Game on! Nottingham Forest v Newcastle

The temporary home of the Geordies!
Welcome one and all to our fabulous ‘Game On’ article which will take us through every twist and turn of the Nottingham Forest v Newcastle Carling Cup 3rd round tie.

Firstly let me apologise for the lack of articles today. This is only the third one which is way below the precedent that we have set for ourselves. However there are some mitigating circumstances.

As some of you will be aware, Mrs Toonsy is expecting a Jnr Toonsy. It’s early days but today was the 12 week scan which, I’m informed, is kind of like the green light to start getting carried away. I’m pleased to report that everything is as it should be which is a relief. Anyway, back to the match…

As a treat I’ve decided to make the trek to Nottingham to take in the match this evening. Fortunately Nottingham Forest are selling away tickets directly to fans which is rather nicely making a mockery of the decision from our club to restrict the sales of tickets to away fans. I’m not complaining. I get to see a game without giving our club any coin as per the rules of my mini protest which I’ve mentioned a few times now.

In terms of TV streaming, as far as I’m aware there is none although there are a couple of links that have popped up. Hopefully they’ll work but I wouldn’t get my hopes up in all honesty. Experience tells me that if there is just one or two links then they’ll either be dead or showing something else entirely.

The match is being covered live on Radio 5live Sports Extra which could be an option if all else fails whilst highlights are available on BBC1 on Wednesday evening at 23:20. I have to say that the coverage of this game is shocking in all honesty, but it is what it is.

Obviously with me being at the game I won’t be able to update the team news. However I’m sure that all you’ll need to know will be found in the comments section below. In fact I’ll probably be on here having a look for the teamsheet myself such is the reliability and speed of you guys! For a bit more information though you can always try having a read of my match preview. It features injury news, team news and a few fun facts and stats for your viewing pleasure.

The match needs a winner tonight so extra time and penalties may come into play. I’m hoping we have enough about ourselves to get the job done in normal time, but then again if we have to go as far as penalties then so be it. I’ve yet to see a penalty shootout involving Newcastle live so it would be a first for me.

Last time I went to Nottingham I got into a bit of trouble for having the audacity to want to get back to my car. Silly me. I mean who would have thought that walking to where your car was parked was a reason for bizzies to have a go? Hopefully I’ll not see any of that tonight.

That is just about it. I’m off to shout myself hoarse and back the lads and when I return I’ll have a match report prepared for you with the added benefit of actually being at the match. I like it that way as you can see more than just what a TV camera shows you.

Howay the lads!

  1. Here it is! Was wondering if a game thread would come up.

This line up looks like it could be deadly tonight. Defense will need to be aware though because Abeid likes to handle the ball a bit; could lose possession in dangerous areas if not careful.

I don’t expect HBA to last too long. 60 minutes tops after the game is sewn up for Sammy to continue to terrorize!
    Howdy the Lads!!!!

  2. Well just seen the line up and although its virtually a reserve team , it looks strong for a game like this . Just goes to show we are moving in the right direction .

  3. Newcastle United (4-2-3-1): Rob Elliot; Danny Simpson, James Perch, Fabricio Coloccini, Shane Ferguson; Dan Gosling, Danny Guthrie; Sylvain Marveaux, Mehdi Abeid, Hatem Ben Arfa; Peter Lovenkrands

Substitutes: Tim Krul, Jeff Henderson, Paul Dummett, Gabriel Obertan, Sammy Ameobi, Shola Ameobi, Leon Best

  4. Army, I don’t know if there are any cameras there to stream from.

I hope the rain doesn’t get in the way of te lads trying to play the ball around on the floor

  5. Although our line up is impressive for a carling cup game, we need to be aware of forest’s threats.

Findley is starting who has bags of pace.
Mcgugan is starting also, who is essentially their star player.
Tudgay and Derbyshire can do something too, especially with Fish at centerback

  6. Agreed AndrewT, this isn’t a weak side we’re facing here. But our lads have something to prove and will be up for it I reckon

  7. There’ll always be cameras for goals and highlights. They’re even at conference games for sky so don’t get to carried away. The live broadcast to stream from is the problem.

