Cheik Tiote loses red card appeal.

Cheik Tiote
Tiote loses appeal.
Well it didn’t take long for the news that Cheik Tiote’s appeal against the red card he received at Stevenage has been overturned.

I must say that I’m not surprised that The FA have decided not to rescind the red card, but I am surprised that they didn’t increase the length of the ban to four games.

This now means that Tiote will be missing for the weekend trip to Sunderland as well as the matches against Tottenham and Fulham. He will return to the first-team against Arsenal when they visit St James’ Park on February 5th.

It’s a huge blow to lose Tiote, but it was bound to happen at some point, in fact it already did earlier on the season after he clocked up five yellow cards. Obviously now he is going to miss another three games, and if, or when is perhaps more appropriate, he recieves two more yellow cards he will be missing for another two games.

The merits of the red card can be debated until our faces turn blue. Yes he got the ball, but he left the geround in the process which means he has no control over his body. I suspect this is what The FA will have considered. Like it or not, but I think it was probably the right call.

The problem now is how do we replace him? Tiote has been outstanding for us so far this season, and replacing him with the limited resources at our disposal won’t be easy. Alan Smith could slot back into the team, although the thought of that fills me with dread to be honest.

I guess one way around it is to play Joey Barton in the centre of mdfield and play Wayne Routledge out wide, although Routledge has hardly pulled up any trees this season.

It would be too much of a risk, in my opinion, to play Dan Gosling. The severity of his injury means that he will have to be 100% before he gets anywhere near the first team, and although he is scheduled to play in a behind closed doors friendly this week, I would say that this Sunday will come far too early for him to be considered.

The real issue has to be ironing out this streak that Tiote has in his game. He isn’t a dirty player by any stretch of the imagination, but he does need to be a bit more intelligent with his tackles which will hopefully hep him to avoid buidling up as many yellow cards and suspensions in the future.

That aspect of his game is something that can be worked on, and it needs to be if he is to be available for as many games as possible. Some of his bookings have been undeserved, but at other times he has been lucky to stay on the pitch. A cracking player, and a bargain to boot, but it still doesn’t mean that he can’t improve.

  1. **** Toonsy, I was just messin mate, you don’t have to start bangin the articles out now 😯

  2. Watching Tiote in the WC, I thought he was a dirty player. I mean he made Jesus loving nice guy Kaka go mental. Watching him at the toon, I don’t feel that way as I feel he’s not trying to hurt anyone, he just likes to forcibly let them know he’s there 😉

  3. Not sure I beleive that Larsson is at training ground. Would like to think so but Brums number 2 Peter Grant reckons Seb will be involved in League Cup semi tonight v’s West Ham. Hope I’m wrong tho 😕

  4. Well, maybe its time for Colo and Saylor to take their game up a notch – not that they are lacking – and do a little more passing and carrying. Since there is no one on NUFC that plays anything like Tiote, it will be time for a different form of attack and defense. That’s AP’s job, and as long as we don’t see Smith on the pitch, we just have to leave it up to him.

  5. I thought Taylor and Coloccini did that against Wham, Some lovely balls out from the back to the wings, Cue “Willo” and were back to lumping it at Stevenage… 🙄

      (Quote)

  6. Nonsense. We lumped it at Stevenage because their pitch was awful and our lads didn’t fancy the intense battle in midfield. It was their cup final and they played that way. It was plain to see. Not to mention that it was Colo who actually played 90% of the long balls forward.

Please stop with the Willo hatred. Willo hasn’t been great lately, but Taylor has hardly been faultless. The City game being the most obvious example, where he allowed Tevez to get goal side of him to score even though he could see the run a mile away.

  7. You are talking nonsense, Ive seen plenty of worse pitches in the past, I didnt stop Leeds in the 70s playing some wonderful stuff as well as using the physical side they are remembered for, Derby and Forest under Clough, Man City under Mercer/Allison, LIverpool in the 70s and 80s played some great football on far worse pitches than that, As we did in the first division under Keegan before promotion.

As for not wanting to get into a physical battle doesnt sound Like the Barton and Smith i know and Nolan from fat sams Bolton or lower league veteran Routledge.

