Ashley calls the shots in transfer market.

A lot of hope is being pinned on this summer, particularly when it comes to player recruitments.

We have a good scouting department at the moment that, whilst being in it’s relative infancy, has already brought several youngsters to the club and has brought about the signings of Cheik Tiote and Hatem Ben Arfa. Graham Carr is the man tasked with scoring the continent and scouting players of a similar ilk to those two, but with the hours he has put in I’d like to think he can come up with another couple of crackers in the summer.

However, despite all the leg work that is being put in to make sure we can find the best players for the least amount of money, it is ultimately the word of one man that any transfer hinges on – Mike Ashley. Of course this is no different to any other club in all honesty as ultimately it is the man at the top that calls the shots.

“Myself and Derek are under the guidance of Mike. He is the owner of the club and he says yes or no. We’d like to think we can bring a few very good players here,” Pardew told The Chronicle. “Derek Llambias and our scouting team are concentrating on bringing players in.”

As I said, it’s no different to any other club with the exception of Manchester United and perhaps Arsenal who have managers who have earned a little bit of authority in the board room. I guess we just have to hope that Mike Ashley is in the mood to back the man that he put in charge halfway through the season.

Signing a striker is going to be the priority over the summer. I actually don’t think our team is bad at all until you look towards the attack, which is why I’d like us to beef up our attacking options. I don’t expect wholesale changes, but I would certainly like to see better than what we have currently. Alan Pardew feels the same way judging by this:

“Our pool of strikers needs boosting – there is no doubt about that. That will be high on the agenda.”

“You go about it like you do any other time, there’s always a situation where a club needs a new striker. You just find the best possible striker for your football club and that’s what we’ll do.”

Fair enough. Speculation and all the boring and repetitive groans from the same people will no doubt continue, but I guess we can only evaluate the squad once everyone is signed up and the transfer window closes at the start of September. Hopefully Mike Ashley will give us more thumbs up than thumbs down this summer.

😕 😕 😕

  1. As you say Sy “no different to any other club”. I have no problem with the owner having the final say on who we spend money on as long as he’s not picking the players himself.
Any manager should have to justify why they want to spend large sums of money and persuade the owner that it’s the right thing to do.
I’m sure the club will spend a decent amount in the summer and we will end up with a much stronger squad.

  2. yep 13th and that’s where we are now if the scores remain as they are – Blackburn and Wigan both winning, Mackems drawing and Villa winning

  3. I’m really not getting too excited about the summer transfers as I will ultimately be dissapointed.

Ashley’s record isn’t great so I would rather just be suprised come August,

  4. Aye Stu, I’m just taking it as it comes. Bit of speculation is all good, but I’ll wait and see before I judge properly.

  10. Come the end of season the other Newcastle United team take over. The last time they played was January and they went down to a last minute own goal!!This time they need to get off to a better start Pardew Carr Carver and the team providing the crosses and Ashley getting them into the net. I expect a hat trick by half time and it all to be rapped up by start of season 😀

  13. To be honest this is probably all pointless as I still believe Ashley will sell up this summer, or at least he’ll have a couple of offers to ponder.

  14. Batty and Stu @ 21 and 23,

Doubt it mates. His vision is finally coming around. He ain’t gonna sell.

  15. batty – there’s been rumours for months about some Indians and I’m suprised there aren’t more Indian owners as they have plenty of wealth and potential.

What vision? It’s a pain in the **** for him. He’ll go if he gets an offer that he thinks is acceptable.

Maybe. Do you have that on good authority from MA himsel?

Obviously not but he’s not stupid and it’s obvious that he’d like to sell the club as he has tried to twice already.

      (Quote)

  18. think stuart is right , if ashley got a good offer i think he would sell. I dunno if he will get an offer tho. Even tho i think he would sell if the offer came in i think he is committed to us as the more successful we r the better price he would command for us in the future. not sure how good those results where for us today. Great 5under1and lost again 🙂

  19. Don’t think Ashley has or ever had any intention of selling. I think that was all an act when he put the club up for sale to get the fans off his back.
Don’t think a man that has intentions of selling a club would put in a heating system in the training ground. Think it’s wishful thinking if you believe he’s selling.

