The grass isn’t always greener!

Has N'Zogbia moved on to bigger and better things?
I was having this discussion with Marktoon in the pub the other night, mainly because I caught a couple of people talking about it on here.

Basically it was a discussion about players who have left Newcastle United, and of those players, which ones have gone on to bigger and better things.

To be honest it was a remarkably hard question to answer as I couldn’t think of many, plus there are many definitions when it comes to trying to ascertain just what bigger and better things are. Whether it’s more money, more trophies, playing for a bigger team or how you view any of them will determine the answers, so other people may basically say that one player has gone on to better things due to a larger paycheck while someone else may say that the same players hasn’t as he personally has done nothing with his career.

You see what I mean? It really is a hard one, but lets try and see just who people think has gone onto better things after leaving United.

The one that springs to mind is Scott Parker. the media favourite is now a starting fixture in the Tottenham side, but lets not forget he went to West Ham and was part of a team that got them relegated first. Yes he’s one on to greater things, but it’s been a roundabout way of doing it.

James Milner I suppose you could say has gone on to greater things, if you class a bench warming role at Manchester City that. I’m sure his bank balance has increased, but I can’t help but feel that he is over-rated. People will point towards that season at Aston Villa where he scored a load of goals, but the vast majority of them were penalties lets not forget.

Shay Given left and went to Manchester City before doing the reverse of James Milner and ending up and Aston Villa. He is now a goalkeeper of a mid-table team at best. Has he gone on to greater things?

How about Charles N’Zogbia, now at Aston Villa after a spell at Wigan? He sulked away from us, and Wigan, and now he is doing much the same at Villa. He never quite made it to Arsenal then? has he gone on to better things?

You see my point? Not many players who leave United go on to better things. They may earn more cash and have a bigger bank balance or another Ferrari as a result, but on a professional level they never really seem to replicate the kind of level of performance level of playing that they reached with us, barring a couple of exceptions.

Perhaps a sobering thought or those players who have even half a thought of cashing in their chips and moving on to “better” things?

  1. Enrique and Carroll have won a league cup medal within less than a season of leaving us.

    Is that success? 😯

  2. Newkie – you’re right of course.
Thanks for borstin me bubble like 👿
Looks like we will just have to make do with 6th then.

I just feel the need to keep calm, it would be just like some NUFC fans to start screaming for Pards head or claiming our players are ***** if we don’t manage to get Champions League now or something….
Fifth is still within reason, the Chelsea game being crunch time….Arsenal well, they’re due a collapse?

Meh, I’d just like Europa League, be really disappointing if liverpool mug us out of that 😥

      (Quote)

  4. Newkie/ BB – longshot of course but spuds are looking shaky and might be getting complacent and focusing on FA Cup? Could Harry have lost the desire or the room? Chelsea are grinding out results without playing too well which is a worry, but if they don’t start to play better, it gets very difficult to grind game after game. I found something Mata said after the match very telling. Was talking about the big matches they have coming up in the FA and CL; not a thought of the PL or their match against fulham.

A longshot, but we’ve given ourselves a chance none of us could’ve dreamed of

      (Quote)

  5. just keep calm lads dont worry about other teams its down to us i never expect favours from other teams, but dont expect better than 5th imo,we will get there 😉

      (Quote)

  6. Agree with you Ice. Personally think don’t expect better than 6th, and anything higher is a bonus even at this stage. What we’ve done with the last few games though is put our fate in our own hands regarding europe. We win out and we’re in europa at worst. Not likely to happen mind but you know what I’m getting at 😉

      (Quote)

  7. Our entire season rides of Liverpool getting to the FA Cup final in my opinion.

I doubt we will be allowed to finish ahead of Chelsea, so we need 6th to be a Europa League spot.

