Should Coloccini walk straight back into the team?

Should Colo be called upon straight away?
Should Colo be called upon straight away?
Fabricio Coloccini is closing in on a return to first-team action, according to Alan Pardew.

Whilst Colo is yet to resume full physical training, he has been doing fitness work for a week or so and will be tested this week to see if he is ready to return in any of our final four league games of the season.

This poses an interesting problem for our manager. What do you do if he is fit enough to return? Do you put him straight back into the team given the fact that he is our captain and is arguably our best defender on his day? Or do you stick with the Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Steven Taylor partnership which, aside from a couple of blips, has generally been fine and seems to be getting better?

The issue is clouded even more with the uncertainty surrounding the future of Coloccini who may well be off in the summer anyway. So do you then focus on the shorter term aim of staying up by including a player who hasn’t played since the 4-2 win over Southampton in February or do you continue with what is likely to be our first-choice defensive partnership next season, barring any new central defensive recruits in the summer of course.

I really don’t know. If Colo had been in the same kind of form he was in last season then these questions would have easier answers and Colo would walk straight back into the team for me.

But it’s not that simple. Colo hasn’t been great this season. He’s shown flashes of what he can do such as his performance away at Sunderland but, much like the rest of the squad, he’s failed to hit the heights of last season consistently enough this term.

I honestly can’t make my mind up but I think a lot of that is to do with the nonsense in January which is playing on my mind a bit.

So, lacking in match fitness, would you usher Colo straight back into the team in the hope that he can hit the ground running? Or do you stick with Yanga-Mbiwa and Taylor at the heart of defence?

Stick or twist?

  1. It looks like Troys hook has caught 3 snappers. 😛

    That’s one thing that hasn’t changed. 😛

  2. See that Yven Moyo kid we have in our youth system is being released, shame as I thought he was supposed to be one that could make the step up. When I saw the headline I was hoping it was Amafilitano that was being released as he’s 23/24 and has done eff all.

  4. Munich – I was a Ryton Compa mate. My parents stopped me going to Blaydon Comp coz they thought Ryton was a better school.
Spent alot of my time in Newburn though working at the Leisure Centre when I left school which was some of the best years of my life man.

  5. Sharpy – you’ll probably seen Troy and myself hundreds of times – played 5 aside there for years – Troy will have been the one crying in the bogs

Duncan was in the year beneath me at school ( decades ago!)

  6. Well must say it’s nice to see no fighting on here for a change 😆
Stardy I thought everyone was beneath you 😕 right what ban do you’s think the beaver will get ? I heard he has admitted it but will appeal if he gets more than the 3 game ban which surely make him free to play against us ? am I right

  7. Stardust – they were the best years of my life mate, honestly loved it. I reckon it would have been around ’97 – ’99 (ish), worked between there and Eldon Sq and had a blast!. Don’t know how well you knew those how worked there but Alan Dalgarno was a big mate of mine at the time and loved working with Scottish Rob and Judo Joe.
I made next to nowt but as a 17yr old still living at home it earn enough for my beer money and it was great fun. Keep taking the boy down there when I’m back over and he loves the place too.
Sorry for the trip down my memory lane but it was a good time n place for me like 😉

  8. Stardust – I worked with Duncan at Eldon Sq. He was and probably still is a top fella. Worked alot with the lad he shared a house with at the time, a lad called Ian Murray who was a top bloke as well. Honestly they were some of the best years of my life and met some of the best people I’ve ever know during those 3-4yrs of my life like.

  9. Ha! ” Stardy, I thought everyone was beneath you” 😛

Sharpy, my kids go to Ryton comp & juniors and Stardust went to Blaydon comp! 😛

Dave – the beaver must get at least a 10 game ban.

  10. Now that’s everything has been sorted and there’s no more fighting…

Can anyone tell me where the Carroll money has gone? 😆 😀

  11. STARDUST what ever happened to your house building job you were doing done now or not?
SHARPY,newburn in the 90s know it well as MM would too,now i know where your rough edges come from 😀
i see toon are going to bring a new coach in next yr,cannot see how it will change things if pardew says we are playing the way he wants what will change

  12. Dave – every now and then I like mixing with commoners – makes me realise how special I am 😆

Sharpy – Duncan and I were the Hookergate massive – though each being beneath 5 foot made it more of a miniature. Has always been a top lad.

Re the Beaver – 3 games is run of the mill and therefore unacceptable. Somewhere between 6-10 would suffice – nearer 6 as they admitted it and apologised immediately – cant stand him or the Dippers.