      (Quote)

  20. Stu-

The only time that he tried to sell the club was when he was under great duress from the supporters. That all calmed down, and magically, the club wasn’t sold. Funny that the only “serious” buyer was MA’s buddy Barry Moat. I think it was all a PR scheme, tbh. I think he wants to make NUFC a profitable enterprise. I think he sees it as a challenge. Just my own speculation, mind. I got nowt against anybody else for making their own speculations as well 🙂

  21. no doubt we’ll be linked to everyone come the transfer window, agents and media know we have cash so will naming us left right and centre, I’ll prob ignore if all until the club announce who we’ve signed, like pards mentions striker is top priority tho wouldn’t mind strengthening LB and RB presuming Jose is off

Are you seriously telling me that because the club have invested in under soli heating he won’t be selling?

Do you not make improvements to your home if you want to sell it?

I’m not saying your wrong, he might want to stay, but everything about what is happening tells me he could be selling.

    Only my observations though.

      (Quote)

  23. Dave – Probably, but it just makes sense to me.

The club is on a good financial footing, they’ve tied key staff to long term contracts, their improving the infrastructure of the club and there’s been rumours for a while that Indians are interested – is there really no smoke with out fire?

      (Quote)

  24. Stu going by what he has done up to now he is getting ready to stay for the long haul or he is getting ready to sell and get to fuk outta here I hope its the last option 😆

  25. Tell you what, just got back in, turned footy on. The lino in the Cjelsea match has just dropped a clanger hasn’t he? 😕

      (Quote)

  26. That Cwarr on Twitter reckon there is Indians floating about aswell. I know it’s only him, but make of it what you will.

Even if it’s bollocks I still say the club is up for sale at the right price, much like any other business to be fair.

      (Quote)

  27. Dave – 😉

I just don’t think it will be as cut and dry as they are trying to make out. I don’t think the club will say “here is x amount” and that is your lot. I genuinely believe that if a player is available at the right price that represents a good deal for the club then he will be bought 🙂

      (Quote)

  28. ‘I genuinely believe that if a player is available at the right price that represents a good deal for the club then he will be bought’.

And I genuienly believe he will then be sold if the club gets a good offer for him. We are little more than a sports direct store, buy em’ cheap, sell em’ high.

  29. I wonder if Ice is pissed yet? Bet he is perving over the younger lasses (not too young mind but you know what I mean) 😆

And if the player wants to go of course 😉

Thing is, if one of the European powerhouses comes on for any player at any club outside of those elite clubs they will be off. We are no different.

      (Quote)

  31. Of course they will want to go, because the club will be stuck in 3rd gear. All part of the business model.

  32. Toonsy I tend to agree I dont think its a case of MA saying right theres £20mil and he go’s out and spends £20 mil on whoever he wants, But I do believe that if say we had spent £16mil and someone good became available for 6-7 mil that wasn’t available before we spent the £16mil I do believe that he would be bought if he was the right type of player.

  33. The point is that every clubs better players if they were to leave would have to want to leave – it doesn’t mean we should let them leave though.

      (Quote)

  34. Players will be leaving also, so that will add to the pot.

The likes of Smith, Perch, Xisco, Enrique and Routledge will all be leaving so that should fetch in circa £15m. Plus there’l be a hefty chunk of wages gone too.

      (Quote)

  35. Think we will get turned over once again at Anfield, we have never had much luck there.

Our away scoring record is poor which is a surprise given the good away wins that we have attained.

Which NUFC side turns up tomorrow is anyone’s guess?

      (Quote)

  36. Stu @ 57 Enrique and Routledge yes we could get shot of them but who is going to take Smith Perch and Xisco Smith we dont know if he will be of any good to anyone Perch we know wont be any good to anyone as for Xisco I think we might be better off letting him go for nowt just to get him off the books

Not really. Just part of the football food chain. It’s happened for years and will continue to happen.

Do you really think we’d have signed the top top players we once did, like Ginola, Asprilla, if we weren’t near the top of the food chain? Worst thing to happen to NUFC in this current era was Shepherd taking the reins IMO, or Sir John Hall handing it over, whichever way.
