Game On! Newcastle v Manchester City

One final time!
Well, sadly, our final home game of the season is upon us and we now only have one week of domestic football left to look forward to.

What’s that? Still looking forward to games in early May? A rare treat for United fans!

You see while all the talk will be on Manchester City and whether or not they put one hand on the title by beating us at St James’ Park, the fact remains that we have our own agenda to look after. A win today will see us jump into fourth place at the very least thanks to Arsenal and Norwich drawing 3-3 yesterday, in fact a win could even see us jump into third place depending on how Tottenham get on against struggling Aston Villa. It’s madness really!

It’s going to be tough though. Manchester City have the players to hurt anyone when they are on form so we will have to be wary of them. However that works the other way also as Roberto Mancini will have to task his players to keep an eye on one or two of our own crown jewels if he wants to take three points away from St James’ Park.

I just hope that Nigel de Jong isn’t tasked with looking after our players. Again!

For more background on the match, news of any injury problems, form guides and some fun facts you can peruse my match preview by clicking the blue text at your leisure.

The game is being broadcast live on Sky Sports 1 and via a whole host of overseas broadcasters so streams shouldn’t be too hard to come by. Having said that, if you manage to find a particularly decent one and wish to share it with your fellow NUFC fans then you can do so by leaving a link to it in the ‘comments’ section below.

That just about wraps things up for this. It’s our final home game of the season and I’m sure the players will want to send the full house home happy having secured three points and setting up a rather tense and interesting final day clash with Everton. However to do that we simply must win today.

Howay the lads!

  1. Prediction Spuds won’t beat Fulham next week. If we can get a win against the toffees 4th is ours.

  2. Well at least Spurs didn’t win, thought they would once they got the equaliser, so it doesn’t really make a difference for next week. We have to win and they have to lose

  3. With that,it goes down to the Final fixture battle between Arsenal,Spurs,Newcastle.

    Who gets 3rd,4th,5th.

    😈

  4. Newkie 😉 bad analogy using the fact Bolton beating them, they have the same points as Wigan who hammered us, what did we do in the next game again?

      (Quote)

  5. Newkie…you said the “dream was over” so surely you reckon it makes no odds next week how Le **** and Spuds do? ……sorry couldn’t resist 😉

  6. KimT….I think Spurs v Fulham will be a draw….our game ain’t exactly a walk in the park though, will be very tough.

  7. Thought we gave it a good shot today. On another day Ba would have scored in the first half and we had a few good attacks in the 2nd half too. Overall they are just stronger all over, but can you really expect anything else?

So we need to beat Everton, then hope either WBA beat Arsenal or Fulham draw with Spurs. Still got a big chance!

  8. M…..there’s usually a twist at the end of the season, hopefully it’s us that provides it

  9. Richie-Aye but for me Bolton have been gash all season, not only did they play the worst football in both legs against us, they’ve never really looked a solid team to me anyway…Wigan though-they caused us problems at SJP even when we played well, and they always start playing well late on so the points shouldn’t be looked at really in my opinion……West Brom did come back and proved they have some spirit-but they also proved how **** Bolton are 😉

I thought Spurs would go on to win it after equalising. Still possible but I still think they’ll both win or get a result good enough to see them through. I don’t think anyone could say we have an easier fixture……… 😯

  10. Newkie…amazing season whatever happens now like, I’ve loved every minute of the last 3 seasons tbh.

  11. Dave….considering it’s not often I’m right, you seem to agree with me a hell of a lot 😉 😆

  12. Yeah no complaints from me, absolutely fantastic season. Didn’t think we’d get CL anyway so there’s nowt really to be depressed about, regardless of next week’s result 😛

  13. Great season, but I dont share the opinions that we played great today. I thought we were even more nervous than city with much less on the line and our passing from certian players were non existant. Ben Arfa was the worst for me, but it aint over yet and todays result against the best in the country wont undo all the good we have done… Just disapointed we went into the game like that hoofing the ball up for the front two time and time again, resulting in City’s big rocks in centre def heading it right back at us… I mean, how come no one from our team began to see that? It was like they just said, oh well, it didnt work the last 99 times but perhaps it will now… It wasnt till the 80 minute we started playing our game and by then it was to late.

      (Quote)

  14. Agree with Richie

We beat Everton and Spuds draw or Arsenal draw we go fourth. Still just as possible as its aways been.