I probably am being harsh but i constantly read how Taylor is a liability and how hes worth a two goal headstart to the oppositon, Well i personally think Williamsons as error prone and gets off lightly, Bolton, Stoke, Being outjumped by Zog and the other day…

Great stuff. One problem though, this ain’t the 70’s or 80’s. We are now in 2011 and our players simply aren’t used to playing on poor surfaces any more. All I have to do to prove the point is refer you to the game itself. Watch over the first 15minutes or so. You will notice that we start off playing some good, progressive stuff. However, after a few dodgy bounces and bobbly passes our play begins to disintegrate and we revert to hoof ball.

“As for not wanting to get into a physical battle doesnt sound Like the Barton and Smith i know and Nolan from fat sams Bolton or lower league veteran Routledge.”

That may be so, but when your opposition are well up for it, chasing every ball, pressurising all over the park and you have played 3 games in 7 days I suppose you can be forgiven for feeling a little jaded. Again, watch the game over again, it’s clear as day our lads weren’t up for battling in a congested central area.

  9. Colo is our best CB, yet you can tell sometimes he loses it and throws his dummy out of the pram so to speak. When he realises he’s getting out done he starts to take the ****-look at Bolton and the elbow, terrible foul because he was getting torn though. Even stevenage-he leapt out of line once and failed to claim the ball, could quite easily have given a free kick but instead allowed their goal. You could blame perch for positioning, and believe me i’m no fan of Perch, but colo failed to clear and left Perch 2v1. Losing your head when your facing tough opposition isn’t a brilliant trait yet he is our no.1 and on his day is usualll immense. Willo/Staylor well i think they’re both on about the same level, but on the most recent performances we’ll have to stick with staylor and hope hes 100% fit for the derby.

Still, any defence going against Bent and Gyan will have its work cut out…(excepting mighty Notts County of course  ) but seriously-I worry we may well see smith in the starting lineout…If he does start he should be subbed off after the first yellow because he becomes a ghost after that..but I really don’t know what I’d like to happen then…Guthrie on? Routledge is a joke tbh, he wouldn’t be able to even get past bramble 🙂 Ah well, I guess we’ll see what Pardy has up his sleeve.

  10. I thought the red card was a little harsh on tiote, i think marriner got persuaded to send him off by the stevenage fans.

as for the mackem game, i’m hoping we get Larsson signed up by then and then we could put Barton in the centre mid role with Nolan and have Larsson on the right. Hoping S Taylor will be back for the game as Williamson didn’t look up to his best

      (Quote)

  11. “One problem though, this ain’t the 70′s or 80′s”

Ok valid point but may i point out that we had a shoddy pitch under Bobby and we didnt just go route one all the time, We also played last season at Peterborough and Plymouth for example on bad pitches and we played plenty of physical sides in the championship who were well up for it.

“you have played 3 games in 7 days I suppose you can be forgiven for feeling a little jaded”

That is a weak excuse as it insults every poor sod who works a 50 hour week and are these not meant to be athletes with their dietitions, Fitness coaches and sports scientists.

If they were tired like Pardew said then why not play Ferguson/Kadar/Guthrie and Ranger and not the players who were involved in the Wigan and West Ham matches.

      (Quote)

  12. Again, if you were to watch back those games against Peterborough etc last season you might find that we didn’t actually play that well, but probably still won. Saying that, I’m not saying it’s impossible to play well on a bad pitch. I’m just saying that these are human beings and it would be naive to completely disregard the tangible and psychological effects playing on a poor pitch can have. As I said earlier, watch the game again(If you can stomach it) and watch how the game develops. It is plain to see imo.

By the way, 3 games in 7 days is never a weak excuse. You put a team that’s played three 90minute games in a week against a side who has had over a weeks rest(I think) and see who comes out on top. Regardless of skill level the human body can only do so much. Also, I wish people would stop comparing long work hours to playing sport professionally. They are NOTHING alike.

Also, Maybe Pardew didn’t see those young players getting the job done and thought his players could just about handle it? Who knows…

      (Quote)

  13. He was persuaded to send him off by the rules of the game, not the fans, lets not look for excuses now, according the rules he is guilty of serious foul play therefore there was only one outcome.

It’s the players fault, no one elses, not even the refs. The rules are there for everyone to see, and we’ve had plenty of examples of the type of tackle which will get you sent off. It’s up to the players to accept it and change.

