Game On! Newcastle v Swansea

Game On an St James’ Park
A rare occurrence indeed, well in terms of this season anyway, as United play their first regulation Saturday 3pm home kick-off of the season against Swansea City this afternoon.

Hopefully with that we’ll end up with another rare occurrence this afternoon, that being three points for the home side and maybe, just maybe, a decent performance to go with it.

I dare say that the performance just doesn’t matter today though. The only thing that really matters is getting three points on the board whether that be through a good display of our own or from a dodgy deflected own goal I’m not overly fussed. We just need to start getting points on the board especially after the home defeat to West Ham last week.

However we have injury problems to contend with which you can read about in my match preview if you haven’t already done so. You can also read some stats and facts, a history of the fixture, any injury news for Swansea plus some random thoughts ahead of the game itself.

The game is not being shown live here in the UK but it is being broadcast on quite a few channels overseas. If you happen to come across a decent stream then by all means leave a link to it in the ‘comments’ section below.

Team news will, as ever, be published below as and when it becomes available. There might be a small delay in it being published as I don’t finish work until 1:45pm so I’m just leaving a bit of room for manoeuvre. It all depends on how kind Brussels and Amsterdam are to me.

Howay the lads!

  1. Blip @223 , I’m inclined to agree with Dave ,I think he’s trying too hard as he gets little support when he has a run with the ball there is noone to pass to. That in itself is weird as if half the team is still back it amazes me that when Benny does inevitably lose it they are able to carve us open with a counter attack ,work that one out cause I can’t 🙄 .

  2. Just feel so fcking let down by the players and manager. Winning those 2 games would have put us in a great position after the first third of the season. Instead it’s looking like midtable for us this year.
Will be interesting to see what happens from here, in the summer the board could’ve argued “the team finished 5th last year so we don’t need to invest as we have young talent coming through” however know they don’t even have that thin leg to stand on.
Warped dream for me would be to not qualify for Europa, manage to retain the big guns for another year, buy what we need and have a pure focus on getting CL football next year.

      (Quote)

  3. The plot thickens. What does Ashley think of the brilliant plan now? No decent incoming in summer with many more games adds up to only 1 result and we are seeing it now. Pardew seems to be at a loss. Players he counted on to perform have let him down but his tactics haven’t exactly been brilliant. Teams know how to play us now even at home and we are missing too many experienced players to cope. I lay this at the feet of Llambias but obviously Ashley had to agree as well.

  4. @Geordietwo
The board were bloody stupid not to sign in the summer, but at the end of the day, these lads finished 5th last year, they should be beating Swansea and West Ham home regardless of new additions. No excuses.
Blaming the board for these defeats takes the flak away from the manager, coaching staff and players, and they’ve let us down just as much as the board this season imo.

  5. Last week I said I didn’t think we had been as bad as some thought. No chance of me saying that this week. We were abysmal and Swansea were a joy to watch. As Axel has already said, “Pass and move.” Trouble is we can’t pass and we don’t move. We are slow at the back. By the time we decide what to do with the ball the opposition are back in numbers. The combination of Simpson and Willo at the back is shocking. Neither is good on the ball which weakens the right side. No point in being a good defender is all you do is pass it to the other side. We also have to stop punting hopeful balls into the box – that’s what you expect in the Conference. I still think we have the players to do better.

      (Quote)

  6. I was on here the other day saying how Pablo Hernandez has been Swansea’s best player and it would be telling on how we dealt with him….Well, we didn’t deal with him at all.

In fact, we didn’t even deal with Michu, which is absolutely criminal considering the rave reviews he’s had from the press. This is very worrying in my opinion. Last season we seemed tactically prepared for almost every game. This season we seem the exact opposite. Just what is going on?!

We played some good stuff at times today, but we lack so much quality in the final third. We either make the wrong decision, or the right one and execute it poorly. We look like a team destined for a 12th place finish and unless we sign a couple in Jan I think that’s where we will probably finish.

    Positives:

Santon, Ben Arfa, and Anita performances. Tiote had a solid game, but he should never have left Michu to run into the box unchallendged and score. That’s HIS man!

