Newcastle close in on striker deal

Maiga lined up for Toon move.
Newcastle are closing in on Sochaux striker Modibo Maiga, if reports is the Sunday press are to be believed.

The People claims that Derek Llambias has been out in France since Thursday trying to tie up a deal having watched Maiga play in a 4-0 home Europe League defeat by Ukrainian outfit Metalist Kharkiv.

Maiga had been on strike in the hope of getting his move to Newcastle in a move which annoyed the French club enough to report Newcastle to UEFA. It seems though that Maiga played in that game to earn his move away from the French club according to his agent Karim Aklil.

“He played on condition that the club allowed him to leave this month, providing they find a replacement,” said Aklil.

I’m assuming that, should we sign him, the complaint to UEFA will be dropped? I mean we would have met Sochaux’s demands so they won’t have anything essentially to be unhappy about. They’ll have an unhappy player of their books and will have a replacement in according to Maiga’s agent so hopefully the complaint will just subside.

As for the player, well it’s fair to say that he still has his mind set on Newcastle.

Maiga said: “I want it to be done with Newcastle. England is a dream. I want to go.”

That has been the rhetoric of Maiga since day one. In fact it was his words that set the rabbit away on the first place when he spoke about how he’d met people from Newcastle. Most definitely an own goal from the striker but I guess you can’t knock his desire to play for us.

Nolan Roux and Papiss Demba Cisse remain linked with us although it seems as though Maiga is the preferred choice. Who we’ll get is up for debate but we only have a maximum of four days to wait and find out. It’s quite conceivable that we could end up with nobody though, which is worrying.

So four days to bring in at least a left-back and a striker. Can it be done? Will it be done done? Are you nervous about it?

I know my nerves are starting to jangle…

  1. The key line there is “provided they can find a replacement”. What happens if they don’t? Will they sell him anyway, like we would or will we miss out?
Bit gutted not to be seeing Pieters this afternoon, but still confident he will sign. Glad I didn’t do owt stupid like get his name on the back of a shirt. Anyway the price of the letters is ridiculous. May just go for ba instead because it’s cheap 😉

  2. Batty – Me too mate, but not because of a lack of left-back or striker. Instead I worry because NUFC have a habit of disappearing after the Lord Mayors show. A good result last week, we should be able to at least get a point today, you know what is going to happen…. 😆

Predictably unpredicatble in terms of results. Hope I’m wrong of course

  3. Papiss Demba Cisse has much better stats and the Bundesliga maybe a little bit more competitive than Ligue 1.

Roux is supposed to be a decent striker with potential to improve.

Of the three Maiga seems the least exciting prospect.

If Graham Carr thinks he’s the one (after Gameiro, Gervinho, Erdinç …) then in Carr we trust.

  4. i think we should drop our search for this guy and get Papiss Demba Cisse his record is insane for scoring atm for SC Freiburg, he scored 22 outta 32 last season, and at the start of this season is on 4 for 3 so why aint we going for him URGH

  5. Sign someone before Wednesday? Doubt it very much. Our board full of empty promises and cover ups. They said we bid for N’Zogbia in Jan so why didnt they buy him in June? Now a club insider is saying Barton would have been offered a new contract in January!!! Somehow doesnt ring true. We will struggle this season because our strikers are not good enough. The only two transfers I want to see involve Ashley and Llambias.

  6. Batty, you were worried about the other 2 league games too….keep up the good work 😉 😆

  7. News this morning that we are indeed after cissokho and not pieters???? How can we “agree a fee” and “expect the player for talks and a medical” on friday and by sunday its actually cissokho who is favourite? Are we actually going to sign BOTH………i somehow doubt it. 4 days to sign 3-4 players. No funking chance

  8. German football much more open & attacking than ligue 1 where defence is first thought of almost all the managers. Scoring 15 in France is mike scoring 20-25 in Germany. Ba scored for fun at hoffenheim like demba cisse. Main problem will be to create the chances. At sochaux he had Martin to do that. Until hba is back or cabaye steps up to the plate we will struggle to create enough chances for whoever is up front.

  9. If we can survive until half time today with a clean sheet, then we’ll go on to win the game 1-0. Sure of it…

We need to get over this really slow start to the game where everyone comes out of the blocks faster than us. It has happened every game so far this season, and is somewhat worrying, though fortuntaely the end results have ended up going our way..

  10. If we do sign both I’ll be worried that Colo will go to Valencia.

Not looking forward to the last day of the window.