      (Quote)

  14. Yup – if you leave the ground you’re gonna get sent off as you’re deemed to be out of control, at least they didn’t think it was a frivolous appeal and increase the ban to 4 games
Big miss for the weekend tho

  15. Aye it can be debated endlessly, and if I weren’t a toon fan maybe I’d see it different, still don’t think it was red and the laws should be looked at-but at the end of the day they are the laws and we can’t make exceptions. The only thing that worries me is that Tiote has said several times that he is uncomprimising on his style of football and that he isn’t going to change. Even if its just words, it shows hes a stubborn character, and whilst it undoubtedly has its bonuses on the pitch it will have its drawbacks. Its not even like we have the cover to say “calm down or we’ll drop you” because he’s effectively irreplacable now. Its by no means the last straight red we’ll see from him, but we can only hope he doesn’t become a liability like cattermole. He isn’t a dirty player like that B@stard anyway so hopefully we’ll be alright, and hopefully he won’t cost us too much in future.

  17. I’m not that bothered one way or the other, good addition to the squad yes but good addition to the team, not so sure.
If he comes good if he doesn’t then it’s not the end of the world imo.

  18. then again brum wont pay bentleys 90grand took the cheaper way oot and give him a rise either way f him 😛

      (Quote)

  19. Ice, would guess we’d offer about the same as Brum, maybe he wants to show abit of loyalty(tongue slightly in cheek)…but ya never know 😉

      (Quote)

  20. Fully agree, if he’s willing to ****** off from Brum for cash and stay if they give him more, it would indicate he’s in it for the money. Plenty of people have said he wants to stay there, but it looks like he’d move if given more money. Does he actually want to play for us or just want more to line his pockets?
At the same time, he’s only reportedly on 10k a week at Brum. I say “only”, i know it’s ridiculous but it’s also almost nowt for a PL footballer. Maybe he thinks he’s worth more.

      (Quote)

  21. Good evening Ice my friend and hows you 😆
Well I wasnt too surprised that Tiotes appeal was rejected even though I think it shouldn’t have been a red in the 1st place 😈

  22. as usual, don’t expect any transfer window movement until just before it closes…whenever that is…anyone know ? Don’t know why, maybe players starting the ball rolling to renegotiate pay-rises or whatever….hate it all…

  28. me too Big D, I just don’t like the destabilising aspect that it brings with it, distracts the fans…or at least me !

I reckon that we’re getting close to the day when we won’t be bothered by the transfer window any more. We’ll have a stable and good group of players, no injuries, then watch us go ! I still hark back to the Everton game away when Benny scored his goal, get Gosling in the side, JB, Nolan, the Bull, Andy Carroll, Tiote, Jonas on song, Collo in the middle with Steve Taylor.. Canny team coming together…apologies if I’ve missed anyone’s favourites out ! At the same time, it’ll be really difficult for one of our promising young ‘uns to find a way into the team..

  30. Larsson’s playing for birmingham now, he dosnt look too good anyway, got no pace.

that cwarr09 bloke on twitter just posted this:
Hearing that Ziani will complete a move to #nufc in next 24-48 hours

which would make sense if larrson deal off.

      (Quote)

  31. maybe Ice or maybe we offered him a pittance or less than Brum so can’t blame him if that’s the case. He’s been playing for £10k a week(allegedly) which is a pittance by EPL standards so maybe not that greedy.

      (Quote)

  32. Well if it was all down to the money fuk him thats not the type we want, we have had enough of them before. Although MA is tight with his money I do think they would offer decent wages and im sure it was a lot more than the reported £10k 😯 he was on, but I still find that hard to believe 😕

  33. TOONFAN could have been sprat to catch mackrel.

  34. Dave, I think we’ve prob offered about the same as Brum(guessing like) but think the lad wants to stay there….every player tries to screw as much money out of clubs as they can.

      (Quote)

  35. RICHIE divnt think so m8,they must have had a rough idea how much he was on maybe he used us to get better pay offer off brum, some evil thinkers aboot you know just ask dave 😉

  36. Hope so icedog, larsson dosnt look nothing special, but can cross a ball and would prefer him to someone who has not played in the premiership.

      (Quote)

  37. So Larsson doesn’t want to sign with Brum as they dont pay him enough and he wouldn’t sign with us because…we wouldn’t pay him enough.
Whats the greedy git going to do? retire?..
Weren’t their Brum fans on here the other day saying he was a model professional who played for the love of the game? This would say otherwise!