    Negatives:

    The result!
Shane Ferguson is not up to it yet. Needs to go out on loan.
Both our CB’s are **** poor without Colo.
Lack of quality and composure in the final third.

Another week wasted. Pardew needs to sort this out and now as the fans are just beginning to turn a bit (Ridiculous, but true).

      (Quote)

  7. Solanostrumpet I agree with you in many ways but I have been saying all along that this “plan” couldn’t work. Not once we exceeded expectations and got into Europe and added so many games to the schedule. Having Llambias as MD is like having an anchor around the club’s neck. He doesn’t have a clue, never has. We are quite a weak side without Colo, Jonas, and several injuries to young players. I agree the team has looked poor on many occassions but if we had spent properly we would have started the season with Debuchy and Douglas in the side and things would have likely been very different. This is going to continue to happen to us until Llambias is out.

      (Quote)

  8. Howay, cheer up you lot FFS. Not everything’s bad. At least Simmo’s getting his tactics right and getting a decent leg over!

      (Quote)

  9. Thing is all fans are acutely aware this was our month to kick on given the teams we face and to see points dropped in such a poor way is infuriating. Next month is gonna be a nightmare ,if we can’t cope with Novembers teams we are in for a torrid time in the run up to xmas.

      (Quote)

  10. No doubt we would have been better with Debuchy and Douglas in the side but the way we are playing is down to the coaching staff and not Llambias, unless he is instructing them to take long hopeful punts whenever possible.

      (Quote)

  11. What’s going on at SJP? Sloppy and amateurish from top to bottom! How can there be no soap in the soap dispensers and no paper towels before KO FFS? Its not like there’s been a week long party in the 1892 club, finishing in the early hours of this morning. And how can we blame the Senegalese FA? Did we not seek an acknowledgement of receipt of our notification? Complacency. Just like Pards’ performance and his post match analysis.

      (Quote)

  12. @Groucho
Yeah that’s my thinking. Signings will have undoubtedly helped in some aspects, but things like Cisse not scoring and not working on a formation over the summer to utilise our purples has nothing to do with the board.
Bloody hate West Brom, they’re the new “us”.
“Clueless Chris” level on points with us, not so clueless eh.

      (Quote)

  13. Good points Groucho but does this suggest Pardew isn’t quite the genius some thought he was based on the 2 manager of the year awards last season? I was never convinced he was that fantastic, just a fairly decent manager whose team over-performed for 1 season. There are better managers out there but in the end it won’t matter because we won’t spend to build a competitive team where certain players aren’t automatically assured of a starting place in the team. We can’t afford to sit under-performers because we have very little on the bench. Willo is in the side because he is cheap, simple as that. Simpson is extremely average yet we won’t pay for a better replacement. God knows what has happened to Cisse this season but nobody else does. A complete shambles with an owner who refuses to accept part of the blame and make changes.

  14. I’ve been banging on about Anita being “Little Boy Lost” for weeks. He was truly dreadful today. How did Pards not see it?

Too many midfielders failed to track back, and Swansea couldn’t believe how easy it was. The writing was on the wall early doors, and “if” Pards read it, aye “if”, he did nowt about it.

Sammy was guilty of tracking back in part and then just giving up FFS. Ferguson is offering nowt.

I wouldn’t care, but long after the damage was done, and Anita’s little legs had gone, Pards kept him on and put him to left back, where he was even worse. Pards was sleepwalking.

      (Quote)

  15. “I’ve been banging on about Anita being “Little Boy Lost” for weeks. He was truly dreadful today. How did Pards not see it?”

He wasn’t at all dreadful today. He was just mediocre. Didn’t do anything wrong, nor anything outstanding.

      (Quote)

  16. Both Tiote and Anita were steady today and nothing more or less. Tiote is slightly more open to criticism because of how easily Michu scored his goal, but that’s about it. Central midfield wasn’t the main problem today.

      (Quote)

  17. I notice Troy is saying it’s all down to losing the cheque book in the summer. How much did Swansea’s squad cost as against ours? Was it a mistake to cash in on Routledge?

      (Quote)

  18. This was destined to happen as we over-performed last season. But now we are under-performing, dealing with injuries and suspensions to key players and having our eyes opened by other teams’ superior tactics. Talk about a witches brew. I’m not sure where this will take us this season but the pressure will be on in the January window and no more excuses accepted Derek. Either improve the side or watch it flounder. Pardew must be worried sick about losing Ba with Cisse completely out of sorts. And to be honest we have nothing in reserve. Campbell is too young and injured, Xisco and Ranger are lost causes and why did we let Best go with no incoming? This speaks to the complete arrogance of a fool called Llambias.

  19. The Kid. I’m not trying to be funny. You’re entitled to your opinion and all that, but did you watch it on TV or listen to it on the radio or something? Have you been on the sauce? I’d be interested to hear your stats on it. If they’re in Anita’s favour, I would throw your stats away. Shocking! Absolutely shocking!

I scanned a few of the comments and found myself agreeing with HBA39 again. It’s becoming a habit.

  20. West Ham last week and Swansea today have worked us out. When Krul has the ball man mark everybody but Simpson and Williamson have the two spare packed in the midfield to win the second ball. The opposition know they can let dumb and dumber have as much ball as they like cause the end result is going to be a chip dink by Simpson or a hoof by Williamson. It is so depressing to watch and so predictable.
Sorry to be negative but I said he was poor last week but this week Williamson sunk to new depths. Please someone say if they think if we were to put him up for sale how many other PL clubs would actually want to buy him

  21. We’re lacking a Tony Cottee/Alan Shoulder type goal poacher. I haven’t seen much of Campbell, but I hope he’s in that mould.

  22. B&B

Funny you should say that, because I am yet to look at the stats. However, I did watch the game on tv(laptop), but let me guess, you were there and all of his mistakes etc were only visible live?… 🙄

I have also scanned a few sites/publications and none agree with you. Not one…In fact, all have agreed with me. Steady and nothing more.

I would be interested to know exactly what he did that was so bad?

There’s no getting away from it, Anita was weak. Absolutely weak.
Fergie is not good enough. Championship at best.
Sammi is better on the wing than as a striker though still has a hell of alot to prove for me.
Marveaux only got a brief opportunity but so far his toon career has been a flop.

This is now the big test for Pards. It’s easy keeping players happy when things are going well but if they aren’t, humans are all the same, they will all play the blame game.

Oh I forgot to mention, Willo & Saylor are simply **** together. The defence is so unorganised without Colo.

    Have I missed anyone?

      (Quote)

  24. No premier clubs would make an offer Toby @245. It has been obvious for a long while that Willo is simply a tall body meant to handle high balls for Colo so that he can deal with the rest. Without Colo’s brain back there we are lost. Willo adds nothing going forward and can’t make a pass under pressure to save his life. A bargain basement stand-in, as simple as that. I don’t want to hear any more bragging about Willo from Pardew, or it will make me suspect Pardew’s football brain even further.

      (Quote)

  25. B&B

I have just had a look at the stats and it seems to me Vurnon’s biggest flaw today was his lack of defensive contribution. He didn’t make any interceptions or clearances. Whilst this is disappointing, it could also be linked to the fact Swansea spent most of the game attacking on the counter via the flanks. Also, surely that was Tiote’s role today? Unless Pardew wanted to holding players?

Anita was only dispossessed once today and made three key passes(chances created), which was joint second best in the entire team! (Ben Arfa was top with 8 key passes)

So again, I’m not sure what he did that made him so terrible today?…

      (Quote)

  26. B&B

By the way, you can dismiss the stats all you like, but I can guarantee you that’s what the manager will be using…

  27. The Kid. You cannot tell me you can give a decent assessment of a player’s performance by watching on a laptop. No, you need the excellent view from a great seat in the stand like I’ve got.

I hope they analyse it on MOTD. Gary Neville on a Monday night would have Anita constantly circled because our midfield, Anita in particular, allowed them the freedom of the park in the last third. Anita’s legs were so far gone in the last half hour, Neville would be drawing legs on him. It was absolutely criminal.

I’m missing Tulisa here man! .

If they dont start signing people soon and i mean mote than 1 or 1 cheapies – all of the past 2 seasons will have been for nothing and we’ll return to mid table dross.