      (Quote)

  13. Troy I was thinking 8 games, but as I said he said he would appeal anything over 3 so am I right that if he appeals it he will be free to play against us 😕

  14. Ice – cheers – moved in a year and a half ago – still stuff to do though – weather didn’t help last year though – a lot of finishing details outside ( like floors, walls and roof 😆 ) to do but it stands well.

Even put in an anti Troy deterrent on it ( it was a handwritten joke about Troy on the door – he saw it once and ran off bubbling looking for a big ) 😆

      (Quote)

  15. Troy – I’ve not been along that way for a while but Ryton was a good school at the time, but most of my mates went to Blaydon and their sports facilities were the best in the area at the time.
Ryton had canny sports facilities too and it’s rugby and football teams were pretty dominate between ’90 and ’95 😛 😉
It was a good school Ryton though and was probably better equipped to deal with my dyslexia and still saw most of my buddies outside of school time so it wasn’t as bad as I thought at the time 😀

      (Quote)

  16. Ice
Pardew’s style of play will work if he brings back a striker like Carroll and a big defensive midfielder in place of Tiote.

They will work as far as to get us in the top half, maybe 8th is luck goes our way. But eventually the technically gifted players will get fed up and want out.

    As for Suarez
He got a seven match ban in Holland for the same offense. Considering that it is a repeat offense he should be getting a hefty fine and a 10 match ban for me.
    The guy is an idiot.

  17. The Dippers make me sick – how dare they Pre-announce they will appeal everything over 3. They did the right thing by admitting it and apologising so now sit back and take your medicine – and lobby in private for a smaller sentence. The Dippers have a sense of entitlement that makes me sick – they’re an odious club as vile as their surroundings

  18. Stardy, Troy needs to ask himself the question “why do I need to reinvent myself” not come on here braggng about how he reinvents himself 🙂 🙂 🙂

  19. Aussie – despite his shows of bravado – Troys a pretty week snivelling little twerp – many times over the years he ends up in tears when folks have a go back – god knows how many times I have had him bleating on drunk on the phone crying “they don’t understand” 😆

  20. Ice – have you been down there recently mate? They’ve really spent money on doing the leisure centre and riverside up. The boy and pup love it down there like and the Keelman pub is really nice down there as well. Like I say, great times for me back then.

  25. I am staggered we’re so high in that table.

Any league who’s competition is over by April is a joke. How many teams win our league?

The rich get richer and the poorer get poorer. Making it even harder for clubs to compete now with these fair play laws. What chance anyone now..?

      (Quote)

  26. Dave ,I don’t think he can play against us even if he appeals as he accepts he’s done wrong so will serve 3 games anyway ,he’s appealing anything more than 3 ,so I ‘m pretty sure it takes immediate effect on the 3 games.

      (Quote)

  27. KIM yes it is better he is missing, but imo we should worry how “we”play not the other team with or without there best players 😉

      (Quote)

  28. Stu@253-but to be fair, the Bundesliga was over ages ago as well. Hopefully the german league will have some other teams that can compete, but it does look like Bayern are on their way to a monopoly..

can’t wait til SAF buggers off like, quality manager or not..

      (Quote)

  29. Newkie ,Agree it will be nice to see some real competition for the title after he goes . Who ever comes in to manage Manure there is bound to be a period of adjustment. I blame Sir Bobby as he talked SAF out of his decision to retire according to Fergie . 🙄

  30. The only other relegation candidates to face Liverpool are QPR last day of the season . Still think they have plenty of goal threat Suarez or no Suarez , Stevie G likes scoring against us too 🙄 . All the same this is a massive bonus which Pards needs to take advantage of especially with us being the home team.

      (Quote)

  31. So what is the crack re Suarez and appealing the ban. Is it possible? Anyone know the bloody rules?

Welcome back Troy. The roof running sounds right up your cape!

      (Quote)

  32. So the BBC answers my question:

An FA statement read: “A three-person independent regulatory commission today upheld the FA’s claim that a suspension of three matches was clearly insufficient and the player will serve a further seven first-team matches in addition to the standard three. The suspension begins with immediate effect.
“The Liverpool forward had accepted a charge of violent conduct but had denied the FA’s claim that the standard three-match sanction was insufficient for the offence.
“The incident was not seen by the match officials and has therefore been retrospectively reviewed.
“Suarez has until midday on Friday 26 April to appeal [against] the additional suspension, above the standard three matches.”

      (Quote)

  33. Georgio ,Sky ticker tape , Suarez will miss the next 3 matches and has untill midday friday to appeal the additional 7 game ban .

So yeah he misses our game.

  34. Interesting news in the Newcastle Journal today, that manager Alan Pardew will add to his backroom staff in the summer, and will bring in another coach.

unless its topped by B&B in the next few days.. huffy little girls these bro’s

  36. I read that Troy – personally I think we need a new head coach. Pardew’s tactical nous is zero. He was a thick clogger as a player and he still is.

