Is the Tiote deal a sign of Ashley’s intent?

Ashley showing his intention? The news that Cheik Tiote has signed a new, long term, very long term, deal at Newcastle is of course very welcome and actually shows a glimmer of ambition for the club.

If we want to improve we must keep our best players, and securing Tiote on such a long deal will go some way towards that. It’s not foolproof, but with a deal of that length you would have to think that it maybe rules out a few teams that may have otherwise been circling in the summer, purely on the basis that the value of the contract is at a level which will put the price of Tiote beyond the reach of certain other clubs.

But is this a sign of Mike Ashley’s intent? Is he finally starting to show a bit of ambition whilst at the helm of the club? If he is, then it’s a good thing for all of us.

The sale of Andy Carroll has left a bitter pill in the mouths of many Newcastle fans and has lead to a fair bit of despondency amongst the black and white faithful. However, that has been and gone now, but the feeling of wondering who we were going to lose next was something that I was personally going through.

Things were going along rather smoothly on the good ship Toontanic. The players were happy and they seemed to be buying in to where the club were heading. The sale of Carroll brought doubts into the mind of some of them players though and left them looking for signs of ambition for the club before they are willing to commit to a long term future on Tyneside.

The Tiote deal could be the signal that those particular players were looking for, although I guess that only time will tell us if that is to be the case. Call it a publicity stunt by Ashley, a PR exercise with the hope of achieving some extra season ticket sales or call it anything you like, but if it works, and it entices other players to secure their future at Newcastle will it really matter? The fact is that it would have worked.

The players have asked for backing, and today is a tentative sign that the backing will be there for the right player. It may only be a new contract, and it may only be a worthless bit of paper, but it is also a sign that the deal will be there for the right player.

At least I hope so anyway 🙂

  1. Be typical if we win tomorrow, our last three o’clock saturday victory was against Bolton about 3 years ago.

dunno bout that like mate! reckon there will always be divided opinion.
from a personal viewpoint….my heart says no my head says yes when i think about this regime.

I want to hate him and find excuses too (very easy – his own fault though) but when i look at the facts and the form i start to think he is a good man to have in charge (compared to a lot of others i see) in sorting out the club behind the scenes and developing us for the future.

  15. Moreno…that’s exactly my understanding of the situation. At the same time I think the players and manager have done a fantastic job at turning things round and maintaining the momentum, when really at the end of the day there have been a whole series of kicks in the teeth over the last few years, firing CH, sale of AC etc. MA and Alan Pardew have also been really lucky, cos the **** could have really hit the fan hadn’t recent results gone the way they did…

  16. I think he had the chance to be liked but he fuked it up eventhough I do believe that he always had good intentions for us, it was just that he fuked up somany things.
As I said before I think the biggest mistake is that excuse for a chairman he is a total toss pot

  17. Batty @127 & Richietoon…that’s about right, accept him cos we’re toon fans and he’s the owner we have, but like and trust him…never.

  19. true MM, kicks in the teeth in one respect as when I think of your examples of CH sacking and AC sale I am still pissed off but i also understand the method behind the madness and in hindsight the CH decision is proving to be right and IF we invest the money and Judas held us to ransom (which i believe he did) then that decision was right too

  20. Big Dave…I agree mate, firing that freaking joke of a chairman would go a long way to appeasing many people. But they seem to be best of mukkas, so it aint gonna happen soon.

  21. Moreno…that’s my point mate, MA has ground us down to accept the sale of AC with a whimper, due to his past methods nothing comes as a surprise anymore. Fortunately the results have gone well over the last weeks, otherwise the troops could be really revolting. Hats off to Pardew too, call it his team or CH’s team, but he has the team playing a better and more compact type of football…ignoring of course the first half against Arsenal and the bollocks against Stevenage..
