Newcastle looking to add youth and pace over the summer.

The Iceman on Toon's hitlist?
Newcastle manager, Alan Pardew has lifted the lid a little on just what he is planning to add to the squad over the summer.

With Premier League status all but assured (article about that later) we can at least focus one eye on summer improvements. The focus of those new players will be pace and youth, according to Pardew, who is looking to establish some success and stability at United.

“We’re looking at a younger striker,” Pardew confirmed. “We’ve got Ben Arfa, we want a younger team here.”

“If you look at some of the successful clubs across Europe there is youth in those teams, as well as pace. That is something I am looking to introduce at Newcastle.”

Youth and pace sound good to me, but its getting those players who can do just that as well as adapt quickly to life in the Premier League. A whole host of names are likely to be linked over the summer, although it’s likely that we are actually only interested in a select few of them.

So what can we gleam from this then? Well obviously we are looking at a striker who is young and has a bit of pace and can play as a main striker as Hatem Ben Arfa is going to be our number 10 according to Pardew.

Can you think of a striker who fits the criteria?

One name who won’t be turning up at St James’ Park is Nigel Reo-Coker. The rumour mill churned that particular story out during the week, but Pardew has distanced himself and the club from any move for the out of favour Aston Villa midfielder.

“There’s no truth in the reports that we’ve contacted Nigel,” said Pardew. “There’s no negotiations and he won’t be coming here,”

It’s funny what a difference a game makes. If we’d have lost yesterday then I’d be moaning about us looking too far ahead and how we should be concentrating on the job in hand. One win and that opinion has changed. I’m actually glad that they club have seemingly been planning ahead and I’m quite looking forward to it myself. Fickle? 😀

Anyway, back on point, who could the striker that we are looking at be?

  1. Thank God we arn’t getting Reo-Coker! Shocking player.

Few names spring to mind over the striker, one being Wolfswinkel who we were apparently looking at last summer.

I really hope we get Gervinho me, I think he will be our big signing.

On an earlier post you gave Simpson a big shout for man of the match. For me he played ok. Did what you would expect a player to do. Again for me was at fault for the goal conceded. backed off and off letting jarvis near the box then letting him cut back on to his favoured right foot. Should have pushed him towards corner flag. Over the ninety he did ok but was not outstanding. Wolves didn’t use him as much as I thought they would they concentrated more on trying to expose ferguson

  3. I don’t think we can rest easily just yet. I am happy the club are being proactive and I can’t wait to see who comes and go’s. I hope we keep joey and Jose but love the thought of HBA being the focal point of the team

  4. Cannot wait to see ben arfa in a roving role. nolan playing as second striker and Joey and Jonas right and left. The crucial signing will be the man to lead the attack

  5. Hey guys.. off topic, but just wondering where is ryan taylor? I don’t see him on the injury list but he wasnt even among the subs during the wolves game..

Didn’t say he should have got man of the match, just thought he had a decent game against one of the inform wingers in the league.

Aye they did aim for Ferguson every time, the keeper kept hitting the balls over to his side, thankfully Ferguson showed he can defend as well as going forward.

  7. The thing I couldn’t understand was how we made such hard work of it. Obviously i recognise that you can’t always control the game all the time but at 3-0 you would think we could get the ball down and pass it a bit.

We just seemed content to keep taking wave after wave of attack and stick Ranger on to try and hit them on the counter. Doubt those tactics will work if we are ahead against the better sides. Collo was my MOTM he is just sheer class. 🙂

  8. My view on Simpson is that he will always hold off and let the opposition get too close, he did it again yesterday and they scored from it. I think RB is still an area we could improve tbh, we seem to have quite a lot of RB’s who just arn’t good enough.

  10. Not being funny but getting rave reviews whilst playing for Gateshead is hardly inspiring, no disrespect like. Simpson has earned his RB spot, far away and above Raylor, Perch and Staylor

  11. nice article toonsy,

would like to see the guy from the picture here (sigthorson?). Not seen him much but seems he’s scored at every level he’s played at so has developed in the right way, seems to score all types of goals which is important.

