Another day, another update on the Anthony Gordon saga – only this time it sounds like Newcastle are threatening to walk away from a deal.
As revealed by The Telegraph just moments ago, Everton must lower their £60m significantly if the winger is to sign at St James’ Park before next week’s deadline, with Newcastle ready to pursue alternatives if a compromise can’t be agreed soon.
Luke Edwards reveals that the player himself is ‘desperate’ to join and will have no problem agreeing personal terms, but it seems ongoing talks are in danger of reaching a deadlock over the transfer fee.
The Toffees are holding out for £60m – the amount Chelsea offered over the summer – yet that seems much more than Newcastle are willing to pay; and rightly so for a talented yet raw winger who hasn’t even made their starting 11 in recent months.
Newcastle are still hopeful a deal can be struck and believe they’ve seen off rival interest from Stamford Bridge, however The Telegraph add that attentions may turn to Hakim Ziyech if talks continue to stall.
It feels like an element of brinkmanship is in play here, but a cut-off point is needed now there’s less than a week remaining until the January window slams shut.
No way the lad is worth £60m. Anything over £30m is questionable imo.
Chelsea seem to have money to burn – left them spend £60m on Gordon & we can take Ziyech on loan to buy option – or better still Gallagher.
£35m should be our ceiling for Gordon – absolutely no way more than that imo.