      (Quote)

  37. Ice – that article pretty much sums it all up like doesn’t it mate?!.

I have to admit this is the first time the FA have surprised me in a good way. I suggested 10 game ban the other night and I’m pleased to see that’s what he got. I hope Liverpool and Suarez take it on the chin and accept that it’s justified punishment for trying to BITE someone FFS

      (Quote)

  38. Pardew is 2nd div fodder. sack him now! he’s forever saying.. we’ll take a look at that during the week… we’ll have to practice that in training.. its a bit late now to be practicing! the seasons owa. get him out and get big Ron in..

      (Quote)

  39. The more **** Pardew comes out with the more embarrassing it gets for him. He should resign at the end of the season to at least come out of the whole thing with a bit of credibility and maybe get a decent job in the championship (his level).

    He truly is clueless.

  41. i was hoping for a 6mth ban for the cheating, racist, repeating offences but then again ime a soft touch

      (Quote)

  42. Okay my issue with the Suarez ban:
Length seems about right I think.
However because of the daft “if the ref takes action/sees the incident the FA can’t take action” rule – if the referee had seen it he would have just got one game.
That means that in future any player that stamps, spits or whatever else in the heat of the moment should just own up to it at the time, then they would get sent off and only face a maximum 3 game ban.
    Flaws.

      (Quote)

  43. Kim@260-Imo SAF’s only redeeming moment/feature was his tribute to Bobby, if it wasn’t for that I’d hate him with a passion.

As it is, I only hate him with enthusiasm 😀

      (Quote)

  44. Kim@267-someone said yesterday Pardew mentioned in the summer bringing in another coach back then, but obviously nothing happened. Can we really blame him for that when Ashley pulls the strings?

I daresay there was heavy pressure for him to promote from within-i.e Stone and bring back Carver-it gave some popular support from the fans when we were all still raging about Sports direct . Whether he actually wanted them or knew how they worked is a different matter…

      (Quote)

  45. Liverpool say they are shocked and disappointed with the punishment. That’s a PR mistake.

They would have been better off accepting it and saying nothing.

What did they really expect ? He should feel lucky Ivanovic hasn’t reported him to the police for assault.

      (Quote)

  46. Troy-aye, they’re a bunch of c*nts there. To be fair to the supporters though, most seem to think the club should have just accepted it and kept shtum anyway.

      (Quote)

  47. Troy – Liverpool need to play this one alittle bit more wisely IMO. I forgot til I saw it again on the BBC website about Suarez ‘troubles’ but they sent the whole team out to warm up with Suarez t-shirts on during his racism accusations with Evra.
There’s a fine line between offering support to the player and looking like you condone what he’s done IMO.

      (Quote)

  48. I think the punishment fits the crime. You’re spot on Sharpy @284. The club should be coming down hard on him to show that type of behaviour is absolutely unnacceptable. Suarez can lay low until next season but he will need to be watched closely when he comes back. His diving makes me sick too. Newkie @280 I seem to remember that as well mate. Surely they could have used a coach for the attack at least as far as I can tell. Icedog @256 I read the Luke Edwards article as well mate. Yes I think there’s a lot of truth in it and he has come to the same conclusion as many of us on here. Pardew probably has until November next season to prove he is the right man for the job. He has a real headache with the attack as far as I can see. How to get more out of Cisse, keep Ben Arfa happy and convince Ashley to go after another top quality striker. Those are his major tasks for the summer and next season as far as the attack is concerned.

      (Quote)

  49. G2-Aye, didn’t it cost us like 6mil to get shot of fat sam and his crew? Most managers (and any good ones) will only work if they can bring their own mob in. Ashley remembers the payout and clearly isn’t willing to go through that again, so he goes for a manager who will work for anything/with anyone (Pards) and hopes for the best. Can people really see Laurent Blanc coming in and NOT wanting to bring his own crew in?…

      (Quote)

  50. Bobby Moncur is stating in the chronicle that it would be ridiculous to sack Pardew. He reckons he should be given the opportunity to sort the issues out in pre season and give it a go next season

    Got to agree with him.

      (Quote)

  51. Woooohooooooo more German Power Play !!!

Dortmund 1 Real Madrid 0 🙂 Man is Lewandowski some player 🙂

  52. Santii, Dortmund fans are mental, they create such a brilliant atmosphere and are allowed to stand, sing, chant and enjoy the game. Typical of all German games to be honest.

Gundogan…man what a player… Dortmund have too many jack-in-the-box players for Madrid, and man what a high tempo they play at 🙂 Love it !!