      (Quote)

  8. Dubtoon-Its true, I don’t think Spurs are going to replicate the kind of form they’ve shown for most of the season, but with the matches they have imo they’ll get over the line easily enough. As Ice said-destiny is in our own hands when it comes to Chelsea. Last year we drew with them both games and beat them 4-3 in the carling cup, who knows? Fifth is a decent shout, but for Champions League imo Arsenal will have to completely crumble…Van Persie getting crocked would be a start like 😎 can’t believe he’s going to make a full season it seems… 😡

      (Quote)

  9. Put it this way, Liverpool received around 100,000 pounds reward, a flashy trophy and a place in the Europa League for winning the Carling Cup. If we stay in 6th or better it, we have the potential to earn 1,600,000 pounds more than Liverpool and gain a place in the Europa League without a flashy trophy ( granted that the FA cup is between Liv and Chelsea/Tottenham). In this modern time of football, success is usually measured by the money the club racks in per season. Everyone wants to qualify for the Champions League because of its lucrative benefits. That’s why most of the clubs would rather qualify for the Champions League rather than win the Carling cup or even the FA cup. So, I don’t think Enrique or Carroll would see the Carling cup as a genuine success, but rather a medal of honor to commend their hard work in dusting Liverpool’s trophy cabinet 😀

  10. Chelsea got lucky today but I still think we will give them a good run for 5th spot. The game at Stamford bridge probably crucial. They have 3 huge games as well as the league so how will their ageing squad cope with that, all the pressure is on them whilst we just seem to be enjoying the ride.

      (Quote)

  11. i do not think for a second that the goal for us now is 5th spot.. i look at the table – obviously not the one one this blog as the end row is missing and it means nowt but a table you can actually read… i think we can and are pushing for 4th now. I think we can go over spuds and chelski in the run in.

      (Quote)

  12. Whatever happens now the lads have been a pleasure to watch and a credit to the shirt and themselves. All we can do is take care of our own business and with 4 wins out of 4 so far in the ‘final 10′ that is as good as we could possibly have done. We have basically ensured a minimum finish of 6th already which is far beyond what we could have dreamed about. The players are playing as if it is ’10 cup finals’. Swansea wasn’t an easy place to get a result either. Liverpool are looking out of sorts and Everton could beat them but on the other hand we could still finish 5th.

  13. well I’m now rooting for Manc shitty tomorrow, to bring a happy Easter to the Toon. 😆

  14. When someone like Cisse says ‘I want Champions league’ and starts banging in two goals a game like it’s nowt, then the whole squad gains in confidence. 🙂 Players like Simpson are playing with an extra 25%

  15. This 12 days of rest after Bolton could be a factor too.
Gonna be a bloody long 12 days tho 👿

  16. Nice article by Daily Mirrors Oliver holt on yesterdays game ,giving Toon & Swans credit . He ends by saying of Toon ” The time to be surprised by them has passed. It is more fitting now just to be impressed “. 😀 😯 😎

      (Quote)

  17. I’m glad they have it to stop them getting overly tired but worried that they might come back a bit rusty. Hopefully they get a few more players fit (oba, vuckic, guthrie etc) and come back well drilled for three some big games, get the link up play between those front four even better, and do their homework on the rest of their opponents….

Wonder if pards will take them away for a few days to take them away from any pressure, or let them stay and soak up the atmosphere of anticipation 😈

      (Quote)

  18. if we win all your games or go unbeaten whos to say where we will end up
we went 11 games unbeaten whos to say we cannot do it again, have faith lads have faith, i think the players seem to think so,a fairy storey i know but i can dream 😉 😀 😀

      (Quote)

  19. I think at least a draw against Bolton on Monday will guarantee us 6th spot with Liverpool, Everton and Sunderland all drawing today. I just don’t see those teams making the points up to catch us. I also didn’t realise how difficult Chelseas run in is:

    APRIL
    9th – Fulham (a)
    15th – Spurs – FA Cup
    18th – Barca (h) – CL
    21st – Arsenal (a)
    24th – Barca (a) – CL
    29th – QPR – (h)

    MAY
    2nd – The Toon (h)
    5th – Liverpool (a)
    13th – Blackburn (h)

    Verus ours:

    APRIL:
    9th – Bolton (h)
    21st – Stoke (h)
    28th – Wigan (a)

    MAY
    2nd – Chelsea (a)
    6th – Man City (h)
    13th – Evertion (a)

You have to say that the remaining games favour us and if we can get to the Chelsea game unbeaten then that would certainly give us a confidence and momentum to get something from Chelsea.