Onwards and upwards. 4-3-3 Would be nice in the next game please pards!!!!!

      (Quote)

  31. The Kid @ 251 The manager wants to look at himself before he looks at the stats. There’s plenty of things he needs to sort out about his own performance. What can the stats tell us about that?

If the manager looks at the stats like you say he does, I can’t believe he continues to allow us to take short corners. How often do they come off FFS? You have a dead ball to get in the box, knock it short, get closed down and do well to get a throw in.

Besides, you know what they say, “Lies, damned lies, and statistics”.

      (Quote)

  32. The Kid you say “not many agree with you outside of this website”. I’m not having that unless and until you let me have the full stats on that!

  35. @ B&B
On the point of corners. Have you ever seen a team so clueless from set pieces or so bad at them? The majority of our corners that are not taken short (which i agree do not work very often) hit the first man and the others fly strait over the top. Free kicks are little better. Before someone mentions it Raylor was no better either.

I must say, I prefer Henry Clay’s “Statistics are no substitute for judgment.”, which I actually agree with.

However, to be completely dismissive of statistics is just as naive as solely relying on them. I have a view after watching the game and the stats seem to back them up for the most part – This is enough for me today.

  40. B&B@264 ,What were the guys in the stands saying ,I couldn’t get over how very quiet the fans were,I only really heard singing once or twice .It was like they was stunned into silence and we are normally so vocal. 😉

      (Quote)

  41. Re Anita – I’m prepared to give him time coz if De Boer rates him and he was so key to Ajax there must be some good things to come. Plus, life is about learning lessons and I learned mine last season by judging Santon – I got that wrong so I hold out hope for Anita.

Were Swansea 11 better players than us today, not in my opinion – but what they were was far better organized. I understand people saying about signings and lack of spending, and I agree, I really do. But, there are lesser quality teams in this league playing far better football than we are – passing, set pieces, formations all these things are down to the manager and coaching staff.
Fucking forget about Thursday night – 3 points against Saints is far more important IMO, so spend the week going back to basics, passing and set pieces, lets at least get that right.
At no stage today did I think we were going to win that game or that we ever really worried Swansea other than isolated attacks. That’s dog **** and Pardew needs to come out and be honest after the games and stop the stupid excuses.

      (Quote)

  42. Just noticed we’re on the same points as Norwich now, will Pards be labelled clueless when he leaves us I wonder? 😕

      (Quote)

  43. From the stand I can see the whole game. When the TV camera shows a player kicking a ball and follows the flght of the ball, from the stand, I can be watching that and everything else that’s happening or not happening; where players are and where they should be. The stats should show that I can see 100% of the game and that a TV camera will show less than 50% of the game to the man in the armchair. For example, one of the things that gets me about football is that defenders stand doing nowt when midfielders or forwards have the ball. A number of times today, for example, we were happy to sit four defenders against one or two forwards whilst at the same time we were short in supporting Ba. A spare defender should use inititiative and support the midfield, allowing a midfielder to get forward and support the attack. Its like a basic chess principle: deploy all your pieces to the maximum at all times; in chess you get your big pieces out from the back. You can’t see any of this on TV.

I think you’re kidding yourself about Anita.

I went to the match and I witnessed his total kakness.

You say it wasn’t noticed by those outside the ground. Well when I listened to Radio Newcastle on the way back, John Anderson was saying the same thing without saying the word kak.

  45. Anitas problem is the speed of the prem.
He is used to having time and space and time to look up and pick a nice pass. He aint never gonna get that in Prem football. So he either needs to pull up his sox or call it a day.
Of course it is going to take time for him to adapt, and to be fair to him, we shouldn’t expect too much too soon. But of course, we do, as we have such a small weak squad that he cant be integrayed slowly, but chucked in at the deep end. Hopefully, there is more to come from him, but only time will tell.
Willo stank the place out this afternoon. But once again, we have no one to replace him with. Fucking utter shambolic joke.
Tiote was clearly **** scared of getting another booking, and was a shadow of what he can be.
We are trying to integrate younguns into the prem, who clearly need a season or two in the lower leagues, playing regularly and learning their craft. Not a chance are any of them ready.
Our reserve players are being let down imo by our **** poor coaching staff.
Dissappointed with Ba’s efforts today, I expected a great deal more.
I knew when I seen Shola coming on for the 2nd half, we would lose.
Another delicious serving of tripe from ALL.