Also wanna give some support to guthrie for yesterday I thought he was tidy, although it seems he has a lot to do in order to prove he’s worth keeping longer term.

  12. Tavernier is another one of our growning family of RB’s that can get forward ok, just wish they could defend properly.

  13. Simpsons had a very good season in my opinion, doesn’t get enough credit he deserves. Played most of last season with a bad ankle and just got on with it.

Right he got done of Lennon and Jarvis and cost us goals – them two have done it to most full backs this season.

  14. DJG… I got into bother a while back stopping a lad hitting a lass. The landlady wanted me to leave cos the lad was apparently a bit of a nutter and she was worried about what he’d do, just told her if she wanted me to leave she’d better get the police to chuck me out cos I’d done nowt wrong.
Ya get nae thanks for helping people these days, I’m not surprised most people don’t get involved 🙁

  15. I like the look of Tavernier since I seen him in the FA youth cup a few year back, hopefully he gets one or two pre-seasons games again with us and goes out on loan to a better team this time.

  16. I used to stick up for Perch a bit.

Have to admit he was an absolute liability yesterday. 😆

Didn’t know what to do when he got the ball, just looked way out of his depth, like a fish out of water. pun intended. 😉

  18. Simpson is irreplaceable atm,

We look solid when he’s in. At the beginning of the season Perch was just awful (and still is) and every time Raylor and Saylor have come in we look very shaky.

      (Quote)

  19. Welshpie – I agree. I don’t think Simpson gets anywhere near enough credit. I’m struggling to recall anyone saying that he is perfect, but he is the best option we have at right back IMO.

  29. I would say Simpson has the potential to be a good RB. Maybe I don’t give his enough credit. He just frustrates me so much at times when he doesn’t close down or gets too close and gets done. I just don’t think he’s a natural defender. It’s such a shame because thats all I want him to be good at, the other stuff like getting forward should just be a bonus.

Why are you not prepared to have a look at the lad Tavernier in a couple of games this season. Play the same same eleven for thirty eight games is that what you want. Dream on

No, of course not and I can’t recall ever saying that we should play the same team throughout the season. Could you point out where I said such a thing please?

Do you really think that a step up to Premier League level from playing a handful of games four league tiers below where we are currently is that easy?

By all means have a look, by bringing him from the bench of when we are completely safe. At the minute, it’s ‘unlikely’ we’ll go down, but it’s not impossible until we are mathematically safe.

When we’ve achieved that we can then start dicking about.

  34. there should be no dicking about.
we get more money to higher up the league we finish, we shouldn’t ease off.

  36. You never said play the same eleven each week but that what you were referring or that the lad was of no use. I just couldn’t see how you could make that judgement. For me he looked a very accomplished player in the carling cup games and the odd fleeting appearance he made last season.
Its the old chestnut spend years grooming youngsters then when it comes to crunch time bottle from putting them in the first team

  37. I think Tavernier would just be out of his depth tbh.

Ferguson is like 10 years ahead of his age in his head but he struggles still for strength.

Did ya see when their player was clean through past Collo and Fergie actually got back and saved the day. I proudly eat my hat about him not being good enough.

Did ya’s see when a player was through and Nolan took him out. 😆 I thought he was gonna get sent off was suprised he only got a yellow.

Pardew was trying to pick the best team to win the game with our depleted squad… he didn’t draft in an 18 year old who has only played at conference level.

  41. If Nolan had been an opponent I would have wanted a red card too. Yes he was miles from goal and Simpson was there but it was two v one and even with a half decent pass a very good goal scoring opportunuity was on the cards

  42. TlR – I’m all for the kids getting their chance, but not whilst things are still up in the air. In the cup games yes, fair enough, but you have to realise the cup games he played in were Accrington Stanley and Peterborough.

That is the extent of his appearances for the senior team – two.

and when we scraped a win at accrington. not saying he’s not a good talent, but he’s not ready… and we should not drop simpson whos improving for him

Not in the Premier League he hasn’t. In fact not even in the Championship.

  46. Jobey – Or even in a game that doesn’t matter. I’m not bothered about that. I just think it would be better for the lad if he was played in a game with nowt riding on it.