  11. STB agreed regarding toon creating chances up front. At the moment Raylor seems our most effective man as far as creating goal chances go, but a lot of his delivery against Scunny was from our own half of the pitch. It would be good if our midfield could get further up the field to support the strikers. I think it’ll be tough though, with Pardews apparent safety first tactics, this will change though one HBA gets back, but by then we could be struggling even more on the goalscoring front for sure

  12. Be nice to think we are going for both Pieters & Cissokho after all Pieters is more than happy at CH which would make sense seeing how we are short of CHs too. But sign 3 players in 4 days all for £7m+ each no chance!

      (Quote)

  13. @ Thad and everyone who predicted Pieters would be signed by midday today.

Never doubt the wise words of Baba Vanga. 😆 😆 😆 😆

Nothing easier to do than to read this regime. 😆

    Thankyou Grandma Baba 😛

  14. 🙄

It’s not chances that are the problem. It’s finishing them. We had near on 30 of them against Scunthorpe and finished one free kick and one lang range effort whilst Best and Lovenkrands smashed, scraped and sidefooted everything anywhere except the goal…..

      (Quote)

  15. Don’t know much about him and I must confess he looks like he’s out 10th choice. Hope he scores goals, that’s the main thing.

For todays game I expect us to win, so we’ll probably either draw or get beat. I’ll be interested in todays crowd – reckon it’ll be low 40’s.

  17. Baba Vanga (31 January 1911 – 11 August 1996), was a blind Bulgarian mystic who married the Great World Wrestling champion Les Kellet originally from Bradford and moved to their marital home in Gateshead in the early 60’s.
Her followers were convinced that she possessed paranormal abilities.
Vanga would often sit in the colliery streets of Gateshead making predictions on all sorts of subjects. Her notoriety was enhanced by the fact she had no eyes.
Vanga and Kellet had one child called Meg. Meg followed in her mothers footsteps by becoming a well known psychic and TV personality named Mystic Meg.
Mystic Meg married ex Newcastle United player Bobby Shinton and they lived in the Blue House on Newcastle’s Town Moor next to a roundabout on the commuter route in Newcastle. This is commonly known as the Blue House roundabout and is a well known location for many commuting Geordies.

Meg and Bobby had one child, called Troy Stavers Shinton, (later dropped the name Shinton as he wanted to find fame in his own right). Troy inherited the psychic genes of his Grandmother Baba and mother Meg. He would often post on the Newcastle United blogs, providing accurate predictions on all subjects concerning his favourite club.

Troy would often be seen at SJP wearing Grandad Kellets wrestling trunks and boots and would entertain the crowds with his pinpoint accuracy when the next goal was coming.
It is strongly believed that Troy is working for the Secret Services and is a former member of the Special Air Service.
He is busy writing his own book which is expected to rival the predictions of Nostradamus.

    No sign of Pieters. 🙄

  18. the thing i dont understand is why we want to buy this forward as he is basically er…. ****. his stats are very average at best and he plays in a **** league. perhaps we now have to buy him due to the trouble we are in with UEFA. its our route out of trouble.
I think we will get one target at best. there is not an effing chance that dekka and ashley will fork out 12-15 million on two players, not a chance. the fact that even if they did they would be 20+ million still up on bought to sold this year is irrelevant.

  19. Troy – Your mystic predicition regarding our transfer dealings is hardly remarkable given the form of the regime.

Same old, same old for me.

  20. I don’t remember us creating many chances against proper Premiership sides like Arsenal & the Mackems. Scunthorpe was mainly in 2nd half when they were starting to tire after the harrying they’d done in the 1st half.

If we create as many today against Fulham, I’d be surprised (pleasantly).
Decent side Fulham and with he games they’ve already played, they will be a more cohesive unit than our side that is just starting the gelling process.

Will be covering the potential disappointment of a Toon defeat by backing the away win and hoping I ‘ll lose some money…

  22. @stu…. maybe even high 30’s mate. i think that would be a good thing if it were low as it may give fatty a huge shock and push him on to get the players we so desperatley need. the whole world knows we need a LB and forward andthe forward thing has been the go since january…so much for’stealing a marhc on our rivals’ as AP said after the january window closed.
I am now starting to think that AP will be naffed off if we get no players in and he may well walk as he could find it like the rest did.. impossible to work with bullsh1tters.

  23. Arsenal and Mackems were different games. If people can’t see that then, well, erm, just well…..

Arsenal are still a top team and very few teams get a look in with them. It was also our first match with a raft of new players.

Mackems were looking for revenge and came flying out the traps as a result. We were always going to be under the cosh for a while although the stats suggest that we had just as many pops on goal as they did.

  24. Mid-40’s for me. Maybe even high 40’s. This game is not on TV like the Arsenal game. There is also a concerted effort from many fan groups to bring back the scarves which is bringing it’s own interest and is enticing people along.

  26. saying as we have only beat fulham once since 2005 and we are in a mess behind the scenes as usual and we are hitting the end fo the window and no LB or forward despite AP hollow words, crowd naffed off, players naffed off, AP naffed off… i think it will be a narrow loss today for us. There is no feel good factor around st james at this time and it will reflect on the pitch .