  50. It’ll be interesting with Anita….I’m still pretty hopeful that he’ll “make it” with us and whatever, but if he doesn’t does that mean Carr will also get criticism? Because it can’t entirely be down to the coaching staff..

    Will nothing be sacred! 😆

  51. B&B –
That may be a fair point when judging defenders/strikers, but I would argue that the midfielders are almost always in view due to their location on the pitch. I don’t buy this “I was at the game argument”, sorry.

    Beardsley –
I take the point about the Prem being too fast for Anita and it’s something I have said in the past, but I don’t see how this can be put to him today?

He was dispossessed just once and had a 85%+ passing accuracy, so at what point was the lack of time on the ball a problem for him?

    Troy –
I keep reading on here about Anita being poor, but I am yet to be told why? If you can do this I will match it to the stats e.g. was weak in the challenge – I will check the no. of attempted challenges and their success rate etc.

Normally, when people don’t go into detail it’s because they don’t want to expose the cracks in their argument…

We look absolutely cluelesss and thats a big worry for me.
WTF is happening during the training sessions? because it clearly isnt making any difference.

  55. B&B/The Kid – if I can make a point re your conversation. B&B – I’d imagine it defends on where you’re sat in the stand – if your sat down the front behind the goal then your line of vision would be great. However, if you are sat in an elevated part of the Stadium then yes mate, your peripheral vision would without doubt pick up more that someone who is watching televised images. For example, I’m sat watching my TV and whilst I can see the whole screen, I can also see half of my living room at the same time. If your up high looking down, you’re going to see the whole or most of the pitch.
In terms of the action, televised is what you want for the action, in terms of being able to rate a teams/players performance you have to be at the game – hence why you see managers in the stands watching their next opponents rather than watching live feeds or whatever.

      (Quote)

  56. …Anyway, changing the subject, what the hell is going on down at QPR?!

I can’t believe those players are playing so badly. Mark Hughes is overrated and always has been, but their squad should be good enough to at least scrape the odd win despite Hughes’ tactical inability.

Also, Tony Fernandes tweet this earlier:

“I feel gutted. I have put my heart and soul into this with my other shareholders and done all we can to give support to players and all management. I can only apologise to the QPR fans. We keep fighting.”

****ing hell, sounds as if they are as good as relegated already!

      (Quote)

  57. The Kid @ 281. You’ve got to be joking when you say the midfielders are almost always in view on TV! That’s laughable. Do the stats.

You say, “He was dispossessed just once and had a 85%+ passing accuracy, so at what point was the lack of time on the ball a problem for him?” That could mean he touched the ball only a few times, and managed to lay off some simple, safe passes! Those stats prove nowt.

I agree “Normally, when people don’t go into detail it’s because they don’t want to expose the cracks in their argument…” So tell me, with stats if you want, but certainly with logical argument, about how you can judge a game and an individual’s performance from a laptop anywhere near as well as you can when you’re at the game and can see everything 100% of the time.

It was great to see what every player was like off the ball and I came away seeing certain players in a different light. Jonas in particular impressed me ,yes he’s lost pace but by christ he works his **** off. A few others could take a leaf out his book.

  60. Typically what happens on tv is we’ve won a throw near their box, the camera gets a close up on the manager’s expression, we return to the play, and the next thing we see is their defender hoofing it clear. The Kid, did Pards pull many good faces today? They’re the bits I miss because I’m watching the game.

  61. ‘The Kid @ 281. You’ve got to be joking when you say the midfielders are almost always in view on TV! That’s laughable. Do the stats.” Two questions – Why is it laughable? and what stats would these be?

“You say, “He was dispossessed just once and had a 85%+ passing accuracy, so at what point was the lack of time on the ball a problem for him?” That could mean he touched the ball only a few times, and managed to lay off some simple, safe passes! Those stats prove nowt.”

