Is there a message to our transfers?

Marveaux-lous business?
Well that’s three signings made in a short space of time. Quite frankly, I’m not used to it although I’m not going to grumble about it.

I mean how can you grumble? We’ve secured a highly-rated French international midfielder in the form of Yohan Cabaye, a Senegalese striker who has demonstrated that he can score goals in the Premier League in the shape of Demba Ba, and a winger that had all but signed for Liverpool only for the deal to fall through, for whatever reason, at the last minute in the guise of Sylvain Marveaux.

Well apparently you can grumble as, despite their pedigree and talent, they aren’t expensive enough for some of our fans. Personally I would call it good business, although it seems as though the transfer fund watchers are out on force after the arrival of these three players.

Quite rightly it’s been pointed out that those three players arrived for roughly the same amount as what Kevin Nolan left for. This, essentially, should leave a fairly big chunk of the Andy Carroll transfer fee ready to be used when you take off a bit for wages and so on.

This is not a bad move. We’ve been hearing for ages now, from Alan Pardew and Graham Carr, about how the club are doing their homework in the transfer market. I’m assuming that this homework is paying off in the form of these three players.

Cheapos or freebies maybe, but does it really matter? Not to me it doesn’t. If we can get quality in for little outlay then I’m all for it. Would people have preferred it had we spent say £15 million on Cabaye, Demba Ba and Marveaux? Would it make them better or worse players? In a word, no.

The way I see it is that the club have acted quickly to secure players who are high priority due to their contractual situations or due to the possibility of another club pipping us to them. Basically the club have acted quickly, but only because they will have had to or risk losing out.

It’s been pointed out that we’ve effectively not spent a penny (well in footballing terms anyway) so far this window, but isn’t that a good thing? We have cash to spend still so if something comes up we can act just as quickly. I mean did people expect us to lavish cash as soon as the window opened? If so, how many other clubs have done the same so far in this window?

The fact is that it it’s rare that you see much activity this early in the window. Players will be holding out to see what happens and who comes in for them before committing to a move anywhere, much like we are seeing with Jose Enrique right now as it happens. Later on in the window, when things start moving, we’ll have the cash, and it would appear, the speed to be able to move quickly.

So in conclusion, don’t panic. We may not have spent anything thus far, but there is still time to go and we do still have cash in the bank if the right player comes along.

Mind you, more freebies like we’ve got would be nice!

    have bidded for Charles Nzogbia

Is the fat controller really doing this???Shocked if true..

  2. My complaints haven’t been the signings themselves, our skill at finding contract loopholes, clauses, etc. is incredible.

My concern was that more were leaving than were coming in. Our squad was too small before and it still seems to have shrunk, but if we keep this up, we can finally get some numbers AND higher quality.

I say another two or three signings with no more outgoings and this transfer window is almost perfectly done with about two months left to spare.

If we sign N’Zogbia, he will get a 4 or 5 year contract. It will take him to 30 years old.

Keep it up whoever is behind this, we’ve got half a first team so far for virtually nothing and Chelsea spunked £50m for one goal from Torres.

  3. Let’s hope the club’s medical staff have done their homework too. It kind of takes the edge of things when Pardew states that there are ‘issues’ with Ba’s medical and ‘Big hurdles still to cross’ (was hurdling part of the medical?) Then there are concerns over Marvelleaux’s recurring groin problem. Yes it’s good business getting them on a free, as long as they spend more time on the pitch than in the treatment room.

  4. Unless we are keeping Best and the other strikers, then we need to sign another striker though. Ba is a time bomb and to rely on him solely is silly.

I hope the talk of trying to flog Best is just paper talk.

  5. oui there is a message… when its in ashleys interests (money), we can move at the speed of light to get em in. For once i will not complain…. esp with zogs on the bgrink of a return..even at 12 million he is a snip as he is going to own that left flank in the french national squad soon. Nolan…never heard of him.

  6. I’m glad with those 3 signings for next to nothing 😀
Although I’m a little concerned about the fact Demba Ba and Marveaux may have underlining medical problems but hey , they didn’t cost us 110k a week and 18million like Owen 😉

  7. Could be that Alan Carr’s dad turns out to be Ashley’s best ever appointment. Highlights just what idiots the three Wise men were.

  10. I have hoped someone who works for ITV wouldn’t have put “bidded”, it makes me doubt the N’Zogbia stuff.

  11. I also think we should put in a cheeky 15mil + bid for Falcao 😉
Has everything required to make in the prem I think and he could use us as a stepping stone perhaps .
    I’ll keep dreaming 😛

      (Quote)

  12. with all of these savings perhaps we’ll make a bid for someone like sturridge, + he’s young enuff to have a resale value..

or maybe Defoe, I’d personally go for Bendtner from **** offering 10mill.

Seems like Zog will be shelved, not such a bad idea since he treated us poorly going to a bigger club in Wigan. Was always a bit huffy too

  13. Sturridge + N’zog + Decent LB replacement for Jose and I’ll consider this the best Transfer Window in a long time 🙂

  20. Seems to me that Cashley is selling players and replacing them on the cheap. Could it be he will transfer the money to sjp holdings to clear the debt (start paying himself back) and is therefore getting ready to sell the club? He is an asset stripper. A bit worried that we have signed two players who had issues with medicals to add to Ben Arfa and Gosling.