      (Quote)

  27. I just don’t get why people are so down about the players. Who knows they are “naffed off”? Supposition at best and wishful thinking IMO.

As I said yesterday, what is to say that these new players won’t form their own team spirit? The previous lot (who were all written off but now have thousands ******* them) did so why can’t these?

      (Quote)

  28. Different, like not against League one cloggers who hadn’t won a match all season? They played above their level (like a Championship side) and we played below (Championship without the fight) for 45 minutes and in 2nd half we upped it a level.

I hope I’m wrong but against the decent sides, I think we will struggle to break them down. Does not contradict the comment about strikers not hitting barn doors even when we do create chances.

      (Quote)

  29. Pieters is a must as he will improve the balance of the side, can play LB and CH, is a cloggy international, which says it all. Hope he arrives, fingers crossed he will

Cissokho…no way. No disrespect to Lyon, if he cannot get into the Lyon side, then he aint gonna hack it for us..

    Pappa Cisse…13 million euros…too risky…

I reckon Maiga won’t come either…too risky, unproven striker…..the bloke has gotten himself a serious pair of donkeys ears with his blathering in the press. The only thing we’re gonna get out of this player is a fine from UEFA for tapping up. Well done Owl Heed…

Another disappointing transfer window closes, and I don’t have the benefit of Grandma Baba Vanga…

  30. Troy….are you really Mystic Meg..???….The genetics of it all would suggest so…never seen here posing in Grandpa Les Kellet’s jockeys before though…… 😆 😆

  33. @ Craig chisholm. I don’t think it’s fair to label anyone as **** before you’ve had the chance to watch them play. Everyone knows that a flop for one team can be a legend for another. Remember it’s not about the “best” players it’s about the “right” players when building a team. Everyone who we are linked with who goes on to get signed should not be judged on past performances, but what they do when they put on their famous black and White shirt.
Let’s get behind the lads today and give them support like no other fans do. If we can do that, we will spur on the players to a good victory today.
    Don’t forget the scarves everyone!

  38. When watchin us on thurs i was so pissed off at how **** Simpson was, as a first teamer, and loven and gosling, altho gosling was probably the one tryin too much with barton goin and the fact he’s been On the bench. However, i really really don’t like simpson as our Rb, poor touch, too indecisive, poor attacking outlet, so i do believe faults and all, Raylor is our best Rb. At the min anyway. Maybe simpsons head is up his *** with his baba sit but i’ve had doubts for a while.

Also my team would be this krul
Ralyor colo taylor fergie (till new Lb??)
    Obertan gos tiote jonas
    Cabaye

    Ameobi

I was impressed with big marveaux like he’s a def starter just not after playin 120 mins on thurs, which i couldnt believe we let happen.

I think the press are as confused as us, but as optimistic as i am, it’s not lookin good.

Still be happy with a good showing today win lose or draw. But i’ll be backin big shola 2-1 he’ll have a point to prove after his bro smashed one in!

      (Quote)

  39. Probably Cisse is an option…

LB is Ferguson. He is better than the Bull.
Look on MU – youngsters are running show…

  40. Toonsy. I agree but once we gel a bit more, Cabaye gets a full grip & HBA is back. Not convinced we’re there yet. That’s when we’ll be up the swanny with the current strikers unless Ba comes good or Shola goes on one of his legendary scoring streaks…(OK, alright … once under Roeder may not constitute a streak)

Stu, I think that’s kind of the point really.
The whole ‘mystic’ thing is Troy’s little joke. A kind of ironic poke in the ribs, because plainly it doesn’t take mysticism or extra-special insight to make that kind of prediction.
All it takes is commonsense and playing the odds based on the regime and the decisions they’ve made over the last few years.

    It’s incredible.

I have a bet on with Thad that by midday today Pieters will be signed.
If he signs by midday inwill show my **** in Fenwicks window.

  48. This is what the ‘Moonies’ are all missing Troy.
When they make these bets (like Thads) they are basically betting on what they want to happen based on wanting NUFC to do well.

They aren’t looking at the situation objectively at all.
They aren’t weighing up the likelihood their prefered outcome based on things which matter, such as previous events and how they’ve unfolded.

Yes, there is a chance that Pieters could turn up and you lose your bet.
No neutral observer would back that happening based on many events over the last couple of years.
You ate just playing the odds Troy, I can’t believe they cant see it.
The best part is some of them who constantly call you negative are now saying your predictions are easy to make because you bet on things that are obvious.
Well if they are obvious and therefore likely to come true, then how can they be considered negative?

Surely that would just make your views, dare I say it, realistic?
