Cheik Tiote loses red card appeal.

Cheik Tiote
Tiote loses appeal.
Well it didn’t take long for the news that Cheik Tiote’s appeal against the red card he received at Stevenage has been overturned.

I must say that I’m not surprised that The FA have decided not to rescind the red card, but I am surprised that they didn’t increase the length of the ban to four games.

This now means that Tiote will be missing for the weekend trip to Sunderland as well as the matches against Tottenham and Fulham. He will return to the first-team against Arsenal when they visit St James’ Park on February 5th.

It’s a huge blow to lose Tiote, but it was bound to happen at some point, in fact it already did earlier on the season after he clocked up five yellow cards. Obviously now he is going to miss another three games, and if, or when is perhaps more appropriate, he recieves two more yellow cards he will be missing for another two games.

The merits of the red card can be debated until our faces turn blue. Yes he got the ball, but he left the geround in the process which means he has no control over his body. I suspect this is what The FA will have considered. Like it or not, but I think it was probably the right call.

The problem now is how do we replace him? Tiote has been outstanding for us so far this season, and replacing him with the limited resources at our disposal won’t be easy. Alan Smith could slot back into the team, although the thought of that fills me with dread to be honest.

I guess one way around it is to play Joey Barton in the centre of mdfield and play Wayne Routledge out wide, although Routledge has hardly pulled up any trees this season.

It would be too much of a risk, in my opinion, to play Dan Gosling. The severity of his injury means that he will have to be 100% before he gets anywhere near the first team, and although he is scheduled to play in a behind closed doors friendly this week, I would say that this Sunday will come far too early for him to be considered.

The real issue has to be ironing out this streak that Tiote has in his game. He isn’t a dirty player by any stretch of the imagination, but he does need to be a bit more intelligent with his tackles which will hopefully hep him to avoid buidling up as many yellow cards and suspensions in the future.

That aspect of his game is something that can be worked on, and it needs to be if he is to be available for as many games as possible. Some of his bookings have been undeserved, but at other times he has been lucky to stay on the pitch. A cracking player, and a bargain to boot, but it still doesn’t mean that he can’t improve.

  1. Story going around Twitter is that Ziani is expected to complete a move to the Toon within 48hrs.
Whats he like? Is he any better than what we already have?

  2. Ice….he’s had a better pay offer on the table from them for a while according to the brum fans that were on .com …..either way he’s done nowt wrong and nowt that all players don’t do….unless he was asking for crazy money, which I doubt.

    Joorabchian to lead Toon clear-out?
    Harry Harris, Football Correspondent
    January 11, 2011

Newcastle United are reported to have appointed controversial Iranian businessman Kia Joorabchian as a football advisor at a time of speculation about a potential clear-out at St James’ Park.

Sol Campbell has been linked with a move back to Arsenal, Alan Smith with a return to Elland Road, and with no new contract in place for Joey Barton, a potential sale of the midfielder.

New manager Alan Pardew has stated that he wants to keep Smith and Barton, but it looks as though Campbell will be released on a free transfer

Owner Mike Ashley is also tapping into Joorabchian’s global contacts as Pardew also needs to recruit new players. Pardew is already fully aware of Joorabchian’s influence.

When Pardew was manager of West Ham, Joorabchian brought Argentineans Tevez and Javier Mascherano to Upton Park, with somewhat negative consequences. Pardew was fired in the winter of 2006 as his Hammers were threatened with relegation and after fall-outs with both players.

Joorabchian was recently heavily involved in Carlos Tevez’s abortive attempt to quit Manchester City, and may have moved on his interests after a fall-out with the Eastlands hierachy.

A Newcastle insider referred to owner Mike Ashley’s budget sporting goods empire when he told ESPNsoccernet: “There is a feeling that the club is being run like Sports Direct, so it would be no surprise if some of the fringe players on big salaries are moved on in this window, if they can find clubs for them.”

  4. I guess he’ll play out the season, likely on the bench behind Bentley, and take his chances on the FA market. He looks to be a good solid player but nothing great. Wouldn’t mind having him but I’m all for sensible wages.

  5. THS – Admittedly I have limited knowledge of ziani, but he seems canny. Someone said the other day though that he and Benny had a fallout when they were together at Marseille which could be worrying if he does sign.

  6. Aye, read the same article which as usual starts off negatively about the toon – “potential clear out”…eh…Campbell and Smith…so what… If Joorabchian can bringa aTevez or Mascherano to the toon I’d be happy. Plus Mike Ashley wouldn’t surround himself with fools….sorry…just joking..

  7. Dave – maybe we just offered him a ridiculously low salary? He is coming to the end of his contract so he will command higher wages.

Personally I’ll be surprised if we bring anyone in of any note this window (excluding Benny) as he’s more for next season.

  8. Stuart I suppose we will never know anyway, although I have a feeling he might have wanted to stay at Brum and I know they wanted him to stay, so maybe that was his way of forcing their hand. I know you cant go by the stories that float about but if he was only 😀 on £10k or even £15k a week it seems like peanuts for a decent player

  9. I think we should wait to hear something official before we make a judgement on the lad. If we’d have believed all the stuff about Ben Arfa we’d have had him crucified before he got here for all the toys out of the pram stuff with Deschamps. Larsson looks like he can cross a ball **** well, and it’s the one thing we’re truly lacking at the minute. I’d take him any day of the week.

And as for the money thing, if any of us took a job and knew that everyone else was getting paid a hell of a lot more for doing the same job… would we not ask for more. I know 10 grand a week isn’t anything to turn your nose up at, but the point remains the same. I don’t blame him, especially when we’re paying a lot more to players a lot worse than him.

But again, I’d rather here some fact. Boring, I know 😉

  10. Larson always wanted to stay at the Blues. I mentioned it last week he was still in negotiations with Brum on an improved deal.

If I was the type I would say my super insider club sauce told me.
However, I’m not as I don’t hide behind other logons.
