The grass isn’t always greener!

Has N'Zogbia moved on to bigger and better things?
I was having this discussion with Marktoon in the pub the other night, mainly because I caught a couple of people talking about it on here.

Basically it was a discussion about players who have left Newcastle United, and of those players, which ones have gone on to bigger and better things.

To be honest it was a remarkably hard question to answer as I couldn’t think of many, plus there are many definitions when it comes to trying to ascertain just what bigger and better things are. Whether it’s more money, more trophies, playing for a bigger team or how you view any of them will determine the answers, so other people may basically say that one player has gone on to better things due to a larger paycheck while someone else may say that the same players hasn’t as he personally has done nothing with his career.

You see what I mean? It really is a hard one, but lets try and see just who people think has gone onto better things after leaving United.

The one that springs to mind is Scott Parker. the media favourite is now a starting fixture in the Tottenham side, but lets not forget he went to West Ham and was part of a team that got them relegated first. Yes he’s one on to greater things, but it’s been a roundabout way of doing it.

James Milner I suppose you could say has gone on to greater things, if you class a bench warming role at Manchester City that. I’m sure his bank balance has increased, but I can’t help but feel that he is over-rated. People will point towards that season at Aston Villa where he scored a load of goals, but the vast majority of them were penalties lets not forget.

Shay Given left and went to Manchester City before doing the reverse of James Milner and ending up and Aston Villa. He is now a goalkeeper of a mid-table team at best. Has he gone on to greater things?

How about Charles N’Zogbia, now at Aston Villa after a spell at Wigan? He sulked away from us, and Wigan, and now he is doing much the same at Villa. He never quite made it to Arsenal then? has he gone on to better things?

You see my point? Not many players who leave United go on to better things. They may earn more cash and have a bigger bank balance or another Ferrari as a result, but on a professional level they never really seem to replicate the kind of level of performance level of playing that they reached with us, barring a couple of exceptions.

Perhaps a sobering thought or those players who have even half a thought of cashing in their chips and moving on to “better” things?

I actually think that Perchinio as a Centre-Half recently hasn’t been far short of Collocini standard performances. And when he’s been in midfiled in place of Tiote – again , he hasn’t let us down.

There may be even more to come from this lad in my humble opinion.

  2. As for Pard taking the defence and Carver the rest is that not why we have a No2, coaches etc but when it comes to the team playing and tactics I do think it would be Pards call

  3. i think pardew and carver work together well, when i think back it was big dave and me that did the most shouting to get carver when pardew was after a coach a lot thought clarke would be better wonder if daglish thinks that now 😆 😆

  4. UTD111 I must admit I criticised Perch during his early toon career, but the performances he has put in lately have been absolutely fantastic. It just goes to show what the belief of the manager can instill in a player, he is playing with supreme confidence, and Pardew and his back room staff must take some credit for that. Long may it continue and congratulations to the lad. I also thought the much maligned Danny Simpson was also brilliant yesterday.

  5. MM I was going to go higher but I thought that would sound OTT so I lowered it .
So if Colo is back for Mon who gets dropped Perch or Willo ?? I agree that Perch has done well but I would still rather have him as a DM rather than a CB

  6. DAVE kna i handed the bin scratting back to him the lazy git hes behind tesco at the minute 😆

  7. Big D 😆 😆 😆 Is Collo due back on Monday ? Thought we has knackered for longer, that would be a real bonus…

  8. Yep – when Perch played for Forest he looked classy, which is why we signed him. I reckon he went through a crisis of confidence when fans started to get on his back – but the boy has become a man, gritted his teeth and decided to show what he can do.

If Collo is back on Monday, I wouldn’t mind seeing Perchinio at Left Back.

  9. How many clean sheets have we kept this season aswell.
    Remarkable tbh.
I dont know how this seasons clean sheets compare to the record books, but it must be one of the best for many a long season.

  10. Ice@159 spot on there mate if Collo is fit Perch will get Tiote’s place….

    G’night lads…off to me scratcher…

  11. by the way i will give pardew 10 out 10 for one thing, working for jabba and company for more than a season 😉

  12. I would prefer they rested Colo for another game ,don’t want to see him rushed back and break down again as we need him for those really tough games at the tail end .As some have already mentioned the cover have coped really well so far and I think we will beat Bolton .

With regard to .org I looked on there a few times yonks ago but never dared post as it always seemed hostile to me. Lot of anger issues floating around on it.

  13. Kimtoon I tend to think Bolton will know that they need to fight for their lifes so I expect them to be a hard game, and I hope our players think like that too

  14. TBH ice AP is no shrinking violet.
He made it clear he wanted a 5 yr contract or he wasn’t coming.
Also Llamearse said he was impressed when AP went ape **** at him for not getting him a striker.
People will believe what they want, but AP is no puppet for the board.
OK he is their mouthpiece, but he is his own man when it comes to coaching the team.
I think he is doing a great job, which many other managers just couldn’t get to grips with.