      (Quote)

  21. Lots of people expecting another signing today, some reliable sources saying same – if this team can gel and hit the ground running we could have a great season !

  22. Hey Lads
Can I join your blog? Its nice to see a blog that is peopled by mainly intelligent and thoughtful people rather than belligerent aggressive yobs. Its so good you give space to contributors like Deepak and Belfast Toon -great reads and very refreshing. I used to post On Eds site a couple of years ago but abandoned that when it became childish and aggressive. Anyway I just wanted you to know I’ve been reading this blog for a while without posting and am impressed with how you have a great community feel to it – even when we don’t all necessarily agree with everything thats written. Cheers and well done

  23. Lads so we have apparently bid for the zog and gervinho we are in last min bid for… Think they getting a bit excited as no one had a clue about the last transfer! 😆

  26. Where are all these players going to fit in 😆

I dont think theres any chance of us getting them both mind, I dont think theres any chance of Gervinho to be honest now he’s in talks with Arsenal.

  27. Does this mean we have to start eating more garlic? And drive around in a small hatchback with a heavy clutch? 💡

  28. Gervinho and Nzogbia?

who said this?!? any links before my underpants burst with excitement 😯

  29. I don’t want Gervinho, I hope we stop that now.

Push for N’Zogbia and another striker and maybe someone who can switch between Tiote cover and a spot in the back four and I think we are set as youth can fill the other spots.

How are we going to work with the foreign player rule though? We have gone from one of the most UK based squads in the league to potentially one of the least UK based.

Agree with you FJ, if he comes now it will be just for money.
**** him he’s had his chance and blew it.
At least we know that N’Zog wants to come to play football, not just for money.

      (Quote)

  34. Yes, there is a very good message in this. They have a plan, and they are sticking to it. If you don’t want to come along that is fine, we make you an offer, you don’t want it, we sell you to West Ham.
Kevin Nolan is a hero for all that he did for Newcastle, but I rather like the no nonsense message in this.
The other message is that there will be no more Boumsong transfers hopefully, as in completely inflated prices being paid, if the price ain’t right, keep your player, we will get something on a free.
Obviously it might be that come end of next season and we arre relegated…then we know who will be blamed for being a cheap idiot. 🙂
Still, for all that has been shown so far, it is looking very promising.

  36. Spot on Sy, we have been down the road of spunking money on untried players and what has it brought us? Sweet F A is the answer.

At least if these Players flop, it won’t be expansive like it has been in the past.

Not forgetting we still have a sizeable kitty should needs require.

The only person you should trust on twitter is MsiDouglas, he got the Cabaye one and then Cwarr07 followed him. He also said the Marveaux one at around 8 in the morning, before it was on the website. Cwarr07 hadnt even mentioned Sylivan.

People will actually fear us and wouldnt no what hit them with all the pace and beautifull football we will be playing. 😀

  40. As cover for Tiote, we would be mad to pass up on Reo Coker.

He isn’t a world beater, but he’s strong as an ox and one thing he can do is break up play.

He hasn’t got a club and is only 27! Go in for him!

      (Quote)

  41. Is all of this purely from how we treated Ben Arfa after his injury? It can’t have impressed people that much that we try to sign half their national team, lol.

It would just be nice to have some variety. The only non-French guy we signed was Demba Ba and even he was born in France but chose Senegal for his national team, lol.

Poor Neil Taylor is gonna look like the odd one out. France, France, France, France, France, Wales.

  42. Alain Pardue wasn’t joking like was he what he said he would be shopping in the french market. He might have to get rosseta stone and learn a bit french at this rate. 😆

What Wenger comes on the first day of the season he will be able to converse with half our squad better than Pardew. 😕

  43. For all the talk of home grown players…. I’ve got an article half written in my head about that which will look at where we stand. That’s if I remember it tomorrow as I’m out on the lash this evening.

  46. I read somewhere Toonsy that the EU have said it is unconstitutional. Thats quite handy like. They do have a point we are like the states or something and it could be illegal to outlaw players because of what country they come from. The EU are pretty powerful aswell and control everything from the shape of the cucumbers we eat to what colour socks we wear so I can’t see UEFA telling them what to do. 🙂

  47. I think we could get Zog and Ger … Pardew might want the pacy fella to play of the man mountain Demba Ba, Gervinhio could be the man for the job

an Zog is quality , if we have him jonas, Barton and Mav … 4 good wingers plus young ferguson as cover an R taylor can do a job der as well…

  50. IMO DON’T expect huge transfer fees.

Ashley has set this up perfectly and we for the first time are seeing his system in process.

With small fee and no fee transfers amortisation on the books (depreciation) is close to zero – YET your asset the player has a book value (large ones in this case)

It means that he is using our brand in france where there are great players, using the proceeds of selling young cheap players (Carroll in this case) to pay probably bigger wages. (Not silly but bigger)

Our accounts will be great but for this model to endure brilliantly – there will be a player or two sold here and there each year.

Bravo to the club I say.