    Nee more injuries though!!!

      (Quote)

  20. I also think, anyone other than Pardew for manager of the season would be a massive injustice and would HAVE to be a fix.

When you consider what he was faced with at the beginning of the season on the field (ie players leave and intergrating a group of new ones) and all the crazy stuff that’s happened off the field as well.

He’s streets ahead of any other potential candidate IMO

      (Quote)

  21. Sharpy-agree with you there as well, but to be fair I think its something only we as Newcastle fans can appreciate it really, others just won’t get it. Rogers though has the “barca stats” on his side, as pointless are they are, but they have played very well with what was a predominantly championship squad and made some astute signings in Graham and siggurson as well. Even Lambert with what is even a lower tier team with plenty of “league one” standard players has done very well and Norwich have scored plenty of goals, even if they all seem to be shitty headers…

If we got Champions League I don’t see how they couldn’t give it to Pards, but failing that it wouldn’t surprise me if it went to one of those, annoyingly 👿

      (Quote)

  22. SHARPY anyone who can work with jabba and company for more than one season would deffo get my vote 😆 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  23. They will probably give it to Rodgers, but goals win games, we scored them Swansea didn’t. He can argue that we have a £9m striker but that arguement won’t get you very far in a league with Chelsea, Man City, Man United and Spurs.

      (Quote)

  24. DJG-Yeah I thought that was a pretty stupid argument from him, like implying we’re loaded? I think if he sold one of his players for 35 million he’d have been quicker spending it than were were 😯

      (Quote)

  25. Lads I think the point Rodgers was trying to make is that we are able to go out and buy a top notch striker, where as they can’t because they can’t afford one and they might find it hard to get one to go to them, well thats what i got from what he was saying.
In a way I sort of agree cause I would say if they had a striker like Cisse or Ba they would be winning a lot more games, so would be a better team.

    Exactly Ice 😉

I remember people taking the **** out of me for saying such a thing a few games ago 😯 😆

      (Quote)

  27. I’ve been saying it all season, Swansea are such a good passing side because they take no risks. Passing sideways is great when you’re a couple of goals up, but that’s all they ever do regardless of the score. They have no plan B and the praise they get is over the top on my opinion. People can wax lyrical about Leon Britton et al all day, but how many killer passes does he make per game? How often do Swansea get in behind teams? They flatter to deceive and their problem isn’t a lack of a proper finisher, but a lack of midfielders that can do more than the simple stuff.

      (Quote)

  28. Dave – I disagree entirely. Having a clinical striker would help them of course, but it doesn’t change the fact that they couldn’t feed the strikers they had yesterday. I mean it’s not like they fluffed chance after chance that was created for them was it?

Even Ba or Cisse would struggle with the ball just being passed in neat triangles 60 yards behind where they are standing.

      (Quote)

  29. Rodgers may be right in that Swansea can’t spend the money we did on Cisse, but what he fails to mention is that Swansea are now in the same group as Bolton in that bigger clubs will send high quality “back up” to them on loan to get game time.

Bolton got Wilshire, Miyachi and Sturridge on loan while Swansea have McEachran and had Fabio Borini last year – we wouldn’t have got those guys.

      (Quote)

  30. The Kid – 100% bang on fella. That is exactly why Leon Brittain has a better passing percentage than Xavi, Fabregas, Iniesta etc etc, because they just tap it along the back four, to Brittain, who taps it to the back four and so on.

Or are people really saying that Brittain is better than Xavi/Iniesta/Fabrgeas? 😕

      (Quote)

  31. “If loan players are counted in this discussion, then Giuseppi Rossi. We had him for half a season, unfortunately unable to give him games. Look where he is now. ” You’re right he is a great player, but he is with a team that are 17th in La Liga.

      (Quote)

  32. Dave-They can’t make the chances for their strikers though can they-look back to that match and then look at Cisse’s goals. Cisse was put through one on one, albeit the second one was a hell of an angle. Cisse scored them both because he’s an expert finisher. Now how many times did a Swansea player get one on one with Krul? I can’t remember one instance.