      (Quote)

  15. Agree with Beardsley-some people have painted the picture of pardew as a complete tool who’s quite happy to be shafted by Ashley and Dezza for the simple reason he needs a job as he can’t get one anywhere else, even in league one.

Absolute load of **** in my eyes. He’s a committed professional and very very ambitious, in his youth he may have been a bit arrogant and snide and that tag has stuck with him a bit, but he has ability and drive and he realises his chance to achieve those ambitions is here and bloody hell he has grabbed at his chance and is doing well.

      (Quote)

  16. Big Dave, I dont think any of us were keen on AP at first.
He came with a poor rep.
But he has shown he is learning on the job, and not afraid to admit when he gets it wrong. Also he is prepared to vary his tictacs depending on who we are up against. Not just a one trick pony like Brendan Rodgers.

      (Quote)

  17. Dave ,Yeh they will be well up for it i’m sure but I just think we will have a bit too much for them. Pretty sure they won’t play for the point as they really need the three so will attack us which will inevitably leave them exposed to the counter which we seem to be so good at now. Add on the fact we are at home and it should (famous last words ) be a sure thing ….I hope 😉

      (Quote)

  18. DAVE no your reet i wasnt keen on him when he first came, thought he was one of a gang of three, but like a lot think it was a backlash from the way they treated hoots, big al, kk ect,but ill always give someone a chance to prove me wrong, not doing bad now 😉

  19. I noticed Lawro predicted a 1-1 draw for us against swansea.
And of course a 2-0 win for liverfool.
    😳 😳
    Tool 👿

  20. Oh and don’t forget lads he was only here to pay his gambling debt of 😆
BB aye a lot were against him, but I think there was a lot of bad feeling because he replaced Hooters and he was thought off as a God like being to some 😀

      (Quote)

  21. well Hooters DID do a great job, but clearly MAshley and co saw more of his management style than us and weren’t convinced he could take us further.
Perhaps they were right 😕 ❓

      (Quote)

  22. wasn’t it Hooters that was to blame for wasting money by buying Perchinio

      (Quote)

  23. Kim I hope your right .
Ice yeah everyone deserves a chance, but TBH I was glad to see him come in, don’t get me wrong I never once thought of him before he was named but when he was named I was glad as I think we badly needed a decent manager that was very media friendly

      (Quote)

  24. BB…..I think Calderwood got the blame at the time for Perchinho, think it’s about a dozen clean sheets, but not 100% sure and can’t be arsed to check 😉

      (Quote)

  25. Beardsley-yeah I’ve noticed a bit of a theme with the “Hughton signed Perch, he’s a flop” but “Pardew turned Perch into a good player with his coaching” malarky going on. I don’t quite see what’s wrong with people on both sides of the argument

Both of them were/are very good managers…

      (Quote)

  26. hansen & lawrenson, spoke more about chelsea and hardly anything about disgraceful linesman decisions – typical

      (Quote)

  27. Ice – don’t know why they ever let carver go 👿 was glad to see speed take him on when he became a manager, and even happier when he came home 😉

On Pards – i think the one thing llambias has said that i was more happy about than anything else was when he stated that he and mike like that pards stands up to them and makes them justify their decisions. It means that everything has to be well thought out to stand up to scrutiny and that they needed a football man able to articulate his opinions.
My biggest problem with him at the start wasn’t that he would be a puppet or a bad manager (or particularly good), but that they were treating hoots like sh*t for someone that didn’t seem like an upgrade. No loyalty to a man that did a great job for us

      (Quote)

  28. DubT… Just a case of a new manager(sourness) wanting his own backroom staff when Carver was let go I think.

      (Quote)

  29. Richie yeah i think it was souness who came in and he moved to academy director or something similar, which was fine. Fair enough for a new man to want his own people but kept carver in the club. Maybe he left because he wanted a bigger role but i have a feeling someone d*cked him over and he was replaced by Roeder in a ‘restructuring’ of the academy

  30. Remember that game after bobby 🙂 was zogs first game if memory serves. Always get a bit sad thinking about the days of sir bob. Great man let down by the club he loved

  34. BB – You say that pretty much everyone was against Pards at the start. I wasn’t, and Stuart79 wasn’t either.

Granted we probably expected better, I know I did, bit I always said give him a chance, which was something I learned from Hughton as I was proper radgie when he got the job full time and he proved me wrong over time 😉

  43. Stu – Even if he wasn’t responsible for bringing in players (it is unlikely to be just down to him, but he will np doubt have string input into it), he’ll have done well to mould what he is given to get the results we have done.