RE number of touches: I can get the amount of touches he had if that helps clear this one up.(38, which isn’t great, but understandable considering 1. Tiote seems to be the player chosen to retrieve the ball from the CB’s when we play out from the back and 2. most of the time our defenders choose to bypass the midfield completely and aim for Ameobi/Ba/Cisse)

RE simple passes: It seems you are misguided as to the type of player Anita is if this is something you plan to criticise him for. Even at Ajax Anita was a player who didn’t do too much adventurous, but was reliable when it came to maintaining possession and keeping the ball moving. This is what he does. Arteta does something similar at Arsenal. Just keeps things moving. The difference is, Arteta sees a lot of ball due to Arsenal actually utilising their midfield area. We seem to completely bypass this area and instead opt to go from back to front (hence Anita’s low number of touches above)

“I agree “Normally, when people don’t go into detail it’s because they don’t want to expose the cracks in their argument…” So tell me, with stats if you want, but certainly with logical argument, about how you can judge a game and an individual’s performance from a laptop anywhere near as well as you can when you’re at the game and can see everything 100% of the time.”

Eh? At what point did I say TV allows you to see everything 100% of the time?…My argument is that the difference is not as great as you would have me believe due to midfielders playing in the central area of the pitch and their general proximity to the ball. My stance comes from experiencing games both live and televised.

  62. Kim @ 291 Dead right. You’re not watching a football match when you’re at home or in the pub. You’re watching snippets of a football match, long views, close ups, bits of the field, but never the whole of the field. On tv you’re following the ball all the time, unless the director is bringing you facials. However, the game is as much about what is happening off the ball. Quite often, for example, when our winger is carrying the ball for six or seven seconds down the line, I’m watching the defence and seeing where they are and thinking about where they should be to support the attack or pick up the pieces if it breaks down.

  63. Stats 😯 I seen stats saying how good Willo’s pass rate was but when he passes it to Krul a dozen or more times a game they should be good, but them stats don’t tell the story of how many times his completed passes gets us into trouble because Krul is being closed down when he passes it to him, because Willo doesn’t seem to have any peripheral vision 😀 maybe he should cut his hair and it wouldn’t be getting in his eyes 😆

  64. B&B – ill repeat my previous point. If watching a match on a television/laptop or whatever – why do opposition managers and England managers choose to travel to grounds?! – I think you’re right as well mate.

Watching MOTD – Ade tackle was seriously bad and Walcott was fantastic again today like – best England CF by far at the mo for me like

  65. For me Willo is a big problem for the team. He just cannot play football. We cannot start a good action if the ball goes in his feet. I dont know how you cannot handle a simple pass when you are a pro. After that for me this year we have not central midfield, who can construct an action made a good pass, win duals. We seem to be outplayed by every team. We loose all second balls, no way to put some pressure in the team.
And to finish 2 strikers just doesnt suit us. When we have 2 strikers we just hoof the ball. I think we really must add someone in the middle and keep only Ba as a striker.
For me we need a guy like Marveaux just because he can control a ball under pressure and make a pass ( that seems basic but most of our players cannot do that). He can improve our set play. Even if he doesnt have the energy of Sammy or Fergie for me he is far superior to these youngers.
Maybe Benny tries too much but i can easily understand why, when he sees what happens when he gives the ball to Simpson or someone else, just a long ball. So he prefers to loose the ball himself. And i dont know the stats but i think the guy runs 10 km in the first half, He was dead at the end.

  66. At what point did I say you said tv allows you to see everything 100% of the time? I said being at the match allows you to do that. I’m watching MOTD now as I write, and you see very, very little of the game (ignoring the fact that they are highlights). In fact, you get no fair reflection. Your stats, which you love to quote, would be absolutely not worth the paper they are written on if they were compiled by someone watching the game on tv. If you watch on tv, you need the stats to give you a much better idea. However, the tv and stats are nowhere near as telling as watching the whole game for yourself. I go to the game, watch the tv and look at the stats.

The kid, how many football matches do you watch live? I watch four or five games at a weekend alone, not including NUFC at SJP in EPL and Europa. I also have a good diet of tv coverage.
