere to spur our players on and strike fear into the opposition, which has of course had the backing of this site and has attracted interest from the press along the way. It will be interesting to see how it pans out.

Back to the match today, and it’s fair to say that Fulham are a bogey team of ours. We’ve not beaten them in four attempts although their results art St James’ Park are being somewhat overstated in my opinion – they have won here three times.

It will still be a tough game of course as Fulham are good, well organised side, but at least it’s at home. Last season that ‘home’ comment would have been laughed off such was our awful home record, but today gives us a chance to try and put the right. Quite simply you need to win your home games, and we failed to do that enough last season. Will we see an improvement on that front?

If you haven’t already had a read of the match report you can do so by clicking here. It was published yesterday but I didn’t leave it up long enough thanks to the Carling Cup draw which needed covering so feel free to take a look at some potential team selections, injury news and some facts and stats ahead of the match.

As far as viewing the match goes, there is no UK TV coverage although there are plenty of channels overseas that are showing the match. I sometimes feel we get a raw when it comes to TV coverage in the UK but still… This means tnat those who can’t make the game today will have to make do with an internet stream. The closure of MyP2P doesn’t help the cause so if any of you guys and gals manage to find a decent one on your travels make sure you share it with the rest of us and leave a link in the ‘comments’ section below.

That’s about it really. Kick-off is at 1pm UK time so make sure you adjust your clocks/watches accordingly so you don’t have to miss any of the match. Team news is below.

  2. Excellent result against a Europa pedigree team. Important win with some notable performances. Tangible improvements through the game and some tangible improvements game to game as well.

Best is finding his fitness, Cabaye just gets better and better, Ba looked more effective too. Still solid defensively and Krul is a fooking legend in the make.

Not sure if Krul or Best should be MoM.

  3. Krul out of position for their goal, but they deserved a goal out of the game.

We can forgive Krul for one mistake as he has been superb today.

    He IS our no.1

  4. fecking buzzing!! 2 wins and a draw – 7pts!!! haway the lads!!! krul , BEST cabaye and the center halfs , class

Heavy pressure from Fulham, Jonas held it well at the back and earned a free kick.

Not long after Ba gets it into the area and fires one deflected onto the crossbar. Corner resulting in some argy bargy in the corner area.

Went out for a goal kick, pinged up the field and Smith brings someone down, free kick is claimed by Krul confidently.

Ball gets pinged around midfield, ref blows, full time!

  6. We should have signed Dembele. He has been their best player every single time we have played them.

  7. Vuckic seems to have broken a finger. Shame as he looked very good when he came on today. He and Obertan look to be on the same wavelength.

No idea about Ba’s shot, everything happened all too quickly.

Their goal, free kick was floated in, Krul in no man’s land, header floated over him he had no chance.

  9. Good 3 points in a very scrappy game. Pardew’s tactics seem…….well inexplicable. Off the ball we are good there is no doubt about that. Our attack is not very good but our defense is not conceding goals and that is always a good platform.

Best was very Good today his goals called for foresight for the first, and good close control for the second. Obertan was great today there is no doubt he was our biggest contributor to our attacks. Jonas also Good and Krul was superb.

7 points in 3 games is a good return.

  10. I thought Jonas had another solid game there. Never gives up, runs his socks off. Definately one of my favourite players. Watch him get sold.

  11. Thanks.

Obertan looked in and out of the game at times. Crappy first 20 minutes, but definitely pulled together and bossed the game as time went by. They scrapped back in to it, from the sound of things at the end.

  12. I think we can lay off the doom and gloom for a while lads, another 3 points in the bag and flying high in the league at the moment.

As much as we talk about reality the facts so far this season are P 3 W 2 D1 L0 GS 3 GC 1 PTS 7.

    That’s all that matters tonight.

  13. Fsotc….disagree, Pardew has to do what he thinks is best for the team and not 1 players personal glory 😉

  14. I like the fact Obertan was willing to take on the defenders as we have few who can. When it came to speed he usually skinned them, but skill? A couple of useless stepovers and sometimes couldn’t beat a single defender to get through on goal, but the willingness with there and the sharpness will come in time hopefully.

  15. Thought the team played well after the first 20 mins, we seem to be getting better as our games go on. Very pleased with the display today, thought Obertan and Vuckic linked very well albeit briefly.

Thought Raylor had a good game again today and was yet again very impressed with Jonas. Overall I think it showed a solid team performance, roll on QPR!!