I disagree with Michael12, I thought out first half tactics of breaking on the counter were perfect.
Also I think Cisse was good. If anyone was poor and nobody really was it was Ba. Only because he was a bit selfish in looking for a goal when a pass was a better option…

  15. Anyways… There was an interview with Løvenkrands on Danish tv where he spoke about Pards… He said he was very impressed with pards knowledge and tactical nous, he said that AP is ALWAYS very well prepared and leaves nothing to chance (We all heard that before i know) But the best part for me was that he said the players had gotten to a point where they believed that if they just did as AP wanted them to, they would have a good chance of winning and results had backed that up. My overall impression from the intervied was that in his mind it was AP and not any one of the players who were the single biggest factor in our success.

  16. Some of the opinions on here are an embarrassment.

Moaning about tactics? We were solid and it took a fantastic strike form outside of the box to open us up.

Cisse done nothing? Oh, I am so sorry, were you expecting him to win headers against the fantastic Kompany and ever improving Lescott? Cisse is not a target man and City restricted us to long balls. They had Cabaye well tracked for the majority of the game and it resulted in the in-form striker feeding off scraps for the majority of the game.

I am proud of the lads and the crowd today. They gave their all, but in the end we just weren’t good enough. City have too many fantastic players and one of them popped up with a real moment of class. That was the difference.

Anyway, it’s still all to play for with the results going our way and at least we know what we have to do. Nothing less than a win at Everton will do and I expect us to go all out for it.

    Fantastic season

  17. @fans should own the club: That is my point the whole season picture Pardew has done better than even I hoped for he has done a great job with his limited tactical ability. It is none the less a good job I am in no doubt of that.

@The Kid while trying to argue my point away you have actually agreed with me. Cisse did do nothing. Make excuses but you are agreeing with me then. Even if it was not his fault that he could not do anything today the point is he did do nothing.

I too am proud of the team but we should be allowed to be critical. I am not insulting or attacking anyone im am just criticising pointing out where we went wrong and could possibly improve on.

  18. Micheal ,out of interest who do you think pards should of swapped Ba and Cisse for then. I mean who was likely to have scored goals for us other than them. and who would of been more creative than Benny and Cabaye for that matter. Who on the bench were the game changers you would of bought on .?, not having a go just really interested in what you would of done in Pards shoes like.

      (Quote)

  19. Micheal @221 just seen this post of yours ! did you just accuse me of being simple ?

      (Quote)

  20. ashame about the result today and i thought the tactics were spot on but the subs wernt right for me i would have taken ba off and put marvaux on next week it would be nice to see us go all out for the win ! you never know stranger things have happened.

      (Quote)

  21. How did Cisse do nothing, he linked up play when he could and got in the box when he could, but unfortunately nothing quite came off for him. Largely due to the quality of the opposition… 🙄

      (Quote)

  22. unlucky today.. all looked good first half, we started tiring a bit in the 2nd then they moved hightower up field a little, that made the difference.

We played the same against Chelsea, letting them play a bit, shame we didnt get chances but i’m not disapointed, great effort just a little short in the final third.

Hopefully next week we’ll come up trumps, if not, still a fantastic season..

    Toon toon

  23. @Kimtoon: I would have swapped Cisse for Shola becase we played for a lot of the game a long ball from Krul to Cisse / Ba who were losing it every turn not giving the midfield a chance to to come up in support. Ba had a few shots on.

I doubt shola was going to score although he looked good when he came on but with Cisse vs Kompany and playing long ball it is a complete mismatch. Shola would challenge aerially keep the ball better allowing time for the mid to come up in support. Cisse played alot like he did against Sunderland where he could not even get into the game and when he did get the ball he always lost it with cute touch and spin move that was never coming off.

Look all in all we have done well this season I am not saying we have not. We are discussing this game and in this game I am saying we played very poorly for very long periods going forward.

      (Quote)

  24. A bridge too far I think. Although I though we contributed to a decent game their class told and they’re the best team I’ve seen at SJP this season.

Got to say though, I thought Santon was fantastic again today. Looked assured, defended well and supported well in attack. Think he’s finding his feet and with a good left back and centre half we’ll have a cracking team.

      (Quote)

  25. Who is this Micheal12 guy? Must be one of those who plays a lot of Football manager and wins it all then thinks he knows tactics and players. Balls.

