Leon Best’s Irish eyes.

Leon Best.

Leon Best.
Besty's Irish surprise.
In a week which will see the Irish, both real and plastic, celebrate St Patrick’s Day it seems appropriate that our very own plastic Irish striker will be celebrating another call up for the Republic of Ireland.

Ordinarily I’d have been something like ‘meh whatever’ upon hearing the news of Leon Best’s impending call to international arms, but this time it’s different. This time I winced when I heard the the news and I sincerely hope that Best can come through the double header against Macedonia and Uruguay unscathed.

Bare bones is a term that is rather applicable to Newcastle at the moment and we are hardly blessed with striking options. Currently we have Nile Ranger who looks to be struggling to get out of bed in the morning to go and kick a ball and run around for a bit, Shefki Kuqi who looks as though he has been up all night serving kebab’s and turfing pissheads out of his shop, Shola Ameobi who only really technically has half a face at the moment, although rumour has it that he trips over the other half of it, Peter Lovenkrands who erm….. exactly, and Leon Best who is the in-form man of the moment. Staggering.

These four misfits are charged with scoring the goals to finish our season strongly. It’s hardly ideal, in fact it’s far from ideal, but it is what it is and it’s these lads that we must put some faith in from now until the end of the season.

Something else that is far from ideal is our, ahem, star striker disappearing off for international duty. Don’t get me wrong, fair play to the guy as his goals and performances certainly deserve a recall into the international fold, but from a purely selfish view through black and white eyes I shudder to think what would happen if he were to pick up an injury.

Now I expect some comments along the lines how ‘it’s pathetic that we are relying on Best’ or how ‘weak our squad is’. Well deal with it as no amount of moaning and grizzling is going to change it between now and the end of the season.

It’s backs against the wall time and it’s time to get behind the lads that we have left from now until the end of the season. We need a wall of noise at St James’ Park, we need to make the opposition fear it and get on their backs at every opportunity. The players we have are waning after what has been a tough season, so we need to try and help drag them across the finishing line.

I’ll be doing just that at Stoke, as will Marktoon, Jay Jay, Dan4toon, davidtoon4life, shrewsmag and many many others that I will have missed. I’ll be drunk, and I’ll be rowdy, but I’ll be right behind the lads from the moment I step off the train!

Now is the time to be Newcastle – United!

P.S. I’ve not plugged the discussion forum for quite some time, but just in case you didn’t already know I’d like to make you aware that NUFCblog.co.uk has it’s own discussion forum where you can toddle off and create your own debate. I like to think of it as a chill out room where you can get away from me being gobby and relax a little!

  1. Big Leon will pick up a ”knock” against Stoke and will unfortunately have to pull out of his 2 big international clashes. hopefully.

Dear me is it really getting that bad, We could replace Best with a manequin dummy and dump him in an offside position and you couldnt tell the fecking difference… 🙄

Im more bothered about Sholas fitness which should be better after the couple of week break

  3. The fact Lovenkrands wasn’t even mentioned says it all. And rightly so, he’s about as much use on the pitch as a **** flavoured lollipop.

  4. CC- Mannequins can score goals? :O i thought they just stood naked in dorty positions in shops

    Moreno- 😆

  5. CC – To be fair though, despite the amount of offsides (which is frustrating) Best is the only one who is putting the ball in the net at the minute. Stoke will just batter Shola and he’ll disappear.

Jobey – Mannequins can do dorty things 😈

    Munich – Agreed.

  6. Jobey – It’s funny you say that you know as I was stroking one in Next the other day. The mrs found it funny until I asked if I could sniff the pants the mannequin was wearing 😈

  7. If Lovenkrands was actually a **** flavoured Lollipop, he wouldn’t play well against West Ham….

Upson would be all over him 😆

  8. Best has proved we can rely on him this season, he plays and he scores. I still think Nile gets too much stick, Pardew said he was late a few times and people make him out to be some scumbag – every time he comes on the pitch he gives his all and does well.
I’m sure if he was so much of a problem Pardew wouldn’t even let him play.

I’ve said a few times,I really like Best I hope he has a future here, he will only improve the more game time he gets.

Aye mate we live in hope of an effective front pairing who can trap a medicine ball and time a run off the last man once in a while, Ranger and Shola are the best bet until the summer.

Unlikely because leon best is mint (apparantly)

  15. Here in Germany they think the world is coming to an end…even blathering on about iodine tablets 🙁 🙁 . Pity like we’ve got one of those Atomic things in downtown Munich…no fault lines though fortunately…

  16. Heard a little *** bit today about that Indian story in the Mirror.

Apparently there is interest in the club from an Indian gadgie – the club are aware of it and are denying any knowledge, but that’s because they don’t quite know what to make of it – they have been stung before with ‘potential’ offers.

But Ashley isn’t going to give it away, he has the club running so it won’t cost him another penny. It will all depend on how serious these Indians are.

    Here’s hoping….

  20. I would never of thought they’d come a time where we’d be worried that Best is going on international duty but fair play too him!

Also really can’t wait for Stoke on Saturday. Can’t stand their fans 👿

  21. Ice I was thinking the same mate 😆 I know he had to meet the Fat Man earlier to get a few box’s of 2nd’s for the stall, but I thought he would have been back by now, unless Mike has took him out for dinner 😉

  22. Jobey – To be fair were probably still after a striker from that league and for a similar price 😉

  27. Well, to be fair, best has proven in the recent games that he has it and good on him and pardew for giving him a chance. its clear when he plays his is connected to the club and the fans and has the desire to score.

also cant wait for stoke, beat the fukin horrible rugby team

  28. How can people say ‘Ranger is probably a better bet than Best’

Ranger has scored 3 goals in 51 appearances and missed sitter after sitter. He couldn’t tie Best’s bootlaces at the minute.

  29. BATTY 😀 😀 😀 did you know its daves 70th birthday today, have you wished him happy birthday

  31. I can’t wait for Stoke, gonna get well lashed up, better manage to keep all my world famous poise and sophistication for afterwards though 🙂