  16. Robert…..aye, foundations are there, just need to add to them…rather than chipping away at ’em.

  17. Overall good performance.. a little shaky in the first 20 min.
i think Best, Krul, cabaye, Orbetan, Jonas, Colo.. best of the bunch

      (Quote)

  18. What was the change, Vukic for Best? Maybe wise. I don’t know. I thought Best was holding the ball up well and causing them all kinds of problems.

Dzeko has 4 goals for City today….

      (Quote)

  19. FSOT..I didn’t say whether or not it was the right decision, just that he has to do what he thinks is right for the team and not for a players personal glory 😉

  20. yeah, I agree with that in principle. Arguably, letting the boy try for it would do good for his confidence and be good man management. But maybe at that time he sensed the midfield needed reinforcing.

Either way, a good win today and Best, Ba’s cameo, Cabaye, Colo, Saylor and Krul looking good. Jonas and Obertan on the wings were pretty strong too. Credit to Raylor again for a decent showing out of position and almost scoring.

And maybe, just maybe, this thing is gelling a little…

  21. Ben Arfa to come back and play behind Best or Ba. We don’t need another striker, Alan.

  22. ZOE @422 did i not tell you that this morning, stick with me ill keep you right 😉

dave keeps richie right, richie keeps me right, then batty comes along and stuffs up everybody simples

  23. Scott Wilson says the deal should go through tonight for Pieters.

Craig – the attendance was always going to be lower this time around. We have 4,000 away seats and Fulham only bring about 500 away from home.

Not saying that is the only reason of course, but bear in mind that Arsenal brought near on 4,000…..

      (Quote)

  24. ICE: I can’t remember you saying that. Probably we haven’t put the extra money on the offer they want. This will all go down to last day of the window won’t it?

      (Quote)

  25. There is no way we should sell Best , he is our best striker and together with Ba we could just have found a great front 2 . Krul was brilliant today and we have the best defence since Sir Bobbys Champions league Squad . The best is i think this team can grow and improve , we are not far off a top 8 side .

      (Quote)

  26. Fans Krul was to far off his line he should of stayed on the line ,but what the hell he pulled off a load of great saves .

      (Quote)

  27. FSOTC aye mate krul miles off the line header went over him 🙁 but played great one mistake him and cabye motm for me,collo normal top game

  28. Great result, not a classic game, a bit scrappy but a win is a win. Just really, really hope we get a LB and a striker before Wednesday as the squad really needs a bit of help. Four kids on the bench says it all.

But beware, after every NUFC positive it is invariably followed by a great big whack in the nuts!

  29. Just got back from the match.
Disappointed at the empty seats, but it’s got to be said the majority were platinum club tickets. There was a Decent queue for bought on the day tickets.
Bank holiday, so people away on their holidays?
I reckon back up to near 50k one the posh people get back from their la dee da summer hols.

Pardew got it all wrong at 75 mins. Taking best off when he was on a hat trick. Why he tried to shut up shop I don’t know. Not a popular decision with the crowd.
Then when smith came on I swear everyone in the ground had their heads in their hands.

      (Quote)

  30. Micky – The empty seats are definate protest against Ashley imo. The supporters are starting to feel complete apathy towards the club and the regime. The status quo just cannot continue.

As for the substitutions – why is it closing out a game when Ferguson or Wenger do it but when Pardew does it it’s a bad decision?

Oh and toonsy, Scott Wilson said the Pieters deal would be done yesterday – so that’s that out then. He cannot be that close to signing if he’s playing tonight.

Bad feeling about this last few days. 🙁

  31. jabba is in love with smith, pardew got to keep him, after all he has a shirt with smith name on back,he wont waste money, them new shirts are not cheap 😀

      (Quote)

  32. Hit man having to bring on smith should be enough to show anyone that we need more players in.

      (Quote)

  33. fk reet off micky toony, ive just seen rooney fall over is he ***** now…give the lad a chance he came on the day as sub…fkin hell supporters likes this who needs ashley 😆

      (Quote)

  34. Stauart we don’t have the players to close out the game. Im not a fan of the tactic, whoever does it. Reckon best might have got a hat trick if we’d kept going. At the very least smith wouldn’t have played.

We looked very decent in parts, but tieote was off his game a bit and although rayor and jonas is ok, they aren’t as natural as jonas and Jose, just yet.

Overall I enjoyed the game as I always do, unlike the people behind me who seemed to be in pain to be there.

The empty seats aren’t a protest, not when you see where they are. They are all sold season ticket areas.