Well done lads. Great season and good game against City. Now go out with a bang n beat Everton next Sunday

      (Quote)

  26. But Micheal Shola wasn’t gonna get us a goal today ,no one would with that citeh back line, As for the midfield catching up whilst Shola holds up the ball ,they were all over our midfield players everytime they got the ball ,same as our forwards so that’s a redundent argument. Look its easy to sit in front a T.V screen and be criticle but with the players at his disposal I think Pards did the best we could. AND their first goal was a stunner from long range the second happened cause we were chasing the game and it was a classic counter as we had just had a shot saved then they broke away and scored if I remember rightly .Of course I could be wrong because as you so kindly pointed out I am SIMPLE! .

      (Quote)

  27. We were beaten by a better team today but in fairest, there wasn’t that much in it.
Toure is an superb player. Barca sell him and are 7 points off La Ligue title, City buy him and are about to win the league for the first time in over 40 yrs. He’s a major player for them.

As for us, were still in the hunt for the Champions League heading into the last game of the season and could still finish as high as 3rd.
Disappointed about the result today but not the performance.

    Let’s go beat Everton now.

      (Quote)

  28. @Kimtoon: my argument is theoretical Shola has the attributes of a target man and has played in that role for us numerously. So even I could be wrong. Based on what we saw all of first half and a lot of second that would have been the direction I would have taken. I’m not saying it would have worked and that we would win but based on the pattern of the game that would be a logical solution.

I didn’t say you were simple. I have seen numerous posts by you and while I am no judge I would not call you simple.

      (Quote)

  29. Micheal @221 ” Kimtoon not sure which game you watched. Look at the game with a more analytical eye and you will see all that I say is true.On the whole season has been great no doubt about that but simple minds are never critical.”

Think you’ll find you did Micheal since that post was directed at me . 😉

      (Quote)

  34. Well that was disappointing, was 0-0 everytime I checked (was at work) then when I checked 30minutes later we had lost 2-0 🙁

      (Quote)

  35. Zoe alls good nice to see you back on 😉
Ice we could all find wee things that we could pick on but in the bigger picture we have to be happy with what we’ve done this season, even more so when you consider we have been missing one of our 1st choice CBs.

      (Quote)

  36. Dave…Agree it’s been a cracking season and bar Citeh we’ve taken points from every team in the league including 4 off Manure, we’re defo playing in Europe and going into the last game of the season still in with a chance of getting into the Champions league. Not bad for a team many pundits were tipping to be in a relegation fight, what’s not to be happy about?

      (Quote)

  37. Maybe todays game is a true reflection on where this team is , the lads gave their best and in the first half more than held their own against a very good team . Second half after they stepped up a gear and in the end were better than us . Too be honest its been a brilliant season and their is a lot too be proud of but investment is needed if we are too step up another level and truly mix it with the manchesters .

      (Quote)

  38. Well I don’t know about everyone else but I would much rather be a Toon supporter than a Man City one right now. All they’ve done is show that you can buy the title. Well we knew that already. They’ve just shown us how much for. Not one of their players nor the manager would be there if they hadn’t been bribed. They bare no connection to Manchester City anymore; you may as well call them Randomly-Assembled-Group-Of-Top-Players FC.

It all reminds me of when I was at school and we used to play this trading card game called Magic: The Gathering. It was fun for a while, then some rich kid started playing and just bought all the best cards off Ebay. Pretty soon everyone got bored of him winning every time and didn’t wanna play anymore. 😛

gutted about today as i was sure we were gna beat city but clearly the best team won! they are a great team !! all in all this season has been one not to forget as ive loved every minute of it ! the progress the toon have made since last season is immense and i personally think we are only a few players away to challenging for the prem league!! we cant sell our key players in the summer tho thats a no go!
im over the moon city are close to winin the league as i cant stand man utd and there fans! lets go to everton next week and play our attacking no fear football and ive we get 3 points you never know where we will finish!! we are in europe lads and lasses and i cant bluddy wait for european footy back at st james park !! happy days 😀

Still rather support the toon roll on next season year 3 of 10 of my leazes end tour.Anyone else think we need a Joe Harvey statue, loved Sir Bob,think Joe should have got it first, won trophy’s as skipper and Manager HTWL.

  41. TOMMY GIBB its funny but i was thinking that about Joe Harvey the other day . He is the next one that should get a statue or a stand named after him , After all he was a winner and we haven’t had many of those these last few years .