Plus, if every team in the Prem had a player like Cisse well there’d be a hell of a lot of goals. Cisse’s goals were quality, but saying they were the only difference? I would have banked on Ba or Benny netting goals one on one as well….

      (Quote)

  33. talking m/fielders,makes me laugh how fickle some fans are,ive read a few times fans saying cabaye is playing to deep, then when he plays farther up the field like y/day fans shouting for him to get back hes to far up field, but makes the two goals, ime being fickle now but makes me smile anyway 😉

      (Quote)

  34. I was wrong before when I said Swansea take no risks, they take risks alright, but just the wrong ones. Throwing your CB’s and Full backs forward every two seconds is just not worth it.

In fact, I would go so far as to say that Swansea’s approach is counter productive more often than not. Passing the ball around for 5 mins before having a pop from 20-25 yards. Seems like a waste of time to me…

      (Quote)

  35. The Kid – As is wasting energy chasing the ball down when they are passing it along their back four. Counter productive wasting energy on that as it’s pretty pointless doing it to a team so assured in safety possession. It’ll just result in our team getting knackered out.

Yet some people were chomping because we weren’t closing them down. We were, just when the ball finally made it’s way into a more advanced area.

      (Quote)

  36. Personally don;t see how you can knock the fella. Sure we’ve had bad results at times, but so has every other team. Man U, Arsenal have had hammerings this season, Chelsea have had a bad run, Tottenham are on one now. It happens to everyone, not just us.

That blog is a thing of the past. I never even read their articles, let alone the comments.

      (Quote)

  38. I’d say that the Swansea game was tough watching for unexpected reasons – We were actually entertaining for the simple reason we looked very much like the team in control of proceedings, despite the paradox of having only 20% possession at times. Swansea have been gaining plaudits for their style, but it’s absolutely without substance when a team realises what’s going on with them. Sigurdsson apart, I thought they were a bit like those trick football-juggling acts that dazzle with their skills but could never actually make the grade as a player. Pardew has probably rested that ‘Tactically inept’ tag this time. Swansea were rendered dull, mesmerisingly so at times, and I found myself wanting to fast forward proceedings many times. Our passing was a bit rotten of course, but if you haven’t seen the ball for 15 minutes…..

On Cabaye, I can’t remember him having a shocker, he does seem prone sometimes to criticism about his positional play but I don’t know of many players who are required to occupy such a fluid spot in the side, apart from Jonas. To illustrate, check out their workrate stats.

To Bolton – are we due to hand out a stuffing any time soon? 😈

  40. Sorry but I tend to think if they had a top striker they would feed him as I have watched them a few times and they can pass forward, they just dont get anybody to go forward that much.
As for .organ donors wanky and chuck have to keep it up because to say he is doing well would be admitting that they called it wrong 😉

      (Quote)

  41. @ 120 – don’t think they would feed a top striker, if you noticed how they tried to walk it in, they would basically cut him out of the loop and you’d have another sigurdsson, a quality turn picking up scraps from 20 yards out. But I suppose they would have two of them. 😀

  58. Swansea’s approch has been a good idea, they have amassed (almost) the points they need to survive, which is a big achievement for them. Against the lesser teams I can see how they break sides down and are hard to beat at home but when they come up against the big boys then it can fall apart and look like a bit of a naive gameplan. But they would probably get beaten by the higher quality sides anyway. Our team just stood off them, allowed their possession game and said ‘come on then what have you got’. And the answer was nothing really.

      (Quote)

  59. MM I can remember if we played **** and the players went missing it was Pards fault, but when we played well it was because of the players not Pards, but I noticed a few times lately that its Carver that the main reason for the good play 😀

      (Quote)

  60. At the end of the day, Newcastle have struggled to retain possesion in quite a few games this season, something which needs to be improved upon in all honesty. However imo Pardew got his tactics right against Swansea, cos he knew we couldn’t play them at the passing game, especially away from home. Any team that has Cisse, Ba and HBA in the line up are tailor made to play on the break, and though it was backs to the wall at times Pardew’s tactics worked a treat.

      (Quote)
