Newcastle United have today announced the FUN88 player of the month for August, with Spanish sensation Mikel Merino getting 45% of fans vote.
The 21-year beat off competition from fellow nominees Christian Atsu and Ciaran Clark, having made an particularly impressive start to his Newcastle career after arriving from Borussia Dortmund on a season-long loan deal earlier this summer.
Whilst the early season form of Christian Atsu would have made him a worthy winner, it’s fair to say Merino deserves this given how well he’s settled into life in the Premier League.

He ran the show against West Ham, winning the midfield battle against seasoned campaigners such as Mark Noble, and has showed a touch of class and real elegance in his play in each of his outings so far.
Merino will be presented with his trophy on the St. James’ Park pitch before Saturday’s game against Stoke City.
