NUFC now ‘interested’ in deal to sign Dutch international – Report

According to The Times’ Gary Jacob, Newcastle are now ‘among the clubs interested’ in a deal to sign Crystal Palace’s versatile defender Jairo Riedewald.

The 21-year old signed for Palace just last summer, arriving from Ajax for £8m but only featuring on 15 occasions in all competitions on his debut season in England.

Whether this one will have some truth in it or be another link that’s swiftly rejected remains to be seen, however his versatility (can play at centre-back, left-back or as a defensive midfielder) could be seen as an invaluable trait to Rafa Benitez – with us having little over 48 hours to find cover in two of those three areas.

Here’s a snippet from The Times’ transfer piece today:

‘Newcastle United are among the clubs interested in Crystal Palace’s Jairo Riedewald after the 21-year-old, who can play in defence or midfield, turned down a move to Swansea City because he did not want to play in the Championship.

‘Riedewald was part of a proposed swap deal, with Jordan Ayew moving in the opposite direction. He started only four league games for Palace last season.’

A handy signing for Newcastle or one you’d steer clear of after his stuttering start to life in England?

Here’s him in action:
