Game on! Newcastle v Wigan

St James' Park.

St James' Park.
More home comforts?
Welcome one and all to our fabulous ‘Game On’ article which will take us through every twist and turn as Wigan Athletic visit St James’ Park.

With the greatest of respect to Wigan, this should be a game that the boys of NUFC win comfortably, at least according to the form book, and Shamrock who penned this stat-tatsic match preview for you all to peruse.

Personally I’m not so sure. My powers of prediction are famously awful so I tend to steer clear of them, but for some reason I have a feeling that we could trip up in this fixture although there is little doubt that we are the favourites for the game, especially if you look at the bookies odds – Skybet have us at 4/7 for the win while Wigan are priced at 5-1.

Unfortunately with the match being a 3pm kick-off it means that there is no UK TV coverage, although it shouldn’t matter too much as there are plenty of overseas broadcasters who have the match scheduled for airing. That should in turn mean that streams are fairly easy to come by. As ever though, if you come across a decent one the feel free to share it with your fellow Toon fans.

I’m actually at work today, as you read this in fact I’ll be somewhere between London and Bristol, so unfortunately I have to miss the match. However in my absence I’ve managed to collar Big Dave into supplying the team news which will you will find at the bottom of this article.

All in all that is just about it. Hopefully we can extend our unbeaten league run to 12 games and our overall run to 14 games.

Howay the lads!

  2. Wigan:

    58% possession
    4 shots on target
    1 shot off target

FFS! We should be walking all over them!

  3. Best needs to start getting ball side of his defender.

Keeps waiting for it into feet and gets sussed every time

  4. agghh stream gone down. Any streams i dont need to download software – one work computer – security tighter than the freaking pentagon

  5. Best is infuriating… The only time he shows any enthusiasm is when the ball is at his feet.
A couple yards away he puts in no effort to chase or try win it.

  6. When their left back has the ball Obertan should be closing him down. Whats the point in just standing 10 yards off him watching him play the ball out? He’s doing nowt else!

  7. JJ…

You watching the same game? Best is closing the ball down all the time, nearly nicked it off the keeper before…

  9. Another great example of Obertan getting absolutely no support from Simspon.

Poor football in that half. Is say Wigan shaded it 🙄

I thinking Best does hold the ball up well. But although Moreno sees if chasing and pressing… He does it in such a lazy fashion he never seems to be actually committed to winning the ball.

Obertan is guilty of the same thing.

  11. ok peeps….we have no divine right to roll Wigan over today, or i fact anyone in this league. Martinez 1 Pardew 0 on the tactical front. Pardew needs to change things around a bit second half to open up Wigan more. We are too far away from each other as a unit, we need to play collectively 5 metres further up the pitch and replace Raylor with Santon then we’ll be ok. HBA on for the last 30 to finally close the game out for us

  12. Also for me. Taylor is very overated because of his set piece ability. Which although good… Is also overated.

  13. I would be surprised if Pardew changes much at half time. He never does yet we always seem to come out better!

JJ, when you press the ball, it gives the defence and keeper less time to play it forcing mistakes. It’s extremely rare a striker actually wins the ball from keeper or defence in that situation.

  14. I would bring Benny on for Best and Marv for Ober around the 60 min mark if they dont start to graft, but I think they will come out with a bit of fire in their belly as usual

  15. We haven’t played well so far, but it’s still 0-0. If we step it up a notch we will win this game.

  16. Wigan are doing well in sitting back and closing the gaps forcing us into a couple long balls. We need to bring on someone like Benny to help cabaye and Tiote take the ball past the mid field.
Simmo is killing moves on the right and obertan is crowded out and not coping.
Raylor doing well defensively as it looks like they’ve targeted his side but the biggest problem is our 2 mids are getting nullified by their 3.
Benny or Marv to come on for Ba and maybe santon for simmo to help obertan going forward.

  17. Moreno
“It’s extremely rare a striker actually wins the ball from keeper or defence in that situation.”

I know that, my point is he presses so lazily he hardly puts any pressure on the defence. Because he does it half heartedly.
And if he loses an aerial challenge he walks away rather than harrassing the player in possession.
