Big news emerged yesterday afternoon, with out of the blue reports confirming that Borussia Dortmund’s Mikel Merino was all set for a move to Newcastle United – and today we’ve found some impressive footage of the midfielder him in action.
To reiterate, the latest on Merino’s proposed move to NUFC is that we ‘hope’ to announce his signing in the next 24 hours (according to The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder), with his arrival set to be a loan deal with an obligation to buy (for a £6m release clause by all accounts).
Without further ado, here’s some rather impressive clips of the 21-year old defensive midfielder in action for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga and Spain U-21’s:

It may be highlights – which don’t often show the full picture – but for a player who has not long turned 21, we were mightily impressed by what we saw.
Clean tackles, crisp passing and some impressive runs with the ball. At 6ft 2′ he looks well built and athletic, appearing to have a good mix of brain and braun if these highlights are anything to go by.
It looks like Rafa may have worked his magic with this one. At £6m, Merino looks a steal in this day and age.
If only he had a right foot………