Not getting my hopes up though it’d be a nice bonus

  8. Ice @ 15 I think they just put that on there in the hope that there will be a stream they can get mate, I dont think we will get one, which means it will be a cracking game and a good win for us.

  9. FSOTC – Because the site went down and I was at the match so couldn’t get it back up again 🙁

Apologies for that everyone. Believe me I was as pissed off as you guys 😡

  10. So how was Ben Arfa? Sound like Marveaux had a great game and Colo is the hero again.

Is Steve Harper now 3rd choice? And is he on his way out?

  11. I’ll do a detailed match report in the morning but in short….

James Perch – Man of the Match. Only Forest but nowt got past him.

Ben Arfa – WShowed flashes of brilliance before tiring. I remember one time he beat like five players and set up Lovenkrands who scuffed it to the goalkeeper.

    Elliot – Fat and ****.

Marveaux – Fantastic, Set one up, won a pen, and I can’t remember him giving the ball away.

Sammy – Was just Sammy. No fear, skill, pace……

Danny Simpson – Needs putting down. Awful. At fault for two goals 😛

Not surprised Perch had a good game. He’s not as bad as some make out and he would have relished playing his old club.

I heard Abeid was the nuts. Sounded like it on the radio anyway.

  13. Simpson needs putting down, Perch man of the match…. toonsy you had a post match victory hash pipe? 😆 😆

  16. That was a close one, but does Newcastle do it any other way? **** commentary on BBC; the commentators only seemed to get excited when Forest were attacking.

  17. Thanks for the highlights Free Scoring Smudge. I’m in the USA and couldn’t even listen to it on the radio on 5 Live as it was blocked outside the Uk. Just had to make do with the teleprinter on BBC Sport. Much appreciated mate.

  20. Thanks for the highlights, FSS!

I’ve liked the look of Marveaux from the first glimpse, and he’s living up to my hopes! And even the commentators, who clearly were clearly for Forest, couldn’t help but go into raptures over BA. Also sounds like Marv and BA really click…. what I can’t wait for is to see those two on the pitch at the same time as Cabaye… I just see them as some sort of lethal French triad or something…. thought we were definitely missing Cabaye and the way he held things together at Villa… not sure about Guthrie and Gosling, await Toonsy’s review. Surprised that Perch did well, thought from the radio that he sounded like a liability, but maybe I was just hearing what I was expecting to hear, hahaha!! sounded like Colo was doing all the work. Well credit to Perch if he did well, that’s good news indeed.

All in all another good result! Some nice bits of play, BA back with a match behind him, a good runout for the youngsters/fringe players, and no injuries! Excited for Saturday now 😀

Oh and congrats on the scan, Toonsy 😀

  21. I was fully expecting to wake up to the headlines toon lose on penalties…Great result for the toon “B” team….and no injuries either. Excellent, well done to the lads, and to Pardew, I suppose you make your own luck at the end of the day…

    Roll on Blackburn…

  23. What I love about this match is that although they didn’t make it easy for themselves, they fought until the very end and were rewarded.

We have grit, we have determination, we have spirit, we turn up for matches, we don’t need those losers who went off and left for other clubs 😀 😀 😀

  24. Too many changes in the team for my liking but it seems who ever we put out these days will battle to the very end for the cause and they get their reward in the end. Geting through to the next round is the name of the game adn they’ve done that, well done lads 😀

  25. An excellent result, defensive frailties though, with some silly mistakes at the back. I’m hoping Ben Arfa and Marv aren’t too tired to play vs Blackburn this weekend. I’m pretty sure when Marv is fully fit he’ll be a first team regular, so the sooner Pardew gives him a start, the better. Looking forward to the match report, toonsy.
I was pleasantly surprised to see the starting 11, I thought playing Lovenpants was a good idea with that midfield behind him. He usually has decent movement and makes good runs. Would’ve preferred to see Ba though. He needs playing time and a couple of goals to get his confidence up.
Seems like Pardew is going to play both Ben Arfa and Ba in similar positions, so I guess Best is going to lead the line as long as he’s scoring the goals.
